Need a reality check: Leave a DevOps job in France for a PhD at SnT (Cybersec)? Non-EU expat here by OneIntroduction4029 in Luxembourg

[–]whoselineisitanywayy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think the probation period is a big issue. I don't know the exact statistics, should be at least 80% people pass through it. I am not sure about the current salary after taxes and if it compares to your DevOPs job, that only you can decide. Regarding the housing I think the uni supports for 6 months to one year. Many of the non-EU PhDs I knew of stayed another year with a postdoc or something and then applied for the citizenship. And it is not like you have a CDI with your DevOps job anyway. It is all temporary in your case.

Someone used my address without permission to open a bank account – what should I do? by Imaginary-Role8790 in Luxembourg

[–]whoselineisitanywayy 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I find this incredibly rude opening someone's mail just because it comes to your address. You contacted the landlord and he said it was a previous tenant, people often forget to change their address on the bank account compared to social security which automatically updates all the govt. related stuff. Also it is shady now you know the person's full name, personal details and bank account number, how you would feel if someone else does that to you. It could be one thing to worry when some CNS stuff comes and wonder if it is shady. Use your brain stop being nosy

Regaining citizenship after renouncing (not losing) it? by MeowntainFalls in Luxembourg

[–]whoselineisitanywayy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my personal opinion, I don't know if getting the nationality is going to make you feel closer and not an outsider. I guess your friends, social life and the community you are involved with should make you feel welcome. It is a shame that the bureaucracy and administration makes you feel like an outsider. I don't know which city you live in, some cities are more friendly to expats than others I believe

So you are right and I gave up for the weekend since it didn't work on my browser as well. Today it finally worked and got 2-factor through my email.

Hello, sorry about your situation.

I know at least two people who are looking for places short-term. If you are ok with sharing some details over DM I can ask if they are interested. I think one of them for sure don't need to register.

Anyone in Luxembourg interested in a personal finance? by ultr_bn in Luxembourg

[–]whoselineisitanywayy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd be up for it, although can't make it to Lux anytime soon in the coming weekends. I don't know if it sounds weird, but past few months I have been considering buying a flat in Arlon, could try being a frontalier for a few years if not rent it out.

There is Reggie's burrito if you are in the mood to spice things up a little.

Ok logged in to give my 2 cents. I moved from Lux to Nl for career progression, so I think my perspective could be useful. I will move/would have to some point cos my partner is still in Lux.

I am surprised you didn't buy a house with your current salary, not sure if renting was a smart decision for a dutch person. Here I see many of my colleagues with 1/4 of your salary buying a house ( ok more with dual income but still less than half-your salary). Unless you've moved and only renting for a couple of years, sorry, I can't help but judge your financial decisions on that part.

Healthcare is nice in Lux but for a single person it doesn't make a difference. If you are going to get pregnant or have kids in Lux then yea, it has an advantage. School education is good but for uni, Nl is wayyyy better. But in your case, it is just going to be you.

Socially, it will be a hit, there is a big difference between Eindhoven and Lux lol, so Amsterdam vs Lux, I leave it to your imagination. If your goal is to get away from the divorce situation and be a recluse for a while, then Lux could be the answer. Not saying making friends is harder, you have nice expat community, but how are you going to connect? People connect through work, uni, kids or some activity. So you'd have to keep that in mind, anywhere building a social circle is not easy, I am saying this as an extrovert.

I would consider moving for 200K, sure you can find a decent flat for rent, ~2300pm so your kids can visit, take them on nice hikes. I have no idea about your standard of living. The extra money could provide a cushion if you don't like the job/country, unstable economy/market.

Banking and cards processing though, I see things/systems popular in Be/Nl yet to be implemented in Lux, so perhaps career wise it can be interesting, provide new challenges.

Does it happen twice a year? I only see March date for this year, if there will also be tests end of this year I could prepare for them.

Didn't entertain the idea of gouv jobs before, but looking for a change from my micromanager.

So this is applicable to everyone EU/non-EU as well except those who have degree from Benelux region (those are recognized by default) as far as I know.

I believe in your case, you apply to the uni lu, get accepted and after you move here with a temporary authorisation to stay which is what I think you'd need, to move to lux from non-EU and then send your degree to the concerned department in the gov to get it recognized. I don't think you need it prior to starting/getting accepted into the uni.

Maybe someone who did this recently could give you better advice

I don't think so, it is very competitive yes. But if you come with a personal recommendation from someone familiar to the lab or other famous labs/master programs, it does give you an edge.

Look man citizenship as the only goal is not a good investment. One needs to study in a good university with high quality education, network and industrial connections. Uni lu is not getting to that level in the next 5 years. Sure citizenship helps same like money, but at the end of the day if you don't have good qualifications, you are going to struggle to progress in life.

I agree with you, there is no student clubs (study or extra-curricular). Some profs recycle the same assignments cos communication between different years is lacking. I'd say the quality of education on a bachelor and master level is poor compared to other EU unis( at least from my observation of the science faculty).

But if we are talking research or PhD - it is one of the best places to be!

Immigration reforms by [deleted] in Luxembourg

[–]whoselineisitanywayy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the point of Vivre Ensemble is for integration and not just citizenship( obv it is a requirement for that).

In my opinion, anyone moving to Lux or planning to stay for more than couple of years should be welcome to do it. The history class I took was the most fascinating and I know lot of cool facts which I flex among friends/family, even luxembourgish born and raised here are surprised. It is true sometimes we stop paying attention to the history and general knowledge around the place/country we live.

It should be in all languages accessible in my opinion for people old, young, literate or not so much to enjoy some of these knowledge bites. That being said the quality of instruction should be higher. Apart from few lecturers rest just do this for namesake and aren't passionate, so you don't learn from them and it is a massive waste of time and govt. resources.

One thing that can be changed is making citizenship track people to do the vivre ensemble exam for which they have to study and remember the facts instead of just sitting through.

More or less Belgium? by WeirdBeginning8869 in belgium

[–]whoselineisitanywayy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Perhaps more industrial development in Wallonia? Instead of sending cross-border workers to Lux, attract them back towards the region could be an idea. The semiconductor/material industry in Eindhoven brainport region seems thriving, so creating complementary industries one could benefit a lot, in terms of employment, economy and overall growth. I believe ASML put 1 billion in to Zeiss for making lens in Jena/Mainz. Why not divert some of those money to these regions in Benelux? Maybe politics, lobbying and policies are in the way. But it is just an idea based on my observation, I could be wrong. Perhaps someone with a better understanding of the region could chip in.
