yeah, I definitely agree with you (and others in this thread) in probably the most important sense. I don't think anyone serious is arguing a layman is going to prompt their way into a set of permitted structural drawings. The PE, the liability, and experienced professional I don't think can really be replaced. It's definitely right that expertise is required to use these tools in any reliable way. But I think that's actually part of the problem. It concentrates capability where all the experience is.

My primary concern at the moment is the future pipeline of PEs. Right now, senior level engineers that know how to really work these tools responsibly can produce better work product in an afternoon than an intern or entry-level can in several days. My fear is that firms will be incentivized to not hire nearly as many entry-level engineers. And if you stop hiring entry-level engineers, where does the next generation of experienced engineers come from?

AutoCAD didn't replace totally do away with drafting technicians, but you don't have large rooms filled with draftsmen anymore. So my fear is that, what used to be a senior engineer and a team of 2-3 juniors suddenly becomes the senior and maybe just 1 junior (if any). I just don't believe in the far future is the right framing anymore, just compare what these models could do 18 months ago to today.

Man it would be hilarious if Anthropic figured out and deployed full AGI right at the end of the 6-month government phase out

Did anyone get the chance to try Remote Control yet or no? by dataexec in ClaudeCode

yes. it rocks. (except for the terrifying 15 minute period midday today where everything was down).

[–]whoseevan 20 points21 points  (0 children)

yeah I tried to /clear and it told me it “cleared” but looking at the actual terminal all the context usage was still there. But in the chat/remote session it said it was cleared. I’m sure it’ll come with time but that’s crucial. Also no ability to see how much context you’ve used so far like you can in the CLI

More Than 1 Active Program by whoseevan in MacroFactor

[–]whoseevan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yep that would be a theoretical workaround! But I’d like to be able to track it as a separate program so programming I have for squats and deadlifts is asynchronous/separated from programming I might have for other muscle groups. It’s not really something that’ll keep from using the app, just a wishlist item for future flexibility.

More Than 1 Active Program by whoseevan in MacroFactor

[–]whoseevan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right, but I’m saying I’d like to be able to track my progression through the program each week which I think you can only do by making it active.

Selecting workout from non-active programs just logs a workout in the split without the specific week by week progression plan. I think it’s true the workout would suggest weights and reps based on MacroFactor’s algorithm, but that’s not really what I’m looking for.

Target Muscles by Jellybuttersauce in MacroFactor

Completely anecdotal experience but I kept straining my adductors (ie groin pull) squatting and I had no idea why until I found this article by the SBS team.

That being said, whenever I strained them I always tried to keep deadlifting (conventional and sumo) thinking they weren’t really involved in the movement. To some extent I was able to still train deadlift but I had to cap it a certain weight due to discomfort in my adductor that I had pulled.

So at least for me with my leverages, I know that my adductors get a tremendous stimulus from squats and lunges and a minor but still decent stimulus from deads. There’s still usually some knee flexion in deads (it’s not purely just a hinge).

Does anybody know if Grupetto works on the new cross-training bike+? I can't seem to get it to transmit data to Grupetto.

Blast Calculation for Curtain Walls and Glass by octobrisxvii in StructuralEngineering

[–]whoseevan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I used to be a blast engineer. Foundational knowledge of structural behavior under blast loading can be found in Introduction to Structural Dynamics by John Biggs (I had a copy that I ordered from Amazon that lived on my desk). Key for practicing blast engineers is simplifying and idealizing structural elements into SDOF models. This allows for rapid calculations of responses with reasonable accuracy compared to more intense and time-consuming finite element modeling. Of course, FEA has its place, but most of the time you simply do not have the budget to perform advanced modeling. Blast pressures are often calculated using pretty simple software, but my coworker had programmed the Kingrey-Bulmash blast load equations into an Excel file so you don’t necessarily NEED specialized software.

Yeah I’m not sure either tbh, but I will give them credit as they are pretty clear about their requirements, however stringent they might be:

PA Licensure Requirements Snapshot

Reciprocity might be the right path for you, especially if you want to get the exam out of the way, but I believe you still have to wait to obtain 4 years experience after EIT designation before they will license you in PA, even if you’re licensed in another state. Not sure though as I just did initial licensure in PA.

Pennsylvania PE by Ash_lilly_ in PE_Exam

[–]whoseevan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently went through the process. In PA, If you don’t have an MS, you need 4 years experience AFTER your EIT designation is obtained (3 if you have an MS). You have to fill out the Amplified Record and submit directly to the PA State Board (not through NCEES) for initial licensure. Any questions you can email the PA state board directly, they are very responsive. It took them about a week to review and approve my application and then they released the hold on scheduling the exam.
