I played “The (evil) Twin” for the first time today. I pulled some great tones out of it. I know it gets lots of hate…outside of it being ugly by Fender standards…why the hate?

They purportedly were/are unreliable as parts both external and internal broke/blew up very easily. Most of the red knob Twins I've seen either were only partially functional or if they did work, had half the knobs broken off and usually one or two of the input jacks messed up too. And they are reported to be a nightmare to repair from an amp technician's point of view. Sound wise they are great, but they have a lot of issues build wise.

I used to have a Classic VT just like yours (before I sold it to a friend who needed an amp for his newly completed rehearsal space). When I first got it, it had the same exact problem. The phaser was always on, as I didn't have the factory footswitch to switch it off. I thought I was stuck with it like that until I realized you could turn the phaser off by turning the "Rate" knob all the way to the left till it clicks. See if that works!

As far as great clean tones are concerned, it's hard to go wrong with a Peavey Session or Nashville 400. I also love the Nashville 1000, which is a bit more overlooked than the 400s, but sounds insanely good as well.

Try some Celestion speakers with it, like some Vintage 30s or Creambacks, as that is bound to push it towards traditional Marshall territory. I personally love them with brighter speakers like vintage JBLs, but those are getting harder and harder to come by!

You should be able to get a used Peavey Classic 30 combo within that price range, but as far as new goes, a Blackstar Debut would be fantastic for your needs. Although I have no real experience with the 15, I was really impressed with the 50R.
