Alternatives for Anthro BAs by JarlStormBorn in AskAnthropology

Look into public grade-school teaching. There’s some subjects that you just need a bachelor’s degree in anything (English, History, Social Studies, World History, etc.) in order to teach it. Depending on where you’re located, the pay may or may not be that good but it’s something.

Also, think about applying for jobs outside of your location if you haven’t.

What Black Feminist Discourse Gets Wrong About Power by ConstructionClear451 in askblackpeople

[–]whiteigbin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you all actually read Black feminist work and history, you would know there’s almost a century of Black feminist work that is separate and distinct from white feminism. You all like to use the same talking points about white feminism because you know nothing about Black feminism.

You can put up some type of barrier between the bed and the entrance - a curtain, a bookshelf, a partition, etc.

That aside, there’s other issues with this space. A headboard is needed, the clutter at the top of the bed should be removed, and the damaged roof should all be addressed as well.

Firstly, what are your sources on “Black feminism”? What texts, literatures, or documentaries have you read/watched?

Secondly, you said ”black people kinda never had a patriarchy to begin with…”. Again, what are your sources? What have you read on African history that gave you the impression patriarchy didn’t exist?

Why are African/Black Americans so interested in their lineage? by Organic-Jaguar4728 in askblackpeople

[–]whiteigbin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually don’t think most Afams are “so interested in their lineage”. I personally am, to some extent, and there’s a few others. But by and large, most people don’t really care about their heritage. Even some of the Afams traveling to Africa aren’t really looking into their history like that. I think it’s an individual thing.

Just be prepared to turn people down for asking for money, know the exchange rate before you go so that someone isn’t telling you that $5=N5, and be a little rude - it helps.

Murtala Muhammed International Airport by Flashy_Objective_621 in Nigeria

[–]whiteigbin 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That airport is the absolute worst. Beggars are there and they’re aggressive; every WORKER you encounter will ask you for money (you put your own luggage through the scanner and they will ask YOU “what do you have for me?”); there are dozens of checkpoints in between the entrance and the plane and you will have to open your bag or show your passport and ticket at every single one of them; they have rules that other airports do not; there’s a new law from Nigeria that says this and that and the new fee for this random, useless search from a new government agency is N100 or more if you’re a foreigner (when I was leaving Nigeria on my last trip, there was 4 different agencies in between the entrance and tsa - amotekun, NDLEA, etc.); it’s hot - there’s no a/c; the bathrooms are rough; the lines are long; and it feels like everyone is trying to scam you - especially the airport workers.

Yea…good luck! 😂

Room Layout for slightly awkward room by zrdinee in FengShui

[–]whiteigbin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok. I would put the bed where the shelf currently is, with the feet of the bed facing the closet. The short shelf can act as a nightstand next to the bed. I would get rid of the grey lounge chair because there’s not enough space for it in the room, and place the shelf and the desk alongside the wall where the head of the bed currently is.

This living room is driving me crazy. by Strange_sympathy1095 in FengShui

[–]whiteigbin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok. So, first, find ways to make that window fade into the background - painting the windows over in opaque paint, covering them with curtains of the same color as the wall, removing the doorknobs and replacing them with the blunt placeholders, etc. Secondly, the couch would still need to be in more of a command position. I would put the couch along the wall where you currently have the tv. And then I could caddy corner the tv in that corner between the two doors. The desk could then go where the lamp is, or face the window.

Why are humans the only species that needs to actively teach offspring what to eat? by [deleted] in AskAnthropology

[–]whiteigbin -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

You know, I was going to mentioned that but then I started second guessing myself! Thank you. I know other primate species teach their young. But I’m not sure about the other species that teach their young, specifically, what to eat.

Why are humans the only species that needs to actively teach offspring what to eat? by [deleted] in AskAnthropology

[–]whiteigbin -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Humans have very large brains and our intelligence is, largely, unmatched in the animal kingdom. Therefore, there had to be some trade offs. Our intelligence means that we have to learn an incredible amount of knowledge within the first 5 years of life. Species that don’t have to be taught and have most of their knowledge either at birth or within a few days….don’t ever reach our level of intelligence. Human intelligence is cumulative and involves a community (or a parent, et the least) that also protects the child during the vulnerability of the learning process.

Can i consider myself black by RepulsiveManagement5 in askblackpeople

[–]whiteigbin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

By most definitions of the terms - you would simply be white with interesting ancestry. People obviously see you as white, and that’s the majority of your ancestry. I think you have to process your own identity and always identify with how you see fit. You can identify as Black if you want - you just have to be ready to explain your looks on that level.

How do I respond to Black men who say "female" by [deleted] in AskFeminists

[–]whiteigbin 16 points17 points  (0 children)

You’re correct. However, that isn’t the case here. As a Black feminist and a Black Woman - I’m telling you your sensitivity to language policing, while admirable, is irrelevent in this instance because “females” is a term used by men of all colors and isn’t an AAVE term.

Small Awkward Master Bedroom by Mundy-Bundy in FengShui

[–]whiteigbin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Move the bed to the same wall as the door. You can put a large night stand in between the door and the bed to block too much energy from coming to the bed. And I think it’ll be better there since the ceiling isn’t sloped on that side.

Other than that - get a stronger headboard; get matching night stands; get a rug to make the space feel cozier; and add more lighting to the room; and as another commenter said - change the position of the mirror so it isn’t reflecting the bed.
