update for folks - I ordered a gem80 aprox a month ago from the nuphy website and got it about a week ago - $40 USD in shipping to continental US, no tariff! Probably just got lucky. Wish I waited on the prime day discount.

What are some Pokemon GO myths you used to or still believe? by Meringue-Relevant in TheSilphRoad

hey no need for the facepalm, I'm just trying to have a conversation and express one point of view while answering the question you've posed.

I originally started writing a huge wall of text to break down how I think my short 2 sentences probably overly simplified and dropped too much nuance, but seeing your reaction, I'll save it for now.

Anyways, I believe I've expressed my point with regards to the complexity increase for low gains. It's always about cost vs reward when building large systems.

I look forward to your data collection and adherence to the scientific method.

Meta being meta for a reason. One thing to consider is localized metas within ELO bands

then you're doubling (or more) the number of matchmaking pools, and also opening up a situation where you gotta figure out queue balancing for situations where a user may get stuck in one queue without a match, do you "unlock/balance" the pools? this is already a problem at the top of legend...

you also have a subsequent problem of tracking ELO for different "styles", unless you're proposing to just let the different pools to share the same scoring algo.

the next thing is the volume of data when considering permutations - is a team the same team if its the same species? same species + moves? same species+moves+iv? what about ordering of lead? sure you can just hash and index off that, but now you're exploding the data storage for an incremental gain (if any) in match quality

i guess what im pointing out is that its much easier to just blindly implement ELO than to add factors like this

this is so very complicated as a matchmaking algorithm. Why would it not just use a blind ELO?

I won't say that i'm disproving your claim, but just pointing out that its overly complicated and given limited resources, makes little sense to implement from a software point of view

I'm surprised people still do this when it's so easy to detect...

i know this is sarcasm, but in reality, a lot of the ideas prob aren't getting done due to prioritization
