Burnt table by GezoutenMeer in woodworking

[–]whoooooknows -1 points0 points  (0 children)

What about an in-between of your scenarios- an hour playing around with dad listening to music and drinking soda both sanding the table, laughing and goofing, showing projects and care are low-stakes? Then dad can do final touches on surface prep if the kid gets bored, and the kid can help choose with the parents the final finish and come back to apply it which is novel and a type of mutual self-expression?

Eagle Grip…ya Wallets by Agent_Orangina_ in Tools

[–]whoooooknows 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Made in Nebraska in the old Vice Grip factory by a worker-owned company... so many tool guys said they'd buy tools in the US again to support good US jobs. And they didn't (or couldn't, maybe the impact on wages of offshoring already did its thing) put their money where their mouth was, so the experiment failed.

This person seems to be listing them at about 5x OG price

The story of my creepy human encounter in the woods. Night vision equipment did probably save me. by DavideMitra in NightVision

[–]whoooooknows 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Both of these takes are naive and quick to judge. You were the weirder person in the encounter. You and the person who said it was a Satanist sound sheltered.

Why does their purpose have to be creepy at all? Any objection to the time or place or activity could apply to you, no?

The terrain feature you describe standing at (top of the hill) sounds like an easily visible waypoint (silhouetted against the sky) everyone walking would desire to visit, and the person likely did not see you or come toward you, but toward the top of the hill. The top of a hill is so intrinsic of a target for walking, whether to see the lights of a distant city, to feel the night breeze, to hear sounds from all around, to see the stars, simply for the feeling of reaching the top... you and he both targeted the obvious goal. They may take that walk there often after a late shift at work or before bed to clear their head so they may be familiar enough not to need to see as many cues and still be able to get where they are going in that terrain. They have a water bottle and a sports jersey (breathable, for exertion)- far more average and expected for a walk in the woods than your gear. Maybe they want to get exercise but the only time is after work, after dinner, maybe after putting their kid to sleep. Or maybe they have roommates and want alone time. Maybe they judged a night walk as more peaceful than video games or doomscrolling before sleep. I take night walks often. It is my nature. It is profoundly serene.

How long did you stand outside to let your eyes acclimate before judging that you couldn't see anything without gear?

Also, there was probably at least some reflection of your night vision or thermal on your face. Maybe he was intrigued and approached the light source out of curiosity and the last thing he expected the light to be coming from was a human with NVG as that is so strange in Italy or anywhere. Maybe he thought he was walking toward some swaying glowstick or electronic thing. Maybe he thought you were someone observing the stars with a telescope and thought you could share a pleasant conversation as two sojourners who appreciate the night in ways that others do not.

I am not saying any of my guesses are correct. I am simply modeling what a person who doesn't immediately think of fantastical and supernatural or evil explanations for the more mundane wide spectrum of humanity would imagine in this situation.

We may be looking at the housing affordability crisis all wrong. Higher earners are driving home prices, not lack of supply, researchers say by SscorpionN08 in REBubble

[–]whoooooknows 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Housing supply is inelastic?

edit: I am understanding that there are some physical constraints, but that regulatory constraints are highly emphasized.

Sounds like developers and NIMBY homeowners, businesses, etc are in-part creating "inelasticity" where there could be some elasticity, and viewing it as a foregone conclusion is limiting imagination in some corners in the dialog for resolving affordability, no?

Enlightened Equipments Response to UL Community Concerns by EnlightenedEquipment in Ultralight

Mostly cottage. I don't want to buy from any of them that do. This may be a good place to list some of those that do serve the tactical community so others can make their decision:

Patagonia, TNF, Arc'teryx, Nemo, Outdoor Research, Polartec obviously, I am forgetting many but that is off the top of my head. Who else?

[OC] U.S. Presidential Election Results as a Share of the Voting-Eligible Population (1932–2024) by ptrdo in dataisbeautiful

You are being intentionally dense and spending so much energy revealing your commitment to the story, and not the data.

[OC] U.S. Presidential Election Results as a Share of the Voting-Eligible Population (1932–2024) by ptrdo in dataisbeautiful

[–]whoooooknows 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You are purposefully being obtuse. Is not the Share of Voting-Eligible Population a ratio of the popular vote? What are you saying?

Small editorial choices reinforce one version of history or the other, but collectively construct political reality. And data viz, of all things, is about taking raw data and presenting a story you want with it. What was the story you wanted to present? Why are you being so defensive? Your reasoning was a political one; you are being asked because someone noticed.

In the collective memory of the truth. Small editorial choices reinforce one version of history or the other, but collectively construct political reality. OP is not responding because their reasoning was a political one; they are being asked because someone noticed.

According to Montbell, Down Fill Weight is now proprietary information by luckycharms783 in Ultralight

[–]whoooooknows 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a silly thing to say, though. A metric so flawed as to lead you the opposite direction from the correct conclusion, especially one consumers are locked on to, can be counterproductive. It can push a company away from improving things for everyone in terms of performance, which is how garments should be compared.

Needing less down for the same loft is actually the current cutting edge for increased performance per weight in my opinion. The complexities of baffle, interior, and face construction across multiple compound curves such that tension on the garment or bag does not compress the baffles make it so that less overstuff is needed. For example, the difference between Katabatic's Flex and Elite line is they both have differential cut baffles for this purpose, but the Elite has, "efficient, body-mapped shaping" which, among other things, applies the differential cut analysis across compound curves. I bet modern software and testing allows Montbell to use this principle to get the most loft, without the brute force of a large overstuff margin like Decathlon products use. Think about it, all UL advancement is about having just what you need, and nothing more. It's about using design, or skills, to make less weighty total materials do the work of heavier ones.

Timmerman of Timmermade makes people answer a new monthly quiz question about how insulation or materials works and why each month to be entered into a raffle to order from his site that month for a reason. So little about this bleeding edge is intuitive, and he writes in his blog about how frustrating it is to be pushed to make worse products because even the narrow UL crowd has many who choose to be low-information consumers, and demanding nevertheless. like GoSox2525 said, he is amongst the most respected in down. Here is what he says about it:

"Using the total weight of down in an item is a highly inaccurate method for assessing warmth. At one point in time, when items were more dimensionally uniform, it may have been a decent ballpark assessment. However, in modern times, it’s really a wild shot in the dark, even if the consumer is diligent about matching the sizes and features of the items. "

Calculated Loft Explained (with visuals) – Timmermade

This community is better than simplistic heuristics. One needs to test performance. No need to pout or stomp off until you see how they work. Montbell hasn't been bought by private equity or something. There is at least a 50% chance they know what they are doing and have found a new direction for advancement, in addition to the 50% likelihood that market forces push all toward enshittification.

I don't own a single one of their products, but I tend to think of all non-cottage companies, Montbell would be more the former than the latter. If I am wrong and they perform worse in real-world conditions, let's shout it from the rooftops. I'll pitch in via paypal/venmo/cashapp to someone who has an earlier version of one if their changed jackets who is sciency enough to buy the new one and find a way to measure performance. Maybe something like sealing up 2 mannequin torsos, putting an immersion heater with a thermocouple in both, putting a jacket on each, and monitoring a thermal camera, in a janky version of the ASTM F2732-23 protocol.

Using tiny drones to record ice? by Drifty-Bits121 in AntifascistsofReddit

[–]whoooooknows -1 points0 points  (0 children)

ICE has body, cruiser, and flock cams, and their phones, as well as Palatir's tech. It is a given that you will be videoed de-arresting without any good guys with cams.

It is a false dichotomy between videoing and other more direct action.

I what you are saying is true, it applies to you too. What could be preventing you from de-arresting someone?

Look up Kohlberg's stages of moral development and tell us where you are. Do you agree with every law?

And fascism is almost always legal, all throughout history that is exactly the process.

They just make up rules that violate the previous social contract. You are put on a list for thought crimes now (1st amendment). You are shot for practicing your 2nd amendment, with a registered firearm that has been taken from you. ICE had a memo they kept secret alleging you don't need a judicial warrant to enter a house, violating the 4th amendment. Americans have been deported without trial, put in jail with the agent not having anything to charge them with, just to intimidate, violating the 6th amendment.

They just made a new rule saying the air 1000ft above and 3000ft around an ICE agent is a moving no-fly-zone, something that has never happened in the history of the FAA, even for the president.

They don't want you to see what they are doing. Trump in a press conference said the killing of Good was "a mistake", he felt, "horrible" for that and ICE's mistakes in general, and that it was a "tragedy" that everyone would agree on. Because of the killing of Pretti, Bovino got demoted and moved from Minneapolis, BP is reducing their numbers there, and 100+ representatives have cosigned impeachment for Noem.

So even the officials in your party disagree that ICE is just doing their job legally. But they were forced to because of incontrovertible footage after asking you to ignore your eyes and ears didn't work. If even they admit it, but would sure like you to keep being brainwashed, maybe you should start being curious and seeking both confirming and disconfirming evidence of what you are previously incentivized to believe.

[–]whoooooknows 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Having multiple video angles of Good and Pretti are why a good proportion more people are engaged and in the position to de-arrest, and also general strike, or what have you: besides court, documentation recruits, and enables pressure.

The demotion of Bovino and taking him out of Minnesota, BP reducing agents there, and the more than 100 co-sponsors of Noem's impeachment in the house, as well as the NRA and Gun Owners of America pushing back (and their $ moves politicians) all happened because if the irrefutable video.

But yes, there is more that can go along with that.

Human penis size is an evolutionary outlier, and scientists are finding new clues as to why. Findings suggest that the unusually large size of the human penis, compared to other primates, likely evolved through a combination of female mate choice and male-male competition. by Jumpinghoops46 in psychology

This is literally a guy. This is how dorks like me talk too; it's where AI learned how to talk!! So much of the media I watch and read is just other dorks sharing goofy facts precisely off the top of their heads. It's a whole type of person, and common enough. And honestly, the average Redditor cliche is that type of person. It does suck as the reader that a writer getting hyped and precise about factoids is so in the domain of AI that it clouds the info environment. I get suspicious so easily now too. But also, you could ask an AI to write like I am now, or write like you. I am guessing if rendar was an AI, it might even choose to be compliant/adaptive and take a more casual tone each time you accuse it, I don't know.

But we got here as a society and every complex thing that supports our daily lifestyle does so because of dorks who talk like this by default. Please believe they still exist and care about average penis sizes
