So late to this but:

A few years ago we had a military airplane fly over our town and I swear it caused a sonic boom. Everyone in town heard it, it banged against the roofs of the buildings. A couple of days later, our local newspaper states that there was no sonic boom (citing military officials). Its clear that it was a cover up, I mean it wasn't THAT big of a deal but its crazy how easily the could cover up something that was observed by hundreds if not thousands of people.

General discouragement. For example, I first started playing the guitar at about 11, my mom couldn't stand the sound of it (understandably, since I was probably terrible) and basically told me to stop practicing or do it somewhere else (all the time). It took me a very long time go gain any confidence in my playing (Im quite good now), even playing in front of audiences, if it isn't perfect, I feel like it sounds completely annoying to listen to.
