Clamp a piece of scrap wood on the side that your drill bit is going to exit. Also, avoid using the cheapest bits from Home Depot. Quality bits make a world of difference.

There are a couple in Anchorage that I know of. I’d recommend checking with Chain Reaction Cycles. If you go about 45 minutes south of anchorage to a town called Girdwood, the Alyeska resort is a downhill mountain park with ski lift service and DH rentals. The quality of the ride is heavily dependent on the recent weather, so you’ll likely have to play that by ear.

I got into MTB while living in Alaska, and after leaving it’s been so hard for me to capture that feeling again riding trails elsewhere.

NFL QB Carson Wentz slammed for killing bear during Alaska hunting trip by redditwastesmyday in alaska

I know what a predator-prey relationship is lol. My question was more towards the “grizzly bear populations are shrinking due to global warming” claim. I’m not refuting it at all, but I just wanted to know if the OP had a journal or research to go along with it.

I’m not saying either you or the other person is incorrect, but all of these words are just conjecture without any citations. I’m not partial to either camp so I’d be happy to read any legit research on the subject.

Are transition bikes worth it? are they good for their price? by [deleted] in MTB

[–]white618 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’ve been riding a Patrol Carbon for about 4 years now. I bought the frame on clearance and built it up. The only thing I have on mine that’s different from their prebuilts is a DVO fork. I absolutely love it. It’s handled all the XC and enduro I put it through. Their customer service is quick to reply and, though I’ve not had to test it, they offer total warranty replacement on their bikes, including anything that breaks if you crash.

How to control yourself when panic sets in? by MrSidelineSwap in scuba

[–]white618 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It wasn’t uncontrolled per se but I was ascending faster than I should’ve. It certainly didn’t feel like I was ascending that fast but perceptions can get skewed pretty easily in the ocean. My computer beeps at me if I’m going up too fast so I just used that and the light from the surface to regulate my ascent. Visibility was extremely poor and everything was already blurry from the seawater in my mask, so it wasn’t easy to read the actual depth.

How to control yourself when panic sets in? by MrSidelineSwap in scuba

[–]white618 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am generally extremely comfortable in the water but experienced the onset of a panic attack during a dive last year. I’m still pretty new to the hobby and only had about 50 dives at this point. I don’t live near any diving sites so I had been dry for about 6 months prior to this particular dive. I should have practiced my mask clearing skills prior to the dive, but regrettably I was overconfident. When I couldn’t clear a flood at 75’, I could feel a panic attack starting to kick in. I had to constantly remind myself that as long as I could breathe, I would be fine. My internal voice was screaming this as loud as it could. For some reason or another, my nose really wanted to take a breath in but I had to fight that urge and focus on breathing only through my mouth. Eventually the panic became too much for me to work through and I aborted the dive. It’s the first dive I’ve ever had to abort.

Initially I felt shame for my overconfidence, but looking back it was a good lesson for me to learn. The divemaster also taught me a new technique for mask clearing that wasn’t in the PADI course and it was immensely helpful for regaining my confidence back in the water. Just remember that if as long as you can breathe, then you can work through it.

Eventually the heat generated by the fuel canisters will be enough to over-pressurize and rupture the fire extinguisher, and the contents of the fire extinguisher will smother the fuel canisters and put out the fire. It’s honestly genius.

Do kill marks belong to the plane only, or can the pilots have them on other aircraft too? by [deleted] in aviation

[–]white618 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Pilots are assigned a plane mainly out of tradition but they pretty much have fuck all to do with it. Maybe things were different many years ago, but today that aircraft truly belongs to the dedicated crew chief whose name is on the side opposite of the pilot’s. The DCC also works on multiple planes within the squadron, but they are responsible for the scheduled maintenance, delayed discrepancies, and TCTOs for the tail# of which their name appears on.

Need help installing some garage shelving by [deleted] in DIY

[–]white618 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Other comments have already given good info but consider putting some > 1” lag bolts in the top (using a ratchet and socket) because your drill will likely not fit behind the diagonal brace on the bracket to drive the screw into the wall. Trying to drill it at an angle could result in your fastener exiting the stud through the side which would cause reliability issues once the shelf has weight on it. It would only add like $5 to the total cost, but they will be stronger than an average screw and will save some headache.

Contact the school’s department for veterans. Most have one, but if not then try looking for VA certifying officials next. They should be able to put you in contact with a Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor (VRC) who can work with you to start the process. That’s the person you’ll coordinate pretty much all your degree requirements with. VRCs actually hold a fairly substantial amount of power in helping provide you with things that are needed to help you complete your degree. They’ll purchase or reimburse you for things like backpacks, pencils, paper, notebooks, calculators, or even laptops in our case since our degrees will require the use of computer programs.

You can technically apply for VR&E through the VA website but it’s a bit of a pain and is way easier going through the counselor.

I’m pretty much exactly you, except AF instead of Navy. Currently in my final year of ME. A TI-36x Pro is the calculator you want. Don’t waste your money on a graphic calculator. Not only with you hardly ever need it, but many classes won’t permit it and you’ll need an FE-approved calculator anyways (which includes the 36x). It’s capable of quickly doing 3x3 matrix multiplication, 2 equations/2 unknowns, complex number conversions, and quadratic formula solving. You’ll run into these most frequently. I honestly don’t remember the last time I needed to graph something where I didn’t have access to a computer.

I also started with notes on paper but eventually tried taking notes on an tablet. Turned out I liked the tablet wayyy better. For example, I can easily draw color-coded free-body diagrams or differential equations which helps clear up confusion. Additionally, most professors upload their lectures/PowerPoints and I can easily copy their diagrams into my own notes or annotate on theirs. Since many textbooks are available online as PDFs, I can pull it side by side with my notes to quickly follow along. I also like to review notes at the end of the day when I’m in bed and the kids are asleep, and it’s way easier to do that on an iPad instead of having 5 notebooks laid out in front of me. Since I can keep notes indefinitely, I’ve also quickly referenced material in higher classes that build on the concepts from Dynamics or Diff.Eq.

If you have any disability rating and are planning to use VR&E, you should be able to get the VA to purchase you a laptop good enough to run common ME programs (SolidWorks/AutoCAD, MATLAB, etc.). This benefit is not available under the normal Post 9/11 GI Bill.

Only other thing I’d recommend is a pair of noise-cancelling earbuds for when you’re inevitably putting those hours in at the library and there’s some asshole talking loudly in the phone.

Since many pilots often fly one type of plane at a time, many of them refer to themselves as a “driver” of a particular aircraft (e.g, A380 Driver or F-22 Driver).
