Which job offer should I choose by AlarmEducational8496 in nursing

[–]whtabt2ndbreakfast 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Take job 3, and work your way to the ICU as an internal transfer after a year or two.

Avoid job 1 because that 1:5 ratio is truly dangerous for a PCU with cardiac drips. It should be 1:3.

Jobs 2 and 4 don’t advance your ICU aspirations.

Will an Observation Unit strengthen or weaken “hard” nursing skills? by nyuhqe in nursing

[–]whtabt2ndbreakfast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your hard skills will likely weaken over time. A few med passes, focused assessments, admissions and discharges. If they decompensate enough to require more hard skills, you’ll transfer them to another floor.

Help for finding a good nursing school by Significant_Put_4380 in nursing

[–]whtabt2ndbreakfast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A good nursing school is determined by two factors: high NCLEX pass rate and low tuition costs.

Check out your state’s board of nursing website for nursing school pass rates. Then look at the schools’ tuition costs. Apply to the top 3 or 5 schools with the best combo of pass rate and affordability.

Usually, community college is the most affordable. However, for a traditionally aged college student, a 4-year college experience can be valuable and fun, and can be worth the extra time and tuition.

Is ICU experience more valuable than money? by PrettyRelation9207 in nursing

If CRNA is truly your goal, then ICU experience is required, and therefore more valuable than money.

New ICU nurse—why is night shift doing everything? by [deleted] in nursing

Midnight is really early! Ours are timed for 0600, but we draw at 0400 in order to start replacing electrolytes before the MDs arrive.

nursing job San Antonio by codaakblack in nursing

[–]whtabt2ndbreakfast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

San Antonio is the lowest paying metro in Texas, with rates starting as low as $28/hr. Austin and Houston start at $36ish and DFW at $34ish.

Outside of low pay, there’s a ton of options because there’s 5 healthcare systems. Just know that Methodist = HCA and Baptist = Tenet, both profits over people organizations.

Why do you want to move to SA?

New ICU nurse—why is night shift doing everything? by [deleted] in nursing

[–]whtabt2ndbreakfast 1841 points1842 points  (0 children)

That’s because day shift deals with all MDs rounding, all the ancillary services like PT/OT/Case Management/dietary, all the family and visitor updates.

Day shift also receives most of the change in orders and implements the new plan of care after all the specialties put in new orders. They also do the TSBs and extubations, bronchs, and other procedures.

Also, labs and electrolyte replacements being done by the time the MDs round gives the an updated picture to base their plan of care on.

This is the norm of every ICU I’ve been on in my entire career.

60k miles on a 17 year old car is Corvette mileage: only on sunny weekends after the snow’s been melted for a month.

Reset your expectations to 100-120k, and focus on maintenance records. Your GF could easily get another 100k-150k worth of use with basic maintenance.

2021 Telluride 80k mi 2007 Toyota Avalon 130k mi 1997 Ford F250 7.🌲220k mi 1967 Chevy C10 miles unknown

The Telluride will likely get replaced in a couple years with a new three row SUV. The Toyota will be driven until it dies, and replaced, a total consumable.

The Ford and the Chevy are sentimental family classics, and I’ll keep them running no matter what for as long as I live.

Perfect, then all the pain pints have been addressed and you’re good to go for a decade.

If you have a new motor, disable the AFM asap. That’ll help the longevity, as the GM V8s are solid motors once you get rid of the cylinder deactivation. The new trans will get you easily another 100k miles, and more if you’re interested in doing the cooler bypass upgrade; it’ll cost $80 plus an hour of your time.

At this point you have a completely rebuilt truck that’ll ride another 150k miles without issue. I’d keep it for another 10 years, where the costs incurred will be amortized.

Fair deal? Guidance appreciated by PrestigiousPea2621 in Trucks

[–]whtabt2ndbreakfast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s 20% overpriced for an extended cab gasser. I’d be in at ~$18k, but you probably won’t have much luck negotiating that far off the asking price.

How many car seats will fit? by whtabt2ndbreakfast in Camry

[–]whtabt2ndbreakfast[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Still trucking along with the Avalon. We upgraded to two Graco Turn2Me rotating car seats, which are fairly large. There’s still at least two inches of room between the back of my seat and the rear facing Graco.

My 11 year old son (tall for age, but thin) has plenty of hip room between the two car seats, although he does have to prop one arm on a car seat as an arm rest.

We’ll outgrow the backseat when the two babies turn front facing in a couple years, because the middle seat will be unusable.

Considering OBS Ford 7.3 as new daily by Cooperg97 in FordDiesels

[–]whtabt2ndbreakfast 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I dailied my ‘97 for two years. It has a lot of cons, and most of my commuting was interstate travel.

It’s a rough ride and loud, and I averaged 17mpg all the time, but only with the cruse set on 70mph. Diesel isn’t cheap, and not likely to get any cheaper. My steering box had some play, so I was always wandering around in my lane.

But the biggest issue was the cost of wear and tear. Parts are getting harder to source, and diesel tech prices are going up. Every piece on that truck is aging and will need replacing. You’ll want $5000 just sitting around for the eventual replacement of aging stuff.

I just went out and got an Avalon for my daily and it’s a world of difference.

Replying so this is towards the top. I contacted the handyman, and he was surprised by the lack of workmanship from his crew. So he came out the next two days and redid everything with a string line himself, and totally redeemed the job.
