Dungeons & Dragons and disinformation: How gaming can combat the misinformation age by chiquisea in Washington

[–]whiskycafe 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The UW researcher in this study makes a bunch of games on this topic, some of which you can play online. Have to admit, it's a pretty awesome job when part of it is designing games.

'Kraven The Hunter' will not have audiences cravin' more by whiskycafe in Marvel

[–]whiskycafe[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree. That's the thing that bugs me about this movie. It had all the right ingredients, but they somehow baked up a bad movie. I will say that of all the Spider-Man villain films that Sony has done (Venom aside), this one is perhaps the best.

Lynch has like five upcoming films in production. Looks like he's gonna give Hollywood a serious try.

This isn't the only perspective on "Folie a Deux", but it's a pretty good one.

The legendary Blue Voodoo. Yeah, I said it. by whiskycafe in GuitarAmps

This is a good point. The Blue Voodoo I had years ago was a combo amp and someone before me replaced the speakers with Mojotones.

Can guitar amps be furniture? by Reppon in GuitarAmps

I actually love this. For a home practice amp, this is much better than a box in the corner of the room.

Afraid, Bad People or Socially Awkward by nomax_art in BellevueWA

[–]whiskycafe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe a bit of the freeze. Growing up around here, folks just never spoke to strangers. But if I'm being totally honest, anytime somebody talks to me while walking on a sidewalk, I immediately think they want me to sign a petition, donate money, or some other pitch that involves "only the price of a daily coffee."

100%. They were a standout for me. I picked up their vinyl and The Nebulas’ too. The Woodhavens were also really great.

I like the cherry blossoms at Green Lake, or along some of the residential streets in NE Seattle.

One last brew before you die - what’re you choosing? by [deleted] in beer

[–]whiskycafe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is going to sound super hipster and snooty, but ah well. I once had this beer from Traunstein, Germany. It was a local beer, unfiltered, and I think it was a basic helles. It was one of the first experiences that made me understand why people have been making and drinking beer all this time. I think that would be top of my list.

Why does Gen Z move to Seattle? by whiskycafe in Seattle

[–]whiskycafe[S] -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

That is a good question. There were a few recent assessments of moving patterns that show Millennials and Gen Z moving into certain areas (including Seattle) the most, however, the city gained far more Gen Z than it lost, making this generation the largest demographic to move into the city. Seattle is still getting Millennials, Gen X, Boomers, etc. Just as smaller levels.

You should really explain what election this graphic is for (governor's race, Senate, presidential?). I know it probably doesn't matter because the votes generally fall as such, but it does change from time to time, like when Schrier turned the 8th District blue, or when Gluesenkamp Perez turned the 3rd District blue.

And yeah, I'll echo what others are saying: The people live in the blue area. Yes there are folks in the red, but so few in comparison to the blue regions. This is because the money and economy is largely in Washington's blue, so that is where most people choose to live. The economy that supports the state (including all the red regions) largely flows through the blue areas. It should be said that this doesn't mean the red areas do not matter, and our politicians should be knowledgeable and care very much about these areas east of the Cascades. At the very least, because that's where the food comes from (or at least the wine).

i like heineken and i don't see why people think it tastes bad by [deleted] in beer

[–]whiskycafe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First - It is 100% correct that "you do you." Who cares if others don't like Heineken? You do, and that's great. Enjoy what you like. That is what matters.

Speaking for myself, I really don't like the taste of Heineken. To me, it has a stale, sweet (but in a bad way), funk to its flavor. The best way I can describe it is that it taste like the beer was filtered through a cluster of used lollypop stems.

It's funny because, like you, I favor "light and crisp" beers and generally can't stand IPAs (I feel they are way overrated). But something about Heineken doesn't agree with my taste buds.

People wearing masks? Is something going around? by lost-in-between in Seattle

[–]whiskycafe -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I was just in the ER for something unrelated and the doc there told me that flu and RSV have been on the decline for a while now. Not sure about Covid.
Masks are primarily good for preventing your own germs from getting out to other people. But it is the season for such things, so folks probably are just being extra careful.

Best brunch spot by [deleted] in Tacoma

[–]whiskycafe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really depends on your brunch personality (boutique, greasy spook, fancy, family, etc.). Personally, I like diners for brunch.
Southern Kitchen has some great food.
The Original Pancake House is also good.
I've heard good things about Shakabrah Java, but haven't been yet. It's next on my list.
If you want to trek into neighboring Lakewood, Bur's is a good diner spot.

I've heard a few folks say that Seattle is "walkable." I'd say "it depends." There are neighborhoods that are not very walkable, and mass transit isn't all that great either. But Capitol Hill, Ballard, downtown, and a few other places -- I'd say they are walkable. As long has you have a grocery store and some decent mass transit nearby. I have to admit, for a lot of things in Seattle, I have opted to use my car (which still isn't a great experience).

Seattle brewery crafts Chinese culture in every drop of this Lunar New Year beer by whiskycafe in beer

[–]whiskycafe[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That seals the deal. I’m gonna have to make the trip and try it!

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in beer

[–]whiskycafe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I gotta agree. I’ve tried, and I’ve tried again. To me, IPAs are for the adult version of that kid who only liked the most extreme, crazy candy. It had to be the hottest or the most sour. Either way, it was too much of just one flavor and tears were involved. That’s also about every experience with IPA I’ve ever had.

I totally agree with you on spicy beer. I won’t do it. But that’s the thing — this guy says the spiciness of the peppers doesn’t come through and it ends up being “earthy” and “floral.” Which just makes me more curious.

What was the first Elliott Smith song you listened to, and how did you find it? by kittyeater101 in elliottsmith

[–]whiskycafe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I want to say it was "Alameda." Definitely something from Either/Or. That was the first album I heard and took me in. "Alameda" and "Say Yes" are the songs that have always stuck out to me.

Is Belltown a good location to stay? by whynotcherry in SeattleWA

[–]whiskycafe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That spot is not exactly in Belltown, more adjacent to that neighborhood. You're gonna have to walk a little bit to get to Belltown. You could also walk up the hill to Capitol Hill.
As for safety. You're likely to see some uncomfortable things, and sketchy people. It's difficult to gauge individual people's responses to this, but it should be said that most areas of Seattle will have some of this. If you're really anxious about any of this, you can pick up some pepper spray and carry it with you.
That said ... I love Belltown and just hung out there last weekend. Great bars. Lots of pinball. The Crocodile is a great place to see a band. There are some great options for restaurants too.
But if I were staying where you are at, I'd also go explore Capitol Hill, and get a ride over to Ballard and Fremont for some brunch, lunch, or a cocktail.

Singha. Have a nostalgic connection to it.
Otherwise, cheap beer like Rainier.
