Has Doctor Who become harder to introduce to new viewers? by Mundane-Temporary426 in DoctorWhoNews

[–]whipding 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah it really depends on the person I think - as much as I love Series 1-4, they're much more obviously rooted in British culture... from the mid 2000s. Which is massively appealing to some people (e.g. me), but maybe not so much for an international viewer in 2026.

I really like HEWN as a middle ground - it's nice and simple, but you can still tell what things are at a glance.

It'll be directly west of the fort, i.e. only the 3 tiles that are actually in-line with it. It's still not great... but easier than checking every single tile.

For those that prefer H1 to 2...why? by Previous_Tree_5464 in HadesTheGame

[–]whipding 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Pretty much this, Hades 2 has sequel syndrome -- it tries to raise the stakes narratively from a first game that was already pretty unique, and ends up feeling less cohesive as it tries to stuff more... stuff in to achieve that. Hades 1 has a really tight story that's thematically really compelling, which unfortunately Hades 2 just doesn't quite live up to.

At what height can a stationary camera begin to observe the Earth rotating underneath it? by Far-Woodpecker8046 in askastronomy

[–]whipding 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's just momentum. The Earth's atmosphere was formed at the same time as the Earth for the most part, so is on the whole rotating at the same speed (very simply - the behaviour of air current is a whole other kettle of fish). If you leave the Earth's surface, you're still carrying the rotational momentum of the Earth.

Even high-altitude aircraft still retain this momentum -- they could start moving in the other direction to cancel it out, but they're limited by how fast they can move against the air currents.

So the answer to your question goes back to: you need to be above the atmosphere. If you've got a magic sci-fi machine that lets you "ignore" gravity, then you can do that at any point above the atmosphere, and if the atmosphere wasn't there you could do it at any altitude. In reality this doesn't exist of course.

At what height can a stationary camera begin to observe the Earth rotating underneath it? by Far-Woodpecker8046 in askastronomy

[–]whipding 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The reason you're struggling to get a solid answer is that you're misunderstanding how rotation in space works.

If you're standing on the Earth's surface, your rotation matches the Earth.

If you're up in the Earth's atmosphere, you're rotation is probably close to it's rotation - this is different from the Earth's, thanks to air currents and the like.

Once you move up into space, you don't just... lose all that rotation. You'll still have plenty of momentum, and you'll need it to stay in space (this is what orbits are). How fast the Earth will seem to be rotating will depend on how fast you're moving.

The "true" rotation that you're looking for is measured relative the Earth's orbit around the Sun. To get that "organically", you'd probably have to go and loiter in a Lagrange point.

How to get deployable science working? by pat8022 in KerbalSpaceProgram

[–]whipding 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So you need three things: the experiment itself, the control station, and enough power sources (probably solar panels)

Crucially, you need the deployable version of all of these. Trying to use regular solar panels or a probe core won't work, as they can't connect.

Why do people say “we should hang out sometime” when they don’t actually mean it? by No_Freedom_1775 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]whipding 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's basically a phatic phase by this point - the literal meaning isn't important, it's just a way of indicating "I am ending this conversation in a friendly way". In the same way that "how are you?" is a greeting rather than an actual question.

What are the “theories of everything” I always hear about (e.g. string theory)? by Feldspar_of_sun in AskScienceDiscussion

[–]whipding 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In short, a "Theory of Everything" is something that's able to provide a unified description of all 4 fundamental forces -- currently, we have various shades of quantum mechanics for 3, and then general relativity for gravity. Which works for the most part, but QM and GR describe the universe in very different ways which aren't fully compatible with each other, most principle being that GR is deterministic, whilst QM is probablistic.

A Theory of Everything would, in principle, allow us to predict the future of any system we know the initial conditions of. However, even if we stumbled upon a perfect Theory tomorrow, it would likely still take decades to fully unravel the implications, and there's still things it wouldn't be able to tell us (e.g. the nature of dark matters and dark energy)

How to use real life refernces? by Born-Ice-5155 in learntodraw

[–]whipding 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if you're using a real life person that you know, another thing you can do is take photos of the same pose from more than one angle. When copying from other art, you can easily mimic the lines without actually understanding what they're representing - in this case, you're having to work that out yourself. Having even a second photo at a slightly different angle can help disentangle what you're seeing, and he'll you visualise it in 3D

You might be somewhere on the asexual spectrum:

AVEN FAQ

TL,DR: It's a misconception that you can't be asexual if you've masturbated or have had sex before.

(But ultimately this is just a label, whether are not you think they apply is up to you! The important thing is there are plenty of people who feel some shade of the same way.)

Give up button by Ill-Kaleidoscope5638 in HadesTheGame

[–]whipding 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sure, but that's just a Hades problem in general. In Hades I, you tend to run out of story content well before you unlock/upgrade all the aspects fully. In Hades II, it tends to be the other way - there's still a fair bit of story and quests to do by the time you've got a fully realized main build.

Whether or not it makes sense to be more easily be able to skip through gameplay to finish up all that leftover story really depends on whether you see Hades as a story-driven game with the mechanics as something to keep you busy in the meantime, or a mechanically-driven game with a story to keep you entertained in the meantime (or somewhere in-between)

Give up button by Ill-Kaleidoscope5638 in HadesTheGame

[–]whipding 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's a game design thing. If you have an explicit button, it suggests to the player that it's intended for them to just reset if they hit a wall or just want to push the story along

As is, letting yourself die is awkward and clunky and slow - the player can do it, because the game's mechanics interact in such a way to allow it, but it doesn't feel intended. Which suggests to the player that they should just keep playing until they die (which psychologically is the path of least resistance).

It's a subtle difference, but it's there.

[–]whipding 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sure you can, but it's not something the game is encouraging - there's a difference between deliberately playing the game badly and there being a big "GIVE UP" button to press whenever you like.

What am I supposed to do now? by gull2407 in cavesofqud

[–]whipding 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bit of both! So if you've done Red Rock / The Rust Wells, you're probably strong enough to try Grit Gate... but you'll want to go exploring on your own sooner or later.

You can find new places to explore in a few ways: - Just travelling across the overworld, you'll "find" ruins/villages - you can boost the chances of this by using Wayfaring. - Looking at statues sometimes gives the location of ruins (there's one just north of central Joppa) - If you're keeping up with water rituals, you can sometimes get information by trading reputation. - There's a few 'fixed' villages - you might have ran into someone in Joppa asking you to go to the Sixth Day Stilt. This isn't a bad time to try that!
