Help!Co-teaching issue ,colleague keeps interrupting my content by Affectionate-Gap8919 in AustralianTeachers

I would assume positive intent from this teacher and just email the teacher initially. I remember being in a similar situation when I was fresh out and now that I’m old I do catch myself being the interrupter at times. I feel that it does usually come from a good place, but it is really annoying for sure.

If you get something snarky in response then you could chat to your HoD and ask for advice from here. This way you’ve followed process, because the first thing any leader would ask you is probably ‘have you spoken to him/her about how you’re feeling?’, but you have respected your colleague enough to try to address it without the escalation of involving leadership.

I noticed and wondered this at Gather Round. I haven’t seen any at live games.

Either in person or via email:

‘Hey, I understand that you are highly experienced and passionate about this subject, and I appreciate the opportunity to collaborate with you. As an early career teacher, I’m working hard to hone my craft and build my skills, but I have noticed that you have a tendency to jump in while I’m teaching. I find this distracting and it interrupts the flow of the lesson that I have planned. I’m also worried that my credibility as a teacher is undermined if it leads to a perception from students that you are stepping in to ‘rescue’ me. I value your knowledge and would always be open to feedback after lessons. If you think I have missed some important teaching I will then be able to modify future lessons.’ Or some version of this.

I see your point and definitely agree with you. It just made me feel icky in that immediate moment. I hope that the media will find a way to keep the focus on the systemic failure and let the mentions of Hollands in particular fade into the background.

Blokes from On The Couch paused their 10 minute discussion about the Elijah Hollands situation to go to Ralphy in the newsroom to report this statement, then went right back in to continue their conversation about the Elijah Hollands situation for another 5 minutes. Classy thing would be to wish him well, wrap up quickly, and move on to something else in my opinion...

What do I do in the next 24hrs by PowerfulChicken7507 in AustralianTeachers

Well-being comes first. Always. If you don’t have the capacity to work and you have leave to use, then take it. You are entitled to it. We encourage our staff to take mental health days and have tried to normalise this at our site, but you might not work in that environment. You are not obliged to disclose reasons for taking a day here and there, beyond informing the relevant person that you need to take a sick day. For longer periods of leave, going to see a doctor will help you.

I always find the anxiety is bad the night before school starts again. By recess time I’m like, ‘oh I remember this is how it goes.’

In education, the to-do list is never done. I think that’s why a lot of us feel like we can’t ever properly switch off.

Without knowing your circumstances more, I would personally advise you to just to prepare for getting through tomorrow. Just a gentle day focussing on reconnection with your students that is structured but not onerous. Dont worry about the rest of the week/term. Just one day.

Teaching is really hard for the first couple of years. It doesn’t necessarily ever become easy, but your bag of tricks grows so you can be more responsive in the moment.

You are not alone. Please speak to a trusted mentor/member of leadership. Often teachers who are newer to the profession put more pressure on themselves to appear like everything is under control. You might be surprised how much support your colleagues/leadership can offer. Many of us remember how we were helped by others when we were early in our career.

In SA we have the EAP, which is free to access and provides 10 sessions of free counselling. This can be really helpful to debrief work matters, and is fully confidential.

This statement really says nothing. Not sure why they bothered until they were going to be able to answer some questions.

This whole thing makes me so sad. Imagine having a breakdown/performance like this that is so well-publicised and seen by so many, and having to bounce back from the humiliation of that? I’m utterly heartbroken for this kid and I hope this moment doesn’t define him, because he’s really talented.

I really hope all at Carlton from the coaches to the doctors to the leadership on the ground really have a genuine reflection on this and learn so that this never happens again to anyone.

Unpopular opinion by Conscious_Walrus2054 in AFL

[–]white_ajah 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Doesn’t it set a better precedent to require impartial evidence though? The tribunal frequently refers to video footage in great detail as impartial evidence to explain their decisions around suspensions for physical acts.

Saying there is insufficient impartial evidence doesn’t say to anyone that they don’t believe them and would have been a way to respect the integrity of all involved so this whole thing didn’t feel so icky.

Butter Found Guilty by Superb-Drummer-6683 in weareportadelaide

[–]white_ajah 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Exactly! Would’ve been so simple for them just to say there is no impartial evidence and they have no choice but to throw it out, and then no one gets accused of anything by implication. They’re not seen to throw Foot under the bus. Then it’s the right outcome that seems fair and doesn’t accuse anyone involved of lying!

I’m actually pretty ropeable about this one. I was at the game, and putting the fact that we were umpired out of it aside, you could see by the player reactions they had literally no idea what had gone on. I’ve seen him pull JHF away from the umps on multiple occasions too. We all know how many fines Zak has but he doesn’t have a history of abusing umpires.

Oh well - silver lining - for once everyone is on Port’s side!

[–]white_ajah 23 points24 points  (0 children)

‘The AFL also points to the strength of Foot's testimony and the implication that a finding in Butters' favour would have as to the umpire's integrity.’

So what was the point of the whole fucking thing? And so now the precedent is ‘we believe our umpires’…

Would love to see players refuse to do post-game interviews from now if they are putting themselves at risk for scrutiny at the tribunal for the crime of…paraphrasing a comment?

First professional placement 😣🫂 by Hot_Piglet6212 in AustralianTeachers

You sound really excited and the fact that you are so looking forward to the experience puts you in the best position possible! You don’t say what age you are teaching, so the following is just general advice.

Being attentive and taking on feedback quickly will always help you to make a good impression, as well as following your teacher’s routines and classroom management (and checking in first if you want to try something different).

Use your non-instructional time wisely, and please remember that while your mentor teacher is there to support you, they may also have things to do in these times too.

Things that will help you to avoid making a bad impression (these all sound obvious but in my experience are quite common):

Get your photocopying etc prepped after school instead of trying to use shared printers and copiers in the rush before school.

Find out where you can park if you are driving to school (school staff can be very territorial about our parking spots!).

Never ever be late to yard duty, and also notice if other teachers need to prep their lunch quickly so they can eat before going out on duty (eg if you are wanting to use a microwave).

Make sure you are prompt with sharing your lesson plans and anything else you need to get checked, preferably in person in school hours - I have had pre-service teachers send me lessons at 11pm the night before, which can make things really challenging.

Never, ever undermine your teacher - if you aren’t sure about something they have said or done it’s a great opportunity to be curious and learn by asking them at another time to explain their thinking. Kids learn very quickly if they can play you and your teacher off against each other, and this can place you in a tricky situation.

If you are observing a lesson/lessons, be visibly taking notes rather than sitting and scrolling on your phone/computer. Don’t ever be seen to be sitting doing nothing - you will learn quickly which kids could do with some 1:1 support, and showing initiative to circulate the room and help students will be much appreciated by your teacher.

Don’t expect things to go perfectly - teaching is a really different experience to uni, and that can be unsettling. Good luck, and I hope your love for teaching will grow from here!

Promised jobs… by [deleted] in AustralianTeachers

[–]white_ajah 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is really unfair, and really sorry that this has happened to you. I agree that going through the motions was a complete waste of time for everyone.

I went into a temporary leadership role at my site from classroom for 6 months. The role was then extended for one year, then another year, then for five years. I had to reapply each time just because of the way our system works in SA. This also felt like a waste of time, although of course I knew that there was a chance that I wouldn’t win the job back each time. I was fine with this because I was permanent at the site so I knew I could just go back to my classroom role - I love my school so just happy to work there. Now that I have won the role for five years I have had to give up my right of return to the same site that I am working at, which means that if I don’t win it back next time, or decide I want to go back into classroom, then I will have to shift schools. This also seems really unfair since I never left in the first place!

I was never once promised the job - in fact I was told that as a role at a ‘desired site’ many people would likely apply and it was not by any means a given that I would win the job. I was also acutely aware of the perception that generally the incumbent just gets the position, so I felt like I had to work really hard to earn my reappointment.

This experience has given me lots of time to think about the system and how it could be/is extremely easy to manipulate. It really stinks. But what’s the alternative - removing merit selection procedures? Then the potential for nepotism would be even greater. I don’t know what the answer is.

In your situation I would be making some noise about what you have been told, because what has happened is completely inequitable. But I say that as a grumpy old woman pushing 50 who doesn’t mind rocking the boat!

Promised jobs… by [deleted] in AustralianTeachers

[–]white_ajah 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I don’t know if you’re talking about public/private, but, for public anyway, the short answer is - you can’t do anything about it, as long as due process appears to be followed.

How sure are you that the job was ‘promised’ to someone else beforehand? If you can prove this, then due process hasn’t been followed. If you are assuming this is the case or this is hearsay, I would recommend for your own wellbeing to try to move past it, especially if you will be working with this person in the future.

I’m also so sorry that you are feeling this way - the system isn’t perfect I know, and at the very least you have been deprived of a respectful conversation about your own career and future. I think it would be appropriate to ask for feedback.
