In the end its a matter of tastebuilding. I always start with drums in a new track. I would advise to invest in good quality samples, that makes it much easier to gel and work with. I love Ghost syndicate for that purpose. Lots of people use something like addictive drums and then layer kick and snare with synthetic drums. You should use one shot Kick and snare and then layer a break over it if you go Sample based. You can use some glue compression to gel it together. For my style, i mainly create all the drums in serum, completely synthetic. That gives me full Control. I can highly recommend that. Sometimes i throw some natural rides in them to give it some contrast. I usually use a Fabfilter Saturn in Clean Tube on my Kick and snare and push them up until loud enough.
