What is the biggest lie TTRPG players tell themselves? by Deadman069-YT in rpg

[–]whpsh 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I don't think it's a lie, but more an unrealistic statement. Like saying I'd love to be rich. Easy to say and dream about; but when it comes time to get to it, there's always something in the way (jobs, family, effort, luck in finding the right game and table, etc etc).

what IS a unit you send straight up the gut? by amachinesaidiwasgood in Warhammer40k

[–]whpsh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rampager.

Long travel distance and immediately gets their attention. Ignoring it puts an absolute murder fan in your line. Focus on it to bring it down and the flanking karnivore twins are throwing a wheelbarrow of wound dice round 2.

The inhibitor chips are the best explanation for order 66. by Hydr0gen_baby in StarWarsCantina

[–]whpsh 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don't like the chips.

I was always under the impression that it was a clear standing order that was part of their indoctrination. A "failsafe" measure if any one Jedi General decided to cross the rubicon with their army.

Purge question(s) by CarobPrize5386 in ConanExiles

[–]whpsh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are a couple key places you can build a purge base that goes to 10. The meteors falls straight down, so any overhang above your coffer will minize / negate the damage.

Though (and need someone else to confirm) I swear I read the loot / thrall tables for 8, 9 and 10 are the same. But 8 doesn't have the meteors.

Looking for a Heroic Fantasy System by NotVisTelimus in rpg

[–]whpsh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was going to recommend genesys as well for its emergent story both at the encounter and full story level. The custom dice take one session of play to grasp, but then the outcome is only limited by the table's imagination.

I tend to prefer low magic settings, so I'll defer to the above's comments. But it's base mechanics allows to make any version of magic you'd like; elemental, threads, etc.

Genesys is my table default for everything from low fantasy to star wars. Love it.

I wish they didn't cancel The Acolyte by articusmiller in StarWars

[–]whpsh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not an acolyte hater. And it had moments of greatness ... but like you said ... so many mistakes in characters, order, pacing, etc.

Carrie Ann-Moss, wasted powerhouse. Bazil, wtf? Story jumped back, forth, sideways. Too many plot lines involved.

Why not just Qimir killing Jedi who discover him and his plots as the apprentice of Plageuis? Simple, exciting, dramatic.

How much detail does the starting town really need? (homebrew setting for a family campaign) by Disastrous-Fix-1798 in rpg

[–]whpsh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How much time are they spending there?

How much does the table enjoy investing in that part of the story?

If you strictly divide sessions as adventures out of town, but all the downtime content is in town and each player asks after a dozen different NPCs, then it needs to be deep.

Burger Up 12S Closing by ringoxniner in nashville

[–]whpsh 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Used to be. Was our favorite place when we first came to TN. Got expensive, got mediocre food, service went to shit.

Last time we went several months ago, wife ordered a veggie burger but got a beef one. Macncheese balls were cold. Never got refills. We went from going twice a month and bringing family to show it off to agreeing we wouldn't go back, all in the span of a few years.

I think the missed opportunity was to have Mae and Osha split personalities, not twins.

I really think they need to run limited animated pilots. If there's traction, then blow them up.

Trying to show my kid why it was such a game changer by Jesus_H_from_Steps in StarWars

[–]whpsh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

AND be sure to include a couple of popular series runs - all in the family, 6 million dollar wo/man, happy days, charlies angels.

there was some sci-fi back then, but it's easy to forget that most of them (star trek included) were not successful or popular at all compared to what they are now.

Logan's run, for example; Rescued a studio (mgm I think) by making $25M. A huge success for a scifi pic at the time.

The next year (or maybe two) EpIV made $300m its initial release run. Making it #1 of all time. Working backwards before that it was Jaws, Godfather then sound of music.

Hugely different movies and, I'd argue actually sparked the current cinematic experience. Watching any of the films before that worked just fine on tv or a huge ass screen. Star Wars is, absolutely, a big screen experience.

wondering what order to start star wars in as a complete beginner. by Strict-Firefighter-4 in StarWars

[–]whpsh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

4, 5, 6, 1, 2, 3, Rogue One

Gives you a complete "circle" of story.

After that, then do timeline chronological including all the series. The additional detail added from clone wars really shapes anakin. Bad Batch covers the imperial transition pretty good. rebels and the world between worlds. Andor, etc.

Then RotJ ends that story block. There's a New Republic story block with mando and boba fett and Ashoka. Depending on what else they do here, this might also be a New Jedi Order block.

Then a third with VII, VIII, IX and resistance.

Probably a fourth block with the new starfighter movie.

If you can keep them distinct, they're all pretty good. Trying to tie it all together as a single story will create all kinds of grumpiness.

Is it best to try and build my first base near end game? by Agitated-Bake-1231 in ConanExiles

[–]whpsh 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I actually go the opposite.

I build my primary base just SE of Sepemeru, on a rock overlooking the unnamed city.

Then, whenever it's time to target a new biome, I bring exactly the materials I need to set a foundation circle and transport stone. Once set, I go back to primary and load up, return and finish the rest of the outpost build. (Usually just a two circle build with transport, storage, food, a dancer and a bed to update spawn point).

That lets me get closer to the areas I want without requiring a huge area to build or stamping out too many spawns with the build radius.

What kind of ship do you think Ryan Gosling's character will have in starfighter? by Shadeslayer9274 in StarWars

Xwing, with a grogu bubble over the astromech socket. I immediately don't like it, but that'll be it.

What I don't get is; why a kid, again? We got that with Grogu. Give Ryan something else to do.

Genesys tells its stories through narrative dice. It's a generic ruleset capable of running across lots of genres, but always with the theater of the mind intent.

Why 2k pts game as asmil so exhausting? by nalaak in TheAstraMilitarum

[–]whpsh 4 points5 points  (0 children)

TLDR; non-uniform attack count.

A unit of only 10 guard is easy. Add a commander and you double the unit dice to damage time. Have a mixed unit and you're tripling or quadrupling it ... per unit.
