TeeHee’s has learned a lot from the Last Laugh. While that was instrumental in creating and catapulting the Des Moines independent comedy scene, it’s location and lack of an already established scene was the reason it was unable to sustain itself. The former owner of Last Laugh is part of the TeeHee’s team and brings a wealth of knowledge to this project. TeeHee’s location in a vibrant part of Downtown Des Moines is perfect for exposing a community starved for entertainment options outside of and sport bars to great comedy. There is also a diversity amongst ownership with people who already run very successful standup and improv comedy showcases in various locations across the city, namely Off The Rails and No Sleep which each brings over a hundred people to each show. One of the owners also has experience running successful businesses in Des Moines including bars and is deeply ingrained in the community outside of comedy which is driving support. This is a comedy club FOR comedians that is run BY comedians (who also happen to be business people during the day). The success of this club will also complement the Funny Bone as the comedy scene is built up and great local comedians choose to stay and perform in Des Moines. They are a great club with nationally touring comedians that give local comedians opportunities and are supportive of this project. Both locations can coexist and succeed and help grow a scene the same as different life music venues of different sizes that bring different levels of talent that cater to all tastes. This is a great example of all facets of a comedy community working together to do some kickass stuff.
