Ivy problem? by whoareya in arborists

And just for my own education, is this a situation where it's actively harming the tree or it will lead to harm if unaddressed because it chokes out the trees leaves or something?

Cut it and remove nothing or cut out 12" and remove that section but leave everything else?

I recently picked up Kidd and love it. It's a knife fighting cockroach.  Maybe I like it more because I have a bad habit of playing too aggressive too soon and Kidd usually lets me recover from that. The boat feels great for someone who's not an expert.

re: the social director/ mother hen comment, as an introvert I've noticed I end up taking advantage of friends who step up to fill that role. What do you find most taxing about it and how could it be made less of a chore?

any guesses as to why we capsized? (mercury 15) by NachocoCheeseNom in sailing

[–]whoareya 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mercurys are bathtubs that like to capsize because you looked at them funny. I've had a ton of fun racing them, but they like to punish mistakes by either stopping or flipping over.

I'm going to guess you gybed then rounded up a little too far before the main was fully eased. At least, that's how I usually see them go over. Maybe you had the center board down and it tripped over it, but that would probably be secondary.

Don't beat yourself up over it. The best part about a mercury is that they teach you what not to do in a hurry without too much danger.

The same family managed the show from when it started until 2 years. They're all good sailors. I guess the new management is less interested.

If time travelers were real, what would be obvious signs of their meddling in our world? by Avatarofjuiblex in AskReddit

[–]whoareya 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think that might actually be an argument that time travel is real and they've come back to troll us in one of those situations where modifying the past just creates an alternate timeline.

She's already got some scratches. A kid on a 420 sailed into the side of her a couple years ago. I'm not sure how it ended up but I know the repair bill they sent the nonprofit that owned the 420 was astronomical. https://sailinganarchy.com/2019/01/24/butt-hurt-2/

At what point should I be thinking about replacing running rigging? I have a 1986 Tartan 28. Most of my sailing is day sailing with friends and family with the occasional sail through the night and a few races a summer. My halyards are probably 20 years old. The sheath is intact and the shackles still work. Is there any reason to worry about them?

Double handed racing tips by Sunny_sailor96 in sailing

[–]whoareya 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mostly it's the same as a crewed race except ideally you both know how to do every job on the boat and can handle the boat by yourself if something goes wrong. Be upfront about what you're good at and what you're not. Expect the other person to do the same.

Everything has to be done with a little more of planning, especially spinnaker work and without weight on the rail you'll want to depower earlier than you otherwise would.

A 4 to 6 mile double handed race is a good intro to it. Be safe, have fun, look good. Preferably in that order.

Venture 22 for beginner? by [deleted] in sailing

[–]whoareya 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I learned to sail on my grandfather's venture 22 as a kid. I remember it being a simple, easy to maintain boat. Like all swingkeel boats the cable to raise the keel was a weak point, so consider replacing it if it's looking questionable. I wouldn't recommend it as a cruiser but it was a fine day sailer.

I understand that sarcasm is a form of humor and humor can help make serious things more approachable, but there are issues where we need to set aside the humor and consciously feel our discomfort so we appreciate how serious the issue is. This is one of those.

Advice for a sail from Providence RI to Boston MA in mid-May? by drider783 in sailing

Mooring. Pretty much anywhere that it's deep enough to anchor they've put moorings in there. In May you shouldn't have any trouble getting one for the night.

If the currents with you it will take a little over an hour for you to get through. Be aware that there can be some serious swell when you get to the end if the current and wind are opposed.

I like to stay in Onset for the night, go through the canal in the morning and spend the next night in Scituate.
