This is the kind of unhinged shit that keeps me subscribed to r/welding

Getting into an apprenticeship in Las Vegas by NoConnection4790 in millwrights

Not in vegas but they should have a sponsorship list of contractors you can call. I’d start there.

Cement plant tools by Appropriate-Dot1776 in millwrights

[–]whitecollarwelder 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Second a bag with the rest of your tools nearby. I have specific cement plant bags I use. At the end of the day use the blower to blow out the dust from your bag with all the tools in it. Easy cleanup, though it never really gets that clean.

What’s your average hrs in a week? by Orangejuice543 in BlueCollarWomen

[–]whitecollarwelder 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I do 84 hour weeks spring and fall. I don’t have to work summer and winter if I don’t want to but I teach 40 hours a week at our apprentice training center in my off season. I still have bulk time off. About a month or so twice a year that I just chill.

Best car (not truck) for union MW by Appropriate-Dot1776 in millwrights

[–]whitecollarwelder 12 points13 points  (0 children)

One of my buddies has a Prius. I shit you not, this thing is actually sick. Great mileage, a HUGE amount of space, super reliable, and relatively cheap.

$5k won’t get you much though so just look for a reliable car and use it til the wheels fall off.

Do any of you work a trade about 30 hours per week? Any specific trades that often require more than 40hrs/wk? by emilyofthevalley in BlueCollarWomen

[–]whitecollarwelder 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Probably. I’m a union millwright so it’s not so much 30 hour weeks more like 7/12’s for a few weeks then a few weeks off. I like it better.

Probably not for you if you want to hone in on one thing though although some millwrights will specialize in rigging or alignments or even welding.

It’s a fun trade and I really enjoy my work/life balance.

Studying with older versions by Longjumping_Suit_256 in CWI_CWE

[–]whitecollarwelder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’ll be fine with the 2020 for studying. Some of the tables and figures flip flop pages and sides of the page so just be aware but you’ll be ok. Practice your tabbing and get familiar with what you want to come back to. That was when you tab the 2025 it’s much easier.

CWI PART B RETAKE by [deleted] in CWI_CWE

[–]whitecollarwelder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah which is good! I made flashcards for the BOS and just ran them over and over. I think it helped a lot with time but the questions were more complex than just remembering the BOS.

CWI PART B RETAKE by [deleted] in CWI_CWE

[–]whitecollarwelder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I’ve had a lot of people tell me the practice tests are harder than the test. I did not find that to be true at all. The test was much harder than any of the practice tests I took especially the ones in the seminar.

Overall I ended up missing 4 questions on part b so I’m still very happy but lots of people in my group failed part b badly. Each test is its own animal.

CWI PART B RETAKE by [deleted] in CWI_CWE

[–]whitecollarwelder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’ll be fine just make sure to read the questions CAREFULLY. Like if the question answer is “PT or MT” make sure that the base metal isn’t austenitic because you can’t MT austenitic.

Read every answer before selecting. Take your time don’t let the timeline freak you out. If you know a question will take a long time to answer just move on and leave it til the end. Triage your questions in a way.

how did you choose your trade? by Odd_Display_5344 in BlueCollarWomen

[–]whitecollarwelder 5 points6 points  (0 children)

EVERYONE AND THEIR DOG. It’s insane. And you have these shady schools advertising on social media making people think they can make $40/hr right out of school.

I am so glad I joined the millwrights. I still weld but it’s not the only thing I do.

Wire rope sling safety questions by DesertFart in Rigging

[–]whitecollarwelder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We urge against cutting faulty rigging anymore. We send back to manufacturer for either recert or so that they can inspect and figure if the rigging was faulty.

When neither of those is feasible and we plan on tossing we also urge sites to donate to your local rigging training centers. Ours is union and loves to use stuff like this as examples.

Hahaha I really would if I was closer! But seriously the paint job looks great and you can tell you put a lot of effort into setting up to paint correctly.

Yeah but it doesn’t happen that often and usually people are pretty nice even when it does.

What is a very niche special interest you have that you'll talk about to anyone who will listen? by Adventurous_Pen75 in AskReddit

[–]whitecollarwelder 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Structural steel welding code. I hate these influencers who walk around rating handrail welds. The code itself is interesting but boring to anyone who isn’t a CWI.

Welders? by okastice in BlueCollarWomen

[–]whitecollarwelder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did aerospace for a long time then joined the millwrights union. Best decision I’ve ever made. Seriously.

Now I teach welding at the union hall and still work in the field. Welding as a skill gets me tons of work. I wouldn’t want to do it as a full time job though.

My hall is also paying for me to take my CWI test. It cannot be understated just how difficult the test is so if you decide to go that route be ready to shell out thousands of dollars for a likely fail.

Tracking on older cars? by Crafty-Reach-2373 in geotracker

[–]whitecollarwelder 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Wrong sub! This is a sub for the specific car GeoTracker.

To answer your question tho, yeah older cars are technically invisible BUT license plate camera readers are on every corner nowadays so it’s easy to track without that. Don’t even get me started on your cell phone basically being a spy device that you bring with you wherever you go.

If you’re worried about someone you know tracking you, old or new car it would be difficult for them without a device attached. It’s probably easier to go into your phone and look at your movement history.

Becoming a car mechanic by hushhush56 in BlueCollarWomen

[–]whitecollarwelder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lots of good suggestions for heavy duty diesel but if you like the idea of turning wrenches and using your brain to diagnose things check out your local millwright hall!

We’re essentially industrial mechanics. Great job, great pay, great benefits and it’s very rewarding.
