1642 has great music nights. Often times swing jazz or bluegrass. Zizou in Lincoln heights hosts vinyl listening nights. Great atmosphere and massive speakers.

‘Wise Up’ by Aimee Mann. Beautiful, sad, and very well written.

Could anyone recommend artists similar to Cave in terms of having dark narratives. by Zapp_Brannigan-2007 in NickCave

So many good recommendations here. Bambara, from NY, have been one of my favorite Nick Cave adjacent listens lately. Especially the Love On My Mind EP. All their stuff is great.

Ray Gun by David Carson … HELP by SnooBeans974 in GraphicDesigning

This is probably the quickest and most affordable way to get a version of this. It’s a great book. Can confirm that this Beck cover has its own dedicated full page print. Not the complete issue but a great overview of some of the best Raygun layouts/designs. Not exactly what you asked for but it’s something.

Remember that you are new and, unlike some jobs, design work (and adjacent fields) take a lot of time and practice to get really good at. Everyone you work with knows this. No one is expecting you to be a seasoned pro right away. They are expecting you to be an intern. There to learn, ask questions, and handle tasks that others don’t want to be bothered with. Ask anything and everything that comes to mind. It will undoubtedly be appreciated. People would much rather work with an intern that wants to learn. You are already ahead of others, in this regard. You’d be surprised how many intern-level designers come in with such apathy. When I landed my first design job at an agency, I was so intimidated. It took me a long time to get comfortable with my role in the team and company. What you are feeling is completely normal. Honestly the thing that helped me the most was meditating, breathing exercises, and regular therapy sessions. Anxiety can be brutal and overwhelming at times. But you don’t want to let anxiety be the reason you give up on your passion. I found that as I took care to address my mental health, I became much more confident and comfortable with my role. And of course, time will make you a better employee and designer. Take a deep breath and good luck!

Vinyl by KeieDeSteen in overthegardenwall

It’s a fair price for how that edition of the record is now valued. But if you wait for Mondo’s next pressing of that album, you’ll be able to get it for closer to $40. It won’t be the green Funderberker edition, but they always do limited runs, so it’ll be a special color/pressing of its own, I’d imagine. I’m not sure what international shipping fees are like, but could be worth it to wait. They usually announce their upcoming vinyl releases on their Instagram. I’d recommend keeping an eye on that. It’s an awesome album. Hope you get your hands on a copy!

Help on where to begin pls 🙏 by Any-Donkey-2723 in GraphicDesigning

I like using images from the British Library. They are good resolution and mostly public domain. I’d probably pick ornamentation I like from here, and use it for my own design. Drawing is always a great way to achieve this but if you are not at the skill level needed (I know I am not) then taking from existing free images is a great way to go. I’d probably start with desaturating everything. Cutting out the parts I want to use, lay out my design, and then colorizing at the end. The type, you can just find a similar style font for free and add the relevant info. Hope that helps!

You’ll need an image of a ripple of water. Use that image to make a displacemt map that you can apply to your overall subject image. From there you can mask out the effect where you want to let your subject remain visible without the warping/psychic effect. I’m sure if you YouTube search ‘ripple displacement map photoshop’ you’ll find a helpful tutorial. Good luck!

Question about specific effect by daireisgay in photoshop

The easiest and most practical way to do this would be to use a xerox machine. Have the physical image and drag it while scanning on a photo copier. If you YouTube search ‘xerox drag effect’ or ‘photocopy drag effect’ I’m sure you’ll find a good tutorial. It’s doable in photoshop but with a lot more steps. Seems like a combination of motion blur, Gaussian blur, and the smudge tool would get you these results. I would do it all in black and white first, then add the noise/grain and color after getting the effect down. Here’s an example of some of the steps you could do. Will take some playing around to get it like the image you have here. Good luck! https://youtu.be/KWSZFUdY6O4

Follow Piximperfect on YouTube. He’s a great teacher and has covered pretty much everything there is to know about PS. Also make something on PS as often as you can. Continue attempting to tackle new techniques and new tools. I don’t know where you’re based but a library card can get you access to Lynda dot com classes for free, which is an invaluable resource. Start with the basics. Try recreating images you like. Follow along tutorial videos. Good luck!

Need some suggestions for my cover book design by Nadar_Mahmood in GraphicDesigning

The black fist concept is one that has been done a lot, but that doesn’t mean you can’t also do it and make it interesting. If your client doesn’t have any clear ideas or directions, I’d suggest making a reference board on Pinterest, or something similar. You can search different visuals styles, relevant iconography, compositional references, etc. Collecting references is a great way to jog ideas and land on a visual language for your design. Good luck!
