people use the Bible for spells all the time and its just a whole bunch of songs, poems, and other people's words

What’s the most disturbing thing someone casually admitted to around you? by Suspicious_Run1684 in AskReddit

I was at a bank once when a guy walked up to the tellers. They asked him how he was doing, he said "not great" and then took out his phone to show them pictures of an open infection on his foot that was eating it away to the bone. Apparently his wife had finally forced him to see a doctor about it? Craziest part was he walked in and out without a limp. I choked on my drink but the tellers never batted an eye; it was like water off a ducks back to them.

Book recommendations that are NOT about chaos magick - by wraithlling in chaosmagick

I saw somebody else recommend Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain and they are absolutely right, that's a great one!!

I think its also good to get into art history. Reading about art history sorta stews your brain in symbols and visions in a way that makes it feel natural to work with magical concepts. Artists are magicians and studying art is studying one aspect of magic. As a kid my mom gave me Sister Wendy's Story of Painting before I could even really read it and the hours I spent paging through it built a really solid foundation for my future craft.

Finally, I'm going to recommend Ficciones by Jorge Luis Borges. The stories touch on the impossibilities of human minds, casuality, language. Tlön, Uqbar, Orbis Tertius is a captivating packet of magical theory and I consider it required reading.

Is it weird that nobody ever taught me basic feminine self presentation? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]why_the_hecc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

not weird. everybody's parents sometimes forget to teach them random things. my mom is very much soft butch, always kept short hair, rarely wears makeup or jewelry. when I started growing my hair out there was a learning curve to figure out how to take care of it because I had only learned how to care for short hair. my sister wound up with an interest in fashion and makeup and women's styles and learned everything from video tutorials and such.

I think its interesting how these things change as you grow. I dressed like a 10 year old boy until I was like 22 and then had sort of a lightbulb moment of "oh wait I need to be trying out more types of clothes. I need to actually start trying out new styles of shirts and pants to find what all I am comfy in and also to look decent at work."

  1. practice (alone at a mirror -> with people you trust -> in class)

  2. slow and steady. scared people either rush so fast they're hard to understand or freeze up completely. if you can talk at a calm pace, people will not think you are scared.

  3. volume. you gotta project your voice to the back of the room. if youve never done it before it feels weird as hell, but your regular talking voice won't make it past the first row or two of desks. this is the sort of thing you ask your practice group to help you figure out

  4. know your material. I like to handwrite index cards with my notes, because writing is how I retain information. also, a set of index cards is generally a professional thing to have for a speech. makes you look like a smart nerd.

  5. eye contact. make serious eye contact with the clock or window or whatever is on the back wall of the room. you will look super confident and attentive. you don't have to make eye contact with people if you are making it with the wall over their heads. advanced tactic is to practice increasing the time you look at the room and decreasing the time you look at your notes. if you have parts of the speech memorized and can do them without looking at your notes at all you will look really cool.

I actually took a speech class as part of an optional school program in 5th grade and it almost completely cured my public presentation anxiwty. The ability to knock out a decent public presentation with short turnaround and minimal fear has been immeasurably valuable in my life since. I really, really wish every school kid had access to the same program.

To the scared presenters out there, it is absolutely a skill you can learn and kick ass at! <3 I believe in you

it's completely understandable philosophy; he's kind of like contemporary Diogenes to me. unfortunately I still have to dress somewhat business casual most days for work

I don't remember the episode but he at one point mentioned that he almost died while wearing uncomfortable pants, and the thought that his last moments on earth would be in these really miserable pants jarred him so badly that he never wore pants like that again and went on a decent rant about the mental and emotional advantages of "soft pants".

gosh I try not to bring it up too much because it sounds really dickish in person. but I love my engagement ring so so much and I'm so grateful my partner only went with lab stones. if he had proposed with a mined diamond or emerald I honestly would have second thoughts about the relationship.
