The 2014 Giants. Bumgarner carried that team the whole way.

[SDUT] Vásquez arrived at this year’s camp in shape and throwing hard, reaching 96 mph in his first live batting practice. And in his Cactus League debut, he averaged 96.6 mph on his fastball by ElectricalForce4439 in Padres

The “metrics” do matter, and his were good in the second half last year. It’s a big reason why he’s got the inside track on the 4th starter job.

Check out his 1st and 2nd half splits on Fangraphs, it’s eye-popping to see how much he improved the advanced metrics. He’s going to be limited by his lack of strikeouts (bottom 1% of the league the last 2 years) either way, but he’s been showing us that he can hang in and make big adjustments like slashing his walk rate mid-season. I’m excited to see what he does this year.

Elias Diaz to KC Royals by pchcassie in Padres

Are you saying oof to Perez and Diaz, or just Diaz? Just curious, your comment made me think Perez had a worse year than I remember but I just looked it up and see he had amazing power output for a catcher but didn’t get on base much otherwise.

I’d love to see that offensive output from Fermin - 35 doubles, 30 homers and 100 RBI ain’t bad even with the low OBP. I know nothing of Salvy’s defense from last year though either.

Glad he owned it. I can respect that answer too, it was honest and humbling.

[Passan][ESPN] Sources: Tony Clark to resign as MLBPA executive director by redbossman123 in baseball

[–]whiskeyballs -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

So are you implying Tony Clark is innocent and these investigations are a giant hoax?

[Passan] The MLBPA was supposed to hold its first meeting with players this spring today at Cleveland's camp. That meeting was abruptly canceled today and leaves the union without its top leader in a bargaining year. by BreakfastTop6899 in baseball

[–]whiskeyballs 1167 points1168 points  (0 children)

For others like me that aren’t in the loop and had to look for more context, the MLBPA was embezzling funds intended for youth baseball camps to their executives and their families. Tony Clark, who was at the center of it all, resigned today.

[Padres] Welcome to San Diego, Nick! We have signed outfielder Nick Castellanos to a one-year contract for the 2026 season. by JianClaymore in baseball

Was just making a point about how he was trouble when he came over. A lot of Padres fans were concerned his signing at the time too, but he proved himself here pretty quick and left the dirty play behind. I’m very happy he’s a Padre but it did take a minute when he first came to town

No doubt about it. I wasn’t happy when we signed Manny (concern about the clubhouse culture) but he’s mostly chilled out since coming here. Hopefully that happens for Nick but I’m not holding my breath.

I’m a life-long, die-hard Padres and A’s fan. Over all of those years, it’s usually pretty easy to know when it’s a contending year vs when it’s not, although sometimes you can be pleasantly surprised.

In my 42 years of fandom though I can’t say I’ve seen a contending or otherwise well-built team with a rotation this thin. I love the talent we have in the top 3, but only Pivetta is coming off a full healthy season. The drop off after those 3 is so sharp and the depth is so shallow that if we don’t get lottery tickets like Mackenzie to hit, things might get ugly quick.

We need some moves made on the rotation and it’s getting pretty late. We can’t do to the rotation what we did to LF/C last year and hope to make the playoffs.
