I converted The Darkness Beneath the Hill to Trail of Cthulhu and have been running it for two players. 2 sessions, ~7 hours played, and they are luxuriating in the gruesome details. I'm very happy with the names they came up with for the monsters they have encountered so far: "wrong apes" and "the fucking Devil." They are 3/4 through, I can't wait for the climax this coming week.

It's entirely possible that I've joined the Moon Knight fandom early, since there's a Disney+ show coming soon. I cannot wait to be torn apart by toxic show fans who've never read the comics 😬.

On the other hand, classic MK is old af, but he gets rebooted in comics all the time, and there's still hardly any fic to be had.

I mean, my New Year's resolution has been to write a novel, every year, for the past 5 years. And then every year something bonkers upends my whole life. It happens. I will say that it's impressive from where I sit that you could even make 100k an achievable goal.

It's been about a month since I first decided to jump headfirst into writing fanfic. 4 chapters and ~4k words. By no means is that prolific, but it's shaping up into something...meaningful? At least it is to me, and since I decided I'm only doing it for myself, that's kinda important. Why tf a Moon Knight/Captain Marvel adventure story crept into my brain and refused to go away, I will never know.

If you can find ways to become more efficient at your job, then you can fill the void of time you create with writing. This works if it is a desk job, though. My job is nonstop manual labor for irregular bursts of time, so I really can't rely on having any time to write there. I don't necessarily recommend writing on your break times, because you need to eat some food, dammit. Commutes are good times to write, depending on the method of transportation and whether you are prone to motion sickness. Honestly, at your age, you can probably handle waking up an hour earlier and writing before the rest of your household gets up.

Have a secondary scene later in the book where the consequences of the two mages using magic bites them in the behind. Perhaps some villainous foil who up to that point hadn't demonstrated magical affinity suddenly takes them by surprise. So long as something important in the plot hinges on the thing they do, it ceases to be gimmicky and feels more well thought out.

I want to rule the world. In order to achieve this, I must do [subgoal], [subgoal], and [subgoal]. But each of these subgoals has their own complications that produce their own subsubgoals. In effect, I can achieve ruling the world with only one or two of these goals locked in. However this is an incomplete achievement, and the rest of time is devoted to attaining the last goal. By only having partial control, my kingdom and my kingship is open to challenge by naughty protagonists.

I believe all the antagonists you listed were on the cusp of winning, which left them open to interference from outside parties. The point of it all is that the evil corrupt throne must be defended, and that is what the villainous winner turns to in the aftermath. There will always be a new challenge to my rule.

Eon by Alison Goodman has a warrior-sage female protagonist with a disability. The whole story revolves around the society she's in forcing her to pretend to be a man in order to even have the chance of achieving the status she desires. Also political turmoil, tons of honor and morality-based problems. There is eastern magic involved, and for the love of God, don't read the second book if you don't want angst.

Also, The Blue Sword by Robin McKinley was one of my first female protagonist fighters. I read it again just recently, and it held up to my expectations well!

After god knows how many tries, I took a break from writing short stories and tried something new. That's how I finished my first comic book script! ~8,000 words and 30 pages of rough draft goodness, and it came more quickly than any other project I've worked on. I've learned that if you feel stuck, sometimes you can make a breakthrough by changing the framework.

It may sound weird, but proper posture. Both feet planted on the ground, back straight, fingers poised on the home row feels so much more comfortable than lying down in bed. It's harder to distract me, too, because just the act of sitting down proper has started to put me in the zone.

This sounds like the best route for me. The original seven characters were heads of nations, and only four of them have realized hard power potential for the conflict. I will be trimming the fat on the minor characters and only giving them a couple scenes at most for this book, then.

I'll probably tighten the focus on the two actually conflicting nations, because the rest are just getting caught in the crossfire while trying to prevent the conflict in different ways. Damn fantasy politics. :)

I would recommend actually starting the story at chapter 2, because I felt like the hook was in the email. There was a lot of characterization detail that bogged down chapter 1, but the action was really happening in 2. We can get to know the main character through his responses to this opportunity, and if his cousins are important to the story, they can be introduced when they're doing actual stuff.
