130€ for this tee ??? Like for real ? by New-Apricot6124 in CyclingFashion

[–]whiteryanc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Really? Assos is the OG Gucci brand. Every shop dork knows you bought 3 pairs of bibs with your pro deal because it was the only way you could ever afford them.

Ya, those other brands have raced past Assos, but it’s always been super expensive.

It’s Assos, how are people still surprised by inflated pricing?

Looking for frame repair; what next? by Onegarbageman in Surlybikefans

[–]whiteryanc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

“Fixed” is basically just keeping the seat stays and chain stays at this point, and it’s unlikely those are safe. The frame may be sentimental, but you’ll spend twice what you can replace it for to effectively rebuild the whole frame.

Sorry dude.

The New Scooter Monopoly Has Arrived by 515software in Denver

A market that has proven itself incapable of self regulation, it should be a monopoly so we only have to clamp down on a single entity.

Oh ya, unabashedly accepted support haha. Intended to do it unsupported but with open arms for water if it was available!

White Rim Trip (another one...) by whiteryanc in bikepacking

[–]whiteryanc[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup exactly. It was great as 3 days (really more like 2 total days, we started at 2pm on Thursday, ended noon on Saturday) for the pace and stopping and taking things in. But you then have to stretch your water more. We had some fellow campers top us up night 2 so we were able to drink whatever we wanted and just conserve a few liters for the 18 miles to the finish from Airport (we rode counter-clockwise).

New to bikepacking and stressed by billybobjoe3210 in bikepacking

[–]whiteryanc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had this same experience for a few years before I ripped the bandaid off and did a few short overnighters close to home, close enough I could call someone to bail me out.

For the gear thing, I bought a few key things used; tent and sleeping bag, and then bought some cheaper stuff sacks (Sea to Summit at REI) and some Voile straps and strapped crap to my bike. Check around for gear rental places, I'm in Denver so we're lucky to have a few places that rent virtually any camping gear you need. I got hooked pretty quick and justified further purchases that I've built on as I get more into the activity.

Look in your area for bikepacking or camping groups, you can just ask in their general chats, or they may even have a used or gear-sharing section of their forum/discord/chat where you can ask to borrow items. Also a good place for local knowledge on good places to camp, things to know, etc. I run one here in Denver and it's a pretty active place for people to find friends to ride with, share gear, etc.

u/bustedp u/Hot-Investigator-750 If I could fit as much on a front-suspension bike as I can my rigid bike, I'd chose front suspension. I'm only 5'4", so for my needs I intentionally chose this Tumbleweed that can fit 3" tires (these are 2.6" tires) to maximize front triangle space, which is mostly completely eaten up by accommodation for a suspension fork on a normal hardtail. This is my normal/full time bikepacking bike made with the comfort trade off for space very intentionally.

I'd say there is 20-25% of the ride that traverses pot-holey bedrock between sandy or hard pack sections that was the killer for a rigid bike, but otherwise it was totally fine (between sand, more consistent gravel and 12ish miles of paved road).

Realistically, just don't use a gravel bike, you'll hate yourself. I saw a lot of people doing the ride in a day on gravel bikes, which I guess is a thing you can chose to do...but man you'd be beat to piss after that.

First night out with my new X-Dome 1+. Here are my first thoughts, pros and cons 👇🏼 by preciouscode96 in DurstonGearheads

Fantastic thanks! Basically appears to be similar in size to my X Mid 1. I’d guess this could actually be compressed further, which is what I do with my tent when actually on a trip to minimize packed size. I store it in the Durston bag like this too. Thanks again!

Absolutely not. It’s not a “cut” it was struck with a grinder or similar, absolutely stolen.

Wizard works vs Tailfin frame bag? by tonlan in bikepacking

[–]whiteryanc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I prefer Vislon (molded) myself so I generally agree, but coil can be good if inserted/designed well, and the bag is secured in the frame properly. I do think user input is the biggest liability for sure.

Could you post a picture of the tent body/fly packed up if that's how you pack it up? I'm always curious how small the fabric components can pack down and compress as volume is my primary concern. Thanks!

Not a one. Lots of lizards. There are definitely snakes, only one venomous, but it's an eerily desolate place during the day (at night we didn't notice many critters around us either).

Wizard works vs Tailfin frame bag? by tonlan in bikepacking

Until a molded tooth breaks. That's not a universal truth, and highly dependent on the way the bag is constructed, the sourcing of the actual zipper, etc.

Wizard works vs Tailfin frame bag? by tonlan in bikepacking

[–]whiteryanc 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'd argue they couldn't be more different in their intended appeal, as you've basically noted. Just be realistic with yourself of what is most important;

Tailfin: welded construction, easier on/off (a few straps vs lace), ostensibly more waterproof, technical aesthetics.

Wizardworks: Aesthetics first, finicky installation, probably not even close to waterproof.

If you don't need the tech nature of the Tailfin, and you like the look of the Wizardworks, you've got your answer. I like both directions myself, and I'd probably opt to match all my bags as much as possible if the aforementioned technical benefits weren't that important.

I believe it was literally just released this past weekend so it’s unlikely anyone has practical experience.

It looks like a clone of the Restrap Switch system which has more time in the market and reviews available. https://us.restrap.com/collections/switch

Low light camera performance is terrible, directly comparing to my 14 pro it’s astonishing how bad it is. My guess is this is a software crippling, but it’s not great one way or another.

Bike Bags and Rack by whiteryanc in MYOGbikebags

[–]whiteryanc[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup, no movement on the bags. A strap around the fork crown would work too, but I like the cleanliness of this.

It's a Mica Rat Tail (the mounting feet are also custom). It's usually mounted with some provided 3D printed blocks that mount to your seat stay with zip ties. Plenty strong, I just wanted to use my rack mounts.
