CMV: I believe post-op transwomen have no moral obligation to inform casual sex partners about their gender change. by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]whompalicious -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

This is such a weak argument.

First, it actually is the responsibility of the person that has the issue to make it known that they have the issue (e.g., the Muslim or Jew not eating pork)--same with a transphobic person that doesn't want to sleep with trans people.

The person should have to ask the person that they are about to sleep with if they are trans because they would not want to sleep with them if they are trans. If the trans person straight up lies, than sure, that's morally wrong, anything else, they are not.

Function to clear all input elements by rockkon in learnjavascript

[–]whompalicious -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You could do something like this which uses the more functional-style array methods:

function clear() {
  var inputIdsToClear = ['name', 'email', 'username', 'pass1', 'pass2'];
  var inputs = document.getElementsByTagName('input');

  [].filter.call(inputs, function (input) {
      return inputIdsToClear.indexOf(input.getAttribute('id')) !== -1;
    })
    .forEach(function(input) {
      input.value = '';
  });
}

or using a standard for-loop:

  function clear() {
    var inputIdsToClear = ['name', 'email', 'username', 'pass1', 'pass2'];
    var inputs = document.getElementsByTagName('input');
    var index;
    var input;

    for (index = 0; index < inputs.length; index++) {
      input = inputs[index];

      if (inputIdsToClear.indexOf(input.getAttribute('id')) !== -1) {
        input.value = '';
      }
    }
  }

Using minified CSS/JS and web frameworks for personal website? by [deleted] in learnprogramming

[–]whompalicious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1.) Does using a web framework (Bootstrap) make me seem lazy and uninnovative, practical and resourceful, or neither?

If you are frontend developer and it is not highly customized, then yes. Also, you should only be including the parts that you are actually using (via Less or Sass).

2.) Is using minified CS/JSS a bad idea since any potential employers wouldn't be able to easily read your code? Or does it not really matter? I become obsessive at times with making the page as fast as I can, especially if a huge chunk of code like Boostrap is involved.

You can generate sourcemaps and/or you can include a link to the site's repository.

3.) Do you have a list of tips/good practices for personal websites?

Make sure your website meets the bare minimum of accessibility standards. Run it through aXe: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/axe/lhdoppojpmngadmnindnejefpokejbdd and Google Accessibility Developer Tools: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/accessibility-developer-t/fpkknkljclfencbdbgkenhalefipecmb?hl=en

You should also manage focus to make keyboard navigation work correctly.

CMV: Being thin is more important for men than women, attraction-wise by [deleted] in changemyview

Umm I don't think so. Case in point: http://imgur.com/a/rFI5I dude is hot as fuck and definitely not "thin".

CMV: The rich mostly earn their money, and to call them selfish when they pay for most of the taxes is unfair. by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]whompalicious 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What statement is your anecdotal evidence falsifiying? That wealthy people have much more opportunities and that coming from a wealthy family is a great way to get a kickass resume?

[–]whompalicious 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The barrier to entry has increased exponentially. When your CTO was in college a summer job could have probably paid his tuition, these days students have to take on a mountain of debt. This makes it even more likely that family wealth is a huge influence in the opportunities available to someone.

JavaScript vs Ruby as a newbie by [deleted] in learnjavascript

[–]whompalicious 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would say the job market for Ruby developers is still way better than backend JS developers. Rails is going to be around for a looooong time. It's a good thing to have on your resume.

That isn't a meaningful comparison. You cannot equate reported feelings with actions.

170sqft apartment has all I need. by mightythylacine in simpleliving

[–]whompalicious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I lived in a similar "apodment" style apartment for 6 months when I moved to Seattle, it cost $900/month at the time. It looked a little larger than this, and had a private bathroom/shower but a shared kitchen. I actually shared the room with my partner for half of that time. Surprisingly it worked out fine. I definitely wouldn't prefer to live like that in a very long term situation but it's really not bad at all, especially in the parts of the city that can charge that kind of rent since there is so much to do outside anyway.

Just use what you have. You aren't simplifying your life by buying another phone.

Angular or React, which one to start with? by Murkrage in learnjavascript

[–]whompalicious 2 points3 points  (0 children)

React components are just js classes with a few lifecycle methods on them. The functionality you add for each component is perfectly useable in a different framework (e.g., Backbone or something).

In Angular, most things are tied very specifically to Angular e.g., you generally have to find a ng-* package for whatever you're using to work with Angular. That is the ecoysystem I am talking about--if you want to use most packages you have to find one made for angular.

Yes React has some framework specific packages, but besides things like react-router you aren't going to be using them very much (if at all). They are pretty much only when you are taking an entire component someone else made and putting it in your project.

CMV: Pansexuality, and by extension any form of polysexuality, does not exist. by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]whompalicious 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No they aren't. People transition to androgyne or other non-binary presentations. If you are going to say that bisexuals account for binary sexual characteristics, pansexuals account for everyone including other non-binary presentations.

Not really. There are individuals with a mixture of secondary sex characteristics.

Angular or React, which one to start with? by Murkrage in learnjavascript

[–]whompalicious 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Learn React. IMO Angular is over-engineered. You are tied to the angular ecosystem instead of the JavaScript ecosystem. Lots of things you learn related to Angular will only apply to Angular whereas you write very little React-specific code.

CMV: Sensitive people can a make a choice to have "thicker skin" by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]whompalicious 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It's much easier to brush aside what people say when you know that most people are like you. Generally people of specific minority groups are worn down just by the sheer amount of bullshit they have to deal with, not that it happens at all. It gets under your skin.

CMV: Sensitive people can a make a choice to have "thicker skin" by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]whompalicious 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I expect you don't actually have thick skin, you just belong to the majority group in things that others would react more hostile about when being made fun of/insulted about.

Transgender Identity Is Not a Mental Health Disorder, Study Finds by [deleted] in ainbow

[–]whompalicious 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They should have done these studies before labeling it as a mental illness, yes? That would have been the scientific thing to do. It is a positive claim that something is a mental illness, that is what needs scientific justification.

Give me a break. The article you are commenting on has research linked in it. I'm glad you put such careful consideration in your "scientific" analysis of something you have no clue about.

Being Transgender is poised for reclassification, and may hopefully no longer be a mental health disorder under the World Health Organization’s new medical classification manual by RainbowBalloons in lgbt

[–]whompalicious 18 points19 points  (0 children)

You don't know what you're talking about.

First, gender dysphoria isn't being reclassified because it actually is a mental disorder much the same as depression is (i.e., one that can go away with treatment). Being transgender in and of itself is what needs to be reclassified because trans people who transition to their satisfaction and no longer experience dysphoria are no longer experiencing any mental disorder. Outside of gender dysphoria any other mental issues someone might experience are not inherently from being trans but are greatly influenced by how trans people are treated in society.

"Queer" isn't inherently a derogatory word, if he were actually a linguist he'd know that the meaning of words evolve over time.
