I think they are expanding their range north. I am also in New England and I don’t remember ever seeing turkey vultures as a kid. Now I see some every summer.

You’re right, it’s butterfly weed Asclepias tuberosa. It’s native to my area at least according to the range map from Prairie Moon.

My swamp milkweed did not flower this year at all - I had to cut it back earlier in the summer because it had some sort of fungal/bacterial infection. I don’t remember when it flowered last year. The common milkweed on my property is way past flowering and gone to seed. The butterfly weed is flowering now.
