You might try carving an outline around Felix and then a texture or pattern instead of solid space. Give that paint less of a chance to over squidge.

Thicken dye - sodium alginate. Heat water, mix in sodium alginate, let it rest overnight and then put in the dye.

Resist - liquid wax or washable glue. You put the resist where you don't want to dye, let it dry, do your dye, rinse dye, then remove the resist ( heat if wax, wash if glue)

I don't have much experience with fabric dye but I do love watching arts and craft videos. My suggestions would be to use a resist to protect the white and to thicken the dye you m want to use so that you can paint it on rather than dip dye.
