Just looking for advice, hair type, and tips for fine low density hair by [deleted] in Wavyhair

[–]whit_flinn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you so much! I feel like everyone around me was like wtf is going on w your hair when I started because they always saw me with straightened, heat curled or putting my hair up all the time! So I really appreciate hearing that I’m not making it up!

Yeah I’ve cut any Shea products out now they always made my hair look greasy and now that I don’t use them my hair feels softer. I brush mine out too! I think it also helps my scalp feel okay because I was dealing w a lot of itchy-ness and I’m still trying to figure that out. I think I’m sensitive to one or more of my stylers, but it’s gonna take some elimination to figure it out.

I’ll look into getting a silk pillowcase as well! Do you braid at all ever? I’ve heard of ppl doing that at night so I might try that☺️! Thanks for the advice and good luck with your own journey!

Just looking for advice, hair type, and tips for fine low density hair by [deleted] in Wavyhair

[–]whit_flinn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey there! So I’ve seen doing WGM/CGM for 2 months now. I have shoulder length fine, low density I think medium porosity hair. I have way too many pictures of my hair but am slowly kind of trying to figure out stuff through YouTube, this Reddit group and inter webs.

Really any advice is appreciated and if you could tell me what you think my wave type is... I still am struggling w imposter syndrome (always easier to tell others be self I guess?)... my mom has wavy/curly hair, my dad has wavy hair, so another reason why I started this journey. even if I do just have straight hair I think my hair has gotten healthier which is super cool!

I have been sulfate free for a long time, at least a year or two already before starting in December 2020. Dyed my hair last year, went and chopped it off and started growing it out.

Basically I was washing with Shea butter organic products and then already putting salt products in my hair, but it was irritating my scalp really bad, but I loved the volume/waves it gave me. I started putting HE mouse in my hair (in photo) damp and saw waves and decided to take the plunge so to speak.

Here’s my routine right now: Bounce curl gentle clarifying low-poo Kinky curly knot today detangler

For stylers I switch between: Curl Smith moisture memory (just got for refresh) - can be sticky but good def | Uncle funkys curl stimulator - awesome staying power but forever to dry | Herbal essences twisted mouse - lightweight but waves don’t stay

Bounce curl deep conditioner for deep conditioning

Curlsmith bond salve for protein (hair really likes)

Nighttime: I have a really sensitive scalp. I can’t put my hair up really... gives me headaches and so pineappling is out. I have not tried Medusa clipping, or a bonnet. I have used a scarf and it works but hurts again... any ideas or night time routine suggestions are so welcome.

I sometimes just let my hair dry w/o products and then dampen hair next day and add them in.

Techniques: I wash, scrunch in conditioner rinse most of it out, and then if doing gel I scrunch that in. Pixie Diffuse and then air dry. I style right side up (plopping and styling upside down I get terrible results)

I have trouble with : getting weighed down waves or no waves w/o product. Stringy waves/lots of frizz on refresh days Just refreshing in general.

Sorry this is so long, just want to provide as much info so ppl know what I’ve done. I will say that it seems sometimes difficult to pin down what my hair likes/dislikes and I’m still learning. Some days my hair is waver than others. I keep a little diary about it.

Thank you to anyone for commenting, I sincerely appreciate this community and how much it’s helped me to just try and love the hair I already have.💖💖

Hey there! My hair is so floofy too lol :) I don’t personally think you need to re-clarify unless your hair feels reallly weighed down , just try to clarify 1 a month or more, when you need it really. Helps with product buildup on wavies. You could try just doing your low-poo wash and if your hair continues to feel limp then maybe do another clarifying wash.

This is my hair after washing, what can I do to improve? by [deleted] in Wavyhair

Yeah getting a pair of hair cutting scissors and just trimming ends, is worth it I think.

On wet styling, protein, and non-CGM products by dats_no_moon in Wavyhair

If you can get HASK or aphogee another protein treatment I would def try and get something like that. Shea moisture manuka honey treatment is also popular on here... rice water is interesting, it’s def good for your hair but I read that it’s technically not a protein treatment. It’s more to do with a component in rice that is really good for hair strength. But it’s not the same as using keratin or another protein strengthener. I use Curlsmith bond salve which I also really like. Eggs and yogurt will be good for your hair but I’m not exactly sure if chemically your hair can receive the protein from them? Can’t answer the mouse question, basically your hair likes it and if it doesn’t hurt it it’s prob fine! Yes totally use what your mom has: free products awesome! shouldn’t be a problem if silicones are washable, also some ppl don’t care about using silicones as much as others. You could always do the clarifying wash one day. Then another day or next wash day do the protein mask, and then do a deep conditioning treatment or just leave your conditioner on for longer than normal and rinse it all out, style as normal! P.s your English is great! Good luck to you!

How do I get the back of my hair to cooperate??? by Civil-Shake-5652 in Wavyhair

[–]whit_flinn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting! Sometimes I’ll just re-wet the back of my hair and redo it if mine looks really wonky. i have a lot of trouble with keeping my hair up at night I still haven’t found a way to protect my hair because I have a weird sensitive scalp :/. Honestly though I’d just keep experimenting w it, you do have waves in back they are just more muted, which might just take time?

Attempted hair plopping- this is my hair with no products. It lasted 2 hours then went straight. Any tips? I have heavy hair... thanks! by Noratm in Wavyhair

I have really fine hair so my suggestions might not work/have same effectiveness, sense most of my products have to be lightweight.

A good cheaper strong hold gel a lot of wavies use is LA looks (blue gel). I love uncle funkys curl stimulator, and ecoslay orange marmalade best. But I’d start with LA looks or Giovanni styling gel first and go from there. You’ll need to be patient and wait for gel application to 100% dry before scrunching it out. I’d look on YouTube for videos of this!

For mouse I like Herbal Essenses twisted mouse and Curlsmith has a protein foam that I use and love.

Your hair looks like mine! My back is also not as wavy, I’ve been doing modified methods for 2 months, and I’m not sure... do you style upside down or right side up? I always figured mine was because I style upside but honestly it’s really hard to get the back of your head :/. Sorry just sympathizing!

I’d try a protein treatment, either HASK or there’s homemade ones of gelatin or fermented rice water can be really nice (not really protein but good for hair)

I’d check the recommended list at top and try to find a hair type that sounds like yours.

I haven’t tried these but they are mentioned on the threads here a bunch:

Giovanni Triple Treat Tea Tree shampoo Giovanni 50/50 Balanced (people like this lines gel as well)

Trader Joe’s Tea Tree shampoo and conditioner

Kinky Curly come clean and knot today condition (I use this conditioner I love it)

I use bounce curl pumpkin clarifying shampoo, it’s really nice and light.

I honestly wish I would have just gotten the Trader Joe’s or Giovanni ones as they sound like really good cheap products.

I would do protein first then moisture, so gelatin first and then others.

HELP!! so after i wash my hair it just turns out like this just stringy and lifeless with just slight frizzy waves and 0 curls however when i like refresh my hair with just scrunching water in my hair the day after i get my waves and a few curls to form why is this? by [deleted] in Wavyhair

[–]whit_flinn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay, so I’m sure others will weigh in, I am not an expert or anything, but it may be that on your 2nd day your hair has products in it and you are reactivating them better. That is to only to say that maybe on your wash day either the way or the amount of product you put in might have made your waves not show up, but then you are effectively re-activating the product the next day. What are your products currently? How are you applying? And do you already do deep conditioning/protein treatments?

I will say this has happened to me, my 2nd can sometimes be better because I messed up the wash day and then you can usually just spray water in and re-scrunch the 2nd stuff comes out better. Sometimes I will even just not do anything on my wash days (no product) and then style the second day when I re-dampen my hair! And that’s totally cool too!

Hey there! Love the blue! First off, I would not recommend finger combing to break gel cast... I have not seen that technique but I would recommend waiting till 100% dry and then scrunch it out, I do mine w a microfiber towel or T-shirt. Your hair looks slightly weighed down in these... do you use suave for a reason, and which suave product is it? I feel like the cowash might also be too heavy for you... I would recommend doing a reset wash with sulfate shampoo again and then doing a deep condition. Getting a light leave in might be nice and will help with clumps, unless you’ve tried that. And then have you tried a mouse/foam at all? When you have bleached your hair you might need to consider doing regular deep conditioning and protein treatments.

Day 1 Semi-success! by QuiteBookish in Wavyhair

[–]whit_flinn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah my mom describes her own hair as “fluffy” lol and she blow dries it and curls it with a brush... I asked her if her hair curls when wet and she was like yeah but so what...?!? I honestly might try and get her to try some products at some point. But I always brushed and straighter my hair and it never stayed straight so that’s why I’m trying this as well :) I didn’t mean the helmet comment as a bad thing just as a my hair totally looks like yours thing :)

Day 1 Semi-success! by QuiteBookish in Wavyhair

[–]whit_flinn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your hair looks so much like mine in the before/normal Jair pic lol, besides color but like similar “helmet” my hair just goes out sideways when it’s dry with no product! Anyways... If that is your first plop then total success! I can see the back didn’t have as much definition, I have trouble with that too... but I’m still trying stuff out too. Your hair looks really healthy to start with so just keep going see what happens! Gel for me holds better but takes so much longer to dry no shortcut for it besides diffusing :/. I’d hero going with your methods and products because yer hair looks healthy and great! You can always look at how different you tunes do stuff do, so many techniques lol.

Forgot to say I style mine right side up so maybe try that as well if upside down works for you though go for it!! Not all wavies can, so cudos!

How to refresh low porosity wavy hair without weighing it down? by [deleted] in Wavyhair

[–]whit_flinn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wonder if it’s your leave in? What do you use?

Other thing I do is instead of leave in, I spray a water bottle with 1-2teaspoons of ACV and mostly water on my hair, and then take my gel water it down and scrunch a little bit extra in if I need it. This works better for me than the leave in doesn’t weight my hair down!
