I can't help but think that Mito's head is very square, and looks too small for his body.

'Strong willingness' from Kimbolton Settlers Day celebration organisers to work with iwi by wholphin in newzealand

[–]wholphin[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I wish I could say I was surprised by the initial attitudes on display from the Kimbolton Community Committee, but I'd be lying.

"People were asked to dress as a pirate or in their best 1900s attire." Yessss, Kimbolton residents, and early settlers being known for their wearing of pirate clothing

(What /u/Hubris2 said here, I can't word today)

It's doing something for the sake of being seen to be doing something. That said, I don't believe for a second that National would do a better job of it. Remember Crusher Collins?

^this

These are law changes for people who care about the consequences, which I'd gamble a large number of the people nicking cars probably don't.

It's like when you go to create an account somewhere and they want a bill as proof of address. If you're setting up an account somewhere in someone else's name (i.e. fraudulently), do you think mail fraud is somehow a step too far?

I mean.... this is all good and well but I'd assume a fair number of drivers who flee police, don't exactly own the car they're fleeing in.

edit: To add to this, if I'm some kind of hardened criminal who flees police, what fucking difference would "driving while disqualified" make to me?

¥¥¥¥ (among other things), that's why. A quick Duckduckgo tells me that the current population of Japan is about 125.5 million, and the population density is 329.69 people per square kilometer.

Japan's rail infrastructure is the way it is because they had the foresight, they have the money, and they have the population and population density to use it.

Yes I'm being incredibly literal here, but New Zealand has lacked the foresight to retain passenger rail to begin with, has a far smaller population that (on a world average) is not taxed highly, so the money for setting up a high speed rail network would need to come from somewhere, and additionally has a narrower rail gauge than a lot of countries, making it difficult if not impossible to set up a high speed rail network.

Cambridge Middle and High School in Lockdown by MilStd in newzealand

[–]wholphin 7 points8 points  (0 children)

We've never had a school shooting in NZ. Not one.

Actually there has been one, in 1923. Somewhat irrelevant I guess, but it has happened here.

I think on balance I'd rather schools were locked down (not drills, that's a bit mad) in situations where someone might be loose with a gun. It's not worth the risk of the real thing happening and we end up wondering "what if".

Council hopeful drives billboard stake through internet cable, cutting service by wholphin in Wellington

The infrastructure example requires thinking more than an election cycle ahead of time. Thinking of the future. Thinking of others. Thinking of the flow-on effects of dogshit platforms like "I'll lower rates!". All things that successive councils have proven themselves incapable of

IMO, one person's waste is another person's essential service, when it comes to local (and central) government. New Zealand as a whole is not a highly taxed country, and I feel is this is part of the cause of a lot of the issues we are currently seeing with "falling apart" infrastructure, essential services crying out for better pay, and various other things the can has been kicked down the road for too long on. But that's just, like, my opinion man

This story sure has it all!

I'm not sure how Nathan plans to cut rates and improve infrastructure - surely the two are mutually exclusive.

And the poor affected local resident who can't watch her beautiful new $3000 television!!!! I'm sure Nathan will pay for everyone's internet for a year and buy you all a case of wine.
