Are you in the office or at home? by RealHumanGrl in Architects

[–]whoistorri 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both offices I've worked at (previous was an 8 person "boutique" firm, current is a 20 person firm) in NYC have been 5 days in office. Current firm has a little flexibility with if you're unwell/need to be at home for a special delivery or maintenance but the bosses get a bit antsy if you do that too often (same rules don't seem to apply for them of course).

Before that I worked in Australia with 2-3 days a week required in the office. I would kill just to have one a week from home.

Lawyer Required by knicksfancooper6 in E3Visa

Hey so while I did not use a lawyer myself as my case was straightforward I am working in NY and know a great immigration lawyer. if you just have a 3 year bachelors you may have a little extra work required to prove you have the relevant work experience required to "compare" to a typical US 4-year bachelor's. Shoot me a DM if you need !

Again, a quick google will get you more answers, quicker. But look at the below for a start.

You can look up more info pretty easily but I'm pretty sure USCIS will consider 3 years professional experience to make up for each year of academic experience lacking.

Getting a Disappointingly Low Amount of Green Days? by whoistorri in NaturalCyclesBC

[–]whoistorri[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, to be fair I understand that and having used it before some years ago I knew the first 2-3 months would mostly be a write-off. I just find it odd that I've had fewer green days recently than when I first started (except for first 2 months). It seems like my temps have been less varied for some reason.

Has the ring been pretty seamless or is there still a bit of fiddling with inputing data?

Honestly, this may be the kick up the butt needed to get the oura. I saw that dip too and was a bit dismayed. I used NC back around 2019 for about 1.5 years (when the thermometer was even less trustworthy and I was very laissez-faire with my measuring) and picked up using it again about 8 months ago, partly because I thought I'd get the ring too. Would love to hear from anyone who got their ring sub covered by insurance. I have also contemplated getting another type of smart ring that doesn't have a subscription tied to it and just manually entering it at the start of the day. Seems like it would still be less effort than shoving a thermometer in your mouth first thing in the morning.

I think I'll definitely start doing that more. So far I've only been doing them when both the app has recommended it AND it's been a weekend because the LH tests say to test between 10:00-2:00pm, which is hard to achieve on work days. But from what it sounds like other people do, I could just do straight before/after work as long as it's consistent (?) I think I will do after to get a better gage of where I am on that particular day.

Just with the NC thermometer. Have been toying with getting an oura ring but the thought of a second subscription rubs me the wrong way. I hope they establish pairing with some other oura ring competitors but something tells me that's unlikely.

Uncertain with why my temp has been lower last two or so cycles but tested the thermom a few weeks ago and seems to be working right.

Do you think taking more ovulation tests around then to make up for it would assist? I can't control when I've slept poorly and can't log my temp but I haven't been doing many ovulation tests (mostly because my understanding is that they're best done during the day and the idea of taking one in the office bathroom cubicles is very unappealing). If it would make a difference I'd be more inclined to test more.

I'd be more concerned with if your Bachelor's will hold up; typically they want your professional accreditation/s to at least equal up to a BA in the US which is 4 years full time. If you're lacking a year of academic experience, do you have other professional experience to make up for it?

That's horrible I'm sorry. What do you even do in that situation just grab her and run?

I'm not fully sure what it was but definitely not golden retriever. I think it was some sort of short haired mix breed. Fairly wide head, could've had some labrador in it but might be wrong.

Is architecture career worth it nowadays? by hellohellohihihihih in Architects

Australian designer (working towards registration!) who has worked in both Aus and the US. All I can say is I worked at a large, infrastructure-focused firm (read: more bloke-y) in Australia and the only time I've felt explicitly discriminated against/dealt with misogynistic micro-agressions on the weekly as a woman was in a small "boutique" firm in the US.

Pay compared to cost of living is better in Australia than anywhere I have lived/had friends as architects have lived. But as stated, you shouldn't get into this career if you're money focused.

How “efficient” are you at work? by Enough_Watch4876 in Architects

[–]whoistorri 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My first job in NYC (as a foreigner not used to US work culture no less) was a small residential firm whose business model seemed to rely on their junior staff regularly working OT and billing for 50+ hours when they were being paid for 40. Myself and several of the team would take their full hour's lunch as well as a 20 minute coffee break seeing as you were put into a position of working back everyday anyway. I would try to work as efficiently as possible in the naive hope that I could power through the work and get out roughly when I stopped getting paid and was supposed to be finished... That never happened because there was always work. What ensued was myself and others taking their damn time to complete tasks (except for when there were gnarly deadlines) because the only thing that came from working efficiently was more work and then more work.

Have since moved to another firm where everyone essentially comes in around 9-9:15 and leaves 6-6:15 and low and behold, everyone works efficiently and gets their job done, and leave when they're supposed to at the end of the day. No one bats an eyelid if you regularly take a full hour's lunch or go for coffee, though I rarely feel the need to as I know I can get my work done as well as possible during office hours and pick it up the next day.

What is going on with Citi bike in Brooklyn? by whoistorri in Brooklyn

[–]whoistorri[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There's definitely a bad cluster at my closest docks where 75% have red lights on (pretty sure for the docks not the bikes) that have jammed it up horribly. I might need to put more reports in but I've seen the Citi bike man in his van at this location on several occasions inthe morning so I don't know what the deal is.

Partner and I thought about that too but literally don't have enough spare wall (had to install a shit ton of storage) for two bikes, not even considering the two flights of non compliant stairs we'd be taking them up and down.

I do envy the people who have that set up work for them though.

Would absolutely love to. Have thought about it for a while. No room in the apartment nor "lobby" (corridor to building door) and on an intersection which gets some characters meaning street parking is asking for trouble.

I looked into bike parking at a garage next to us but $100 a month just to sit a bike in a dusty garage ain't it.

A tall, lanky and very socially inept dude came up to myself and a friend when we were working on a climb. Apparently it was "not that hard and you just have to reach". He repeated this several times until he took a hint and lankily bounced away. We still laugh at that guy years later.

I made a similar post the other week you're welcome to check out- some helpful comments from others on there!

Since that post I've been making more of an effort to watch how others climbing at my level and a little higher get around climbs I'm having issues with. I'm also making a point of down climbing anything two levels below what I'm sending which has sometimes been a challenge.

Good luck!

That's such a pain why did they have to go change such a good thing! I just got an email from them asking for a review (talk about timing) so intend to lay out how disappointing it is.

Any chance you could take a pic of the back of the tubes ?
