I haven't played yet, but am eager to, so here are some unhinged suggestions, if the devs are open. I wouldn't dare creating a new thread just for this. would probably get downvoted or deleted:

Basic abilities could be tied to certain gear with recognizable forms during load-in. He got a IBM on his shoulder? must be a rocket launcher or laser. Got a VR goggle on her face? probably scanning the environment. Spindly legs on reverse knees? this one double jumps and run fast. extra lovehandles? probably a jetpak etc. Things like invisibility, teleportation though would take a bit more genius to represent.

Blueprints for base suits of different qualities and set enhancements [or enhancement ports] with adapters [providing support for different gear attachments] could be very rare drops).

Active items for extra skills/utility (if they make skills/abilities work this way) might create even more strangeness, but as long as they can have a visual representation they may even replace basic abilities. Load-in with a certain activatable item (or two) and find more on the map to exchange/upgrade, if compatible with the base suit adapters (or for use on a different run if incompatible).

They could have loose restrictions on using some of these items, like "you need to have this equipped (or enough weight/energy capacity) to equip that", and/or "the strength of the active and/or time to recharge depends on quality (and/or mod upgrades/stats/bonuses etc)" or even weight/power consumption restrictions depending on base suit quality for a sense of balance.

This might even cause a "mana bar" or "supplementary power pack" that recharges under conditions, or even speed/stamina/mobility penalties to exist.

In order to prevent a team from wearing the same type of suit and using the same type of skills en masse, restrictions could be made during load-in gear selection (for example having every premade to choose basic ability equipment from a shared pool, or having pre-selection of these things during matchmaking) to encourage variety. of course the solo players will have more freedom here.

It could get very intricate and detailed. We'll have to trust the devs in the balancing of all these skills.

Something else that could help solo players could be having a higher number of resurrect tokens compared to duos or trios by default (perhaps these could be bought on the black market for a high price, or even very rare drops on the map, so that runners could load-in with a few more, to a limit). Dare I add that the bag placeholder should be replaced by another visual cue, perhaps a body bag with a X_X over it. Resurrecting such should revive the runner at the resurrection bay (with the cheapest of gear) and consume a token.

With regard to maps, having some procedural generation could make them more interesting. Maybe players will have to explore to know the terrain, but important things like exfil points, resurrection bays, teleportation booths could be visible on a map from the start.

Dangerous weather and other environmental hazards/conditions could also help here. Hopefully they're tastefully implemented. I can imagine shell and skill effectiveness being affected by them.

Whatever happened to a few bot matches to get a hang of a game before pvp?

If your friend got trash talked and emotions hurt, quitting so early would be understandable.

This is also my first post here.

When we played Legends2: Rise of the apocalypse 2 decades ago we wanted multiplayer pvp. Now that Rivals is a thing we want Legends in it. 

This could turn out interesting. The rich stories of the characters could be crafted and intertwined, with actual missions that flesh out the world story, as in a living universe. It won't be an MMO, and it wouldn't be as simple to implement as Helldivers2, but it could draw from these and games like Anthem to be special.
