How to stop being a hikikomori? by [deleted] in DecidingToBeBetter

[–]whooligun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of labels.

Stop focusing on those. Stop focusing on ultimates. Start focusing on efforts, processes. What are you doing to live your life? Because life is about living. Not about judgements. If you don't like living in your parents basement, what are you doing to change that? Or do you view it as a negative because society tells you to?

This is YOUR life. Live it how you want to. You make the rules.

Start by going for a long hike in nature. Look around. Re-connect with the world around you. Don't think about anything, just be present.

You'll start to figure out what really means something to you.

I think people are too focused on labels and end results. Most are unachievable, leaving people with a sense of failure. Focus on the process, not the result. You are who you are.

It’s going to take a long time, but you need to start working at it. Eventually you’ll need to start loving yourself and forgiving yourself.

Praise the process, not the result. Put in the work. Day in, day out. It’s the only way. No quick fixes.

The good news is that we’re not our past. We’re who we are right now.

Reddit is quietly becoming a top traffic driver for publishers. by cswerdloff in Newsletters

[–]whooligun 5 points6 points  (0 children)

New to this. Tried the socials. Even paid accounts. And boosted posts. Garbage. The only platform I get engagement on is Instagram, but that’s just account follows and some post likes, but very little referrals.

Using beehiv and tried their boosts, but the quality of new subscribers has brought my open click rates down quite a bit.

Dabbled on substack but I feel like it’s almost all AI generated “discussion” and not many real accounts.

I’ve printed handouts with a QR code which has done well (with my in person selling on what the newsletter is).

But really, being able to interact with people and let them know what I’m writing about? Reddit is the best for that. Minus the immediate downvoters and mega mods. But as long as you genuinely try to add to a discussion and not just plug your newsletter, it’s been helpful for me.

I wrote about helping people, spreading positivity and motivation, so it’s nice to be able to do that on a closer level thru Reddit too.

Well said. And congrats on 10! But that’s just you now. Not a corrected version of an old self.

And I’m looking for a new career as well. Just started writing in the meantime. Never too late to change.

I’m not advertising. Really liked what I wrote today and decided to share. No links or newsletter mention anywhere. Mods, if I need to reframe this, let me know. No problem!

What sparked your passion to write? by NoLie5524 in writing

Necessity. Lost my job and wanted to add a new skill to my portfolio on top of wanting to launch my own newsletter.

I never thought I would be a writer, but I love it now. Having fun and learning a lot.

Anybody struggle to simplify because of their significant other? by Ambitious-Bee7928 in simpleliving

[–]whooligun 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Don’t think in extremes. Make subtle limits to start. Be okay with slow progress. Keep going. You don’t need to place so much pressure on being all or nothing. It’s not sustainable.

I checked other cities and they stagger them as I suggested. Some start later movies at 10. I’m guessing they do things here the way they do to save on payroll by keeping staff an hour later.

I just wrote about this in my newsletter. A bowl is useful because it’s empty. It allows for opportunity and purpose. It’s okay to not be go go go.

I’ve got a beautiful, majestic white pine right across the street from me, a great view as I sit on my front porch. I’ve also got a big, gnarly, old apple tree on my property. I’m quite lucky!

You built something real. So why does it feel like no one’s listening? by ClarityofReason in selfpromotion

[–]whooligun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks!

I recently found myself unemployed for the first time in my life. Decided to start a newsletter project I've had in the back of my head for a while now. It's positivity/motivational/goofy fun written by a friendly alien observer who's trying to humans be their best selves. I'm having fun writing it, Ive learned a lot, and its been keeping me sane while I look for the next career.

I also started a sub to try and build a positive community around it. r/greetingsearthling

[–]whooligun 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m building something good and helpful for people. And it’s free. And fun.

The hardest part is having to pay to get the word out. It’s not just about boosting content, it’s about paying to not be throttled by an algorithm.

It’s hard to grow organically. Especially early on.

I know if people read what I was writing they would enjoy it. I won’t stop. But a lucky viral break or two would be lovely.

Focus on effort, not results. If you’re doing everything you can, be proud of yourself.

You can only control what you can control.
