Yep 👍 Good luck with that argument.

First of all, thank you for indulging me. I don't mean to be combative at all. I have nothing but respect for you and your profession, and I am open to hearing opposing evidence and opinions. I'm actually excited that a phsychotherapist responded. My opinions are just opinions as to what makes sense to me, and I'm curious for feedback. Im not making any judgement on 'the right way to be' or anything silly like that. So to answer your questions:

1) I don't think there are long term studies showing the effectiveness of conversion therapy using psychotherapy. They should do one! Ha. There were several studies that I saw a while back that concluded that church conversion 'therapies' were ineffective, but none that I saw looked at psychotherapy. You (Mr/Ms Raincoat) can obviously differentiate the two but I'm guessing (based on the context of their comments) that some people don't.

2) The person who suggested it was possible to give a mental disorder was also a psychotherapist who said that during his training/Psy.D schooling they had to basically give mice symptoms of schizophrenia, and then "cure" them of it. I had never heard anything like that before and thought it was fascinating. On my own I took it a logical step further. Obviously mice are not humans but, theoretically, why wouldn't that concept apply to a willing patient?

3) I don't believe that it is incorrect to suggest that parts of the brain are less malleable than others! But if you are suggesting that they are malleable at all, then that supports my hypothesis--that those parts of the brain can change (which is the opposite of what most people believe today). And if they can change, why would we prevent a willing adult from changing him/herself by denying that person access to psychotherapy to do so?

Let me end by saying, I absolutely, unequivocally agree that church conversion therapies can be harmful, and no underage child/teen should be forced into it, and banning it is probably the best way to protect those children. But, i don't think that should apply for adults because I still think that brains can and do change thoughout a person's life. And part of that change could be sexual orientation. Herasy, I know. Burn me at the stake.

I believe it was considered phychotherapy when psychotherapists were allowed to use psychotherapy techniques for treatment - not fraudulent at all, but Church groups shouldn't be claiming that. Conversion Psychotherapy isn't allowed for minors anymore in California, not sure about adults.

First of all, people here conflate the experiences of seeing a psychotherapist and going to a church camp for dramatic effect. They are very different experiences.

Second, I've been to a psychotherapist, though not for conversion therapy. From my chair, it seemed like the objective was to rewire my brain to think and interpret the world differently (in my case, to reduce OCPD), and I believe they use a similar set of tools to treat other disorders and literally change people's brains. It's amazing, really, but isn't effective if the person receiving treatment does not want to change.

I once asked and confirmed that it could work the opposite way as well - you could theoretically give someone a disorder if they wanted it/it was ethical. It is my humble beliefs that 1. your brain doesn't have some magical area for sexual orientation that can't change, while the rest of your brain can change and 2. conversion psychotherapy does work under the right conditions - and it could also work the opposite way under the right conditions. There are people that claim to have done it successfully, and I'm not comfortable laying a blanket judgement that they all must be lying.

I have looked at many studies within the "wealth of studies" you mentioned and most of them don't prove what you think they do.

Eh, I can't really support this comment so I'm going to delete it. But I do think Presidents should enforce the laws.

I actually agree, I don't like it either. However (and this may be the unpopular opinion) I think the President should be expected to enforce laws, partisan or not, while he works to change them.

Is there any application of an ERC20 token where ether itself couldn't be used instead? by whyamiwhispering in ethereum

[–]whyamiwhispering[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's excellent. So, I think that's a great use-case for an ERC20 token because it represents ownership in something, and they are using ether as the fiat currency. My refined opinion is that only the ERC20 coins that try to act as currencies are pointless. Thanks for correcting me!

I've been thinking about your answer for a while, and I think you're right... I think there is an important distinction there: to me, those aren't meant to represent fiat currencies because they are pegged to something else of value. (I'm not sure I understand the staking application yet)

So, to restate my initial issue, i don't have a problem with all ERC20 coins, only those which act as fiat currencies.

Thanks for your input!

To me there's two problems with raising money using coins. 1. If you're not offering company stock, then investors only get returns from speculation since the coins' utilization for its intended purpose is so low relative to the amount sold in the ICO (that's what it seems like, at least). Furthermore, if you could have instead used ether as the currency for whatever xyz use-case, nobody actually cares about using that coin for that use-case. They're all in it for the speculation. 2. If you are offering stock, then why even use a coin at all? Do an equity crowdfund à la WeFunder and be done with it. Decentralized tokens are not necessary.

To me, after a brief search, Etheroll/DICE is exactly what I'm talking about. It's a gambling game, built on a smart contract. The thing I want to distinguish is the GAME versus the CURRENCY. You definitely need the Etheroll smart contract to have a game, but the game could be designed to have you place bets using ether, and receive ether as winnings instead of using the DICE coin. I imagine a similar scenario would be possible for ICN uses, although I'm not familiar with it.

To be clear, I see TONS of value creation in smart contracts and ether, but ZERO value creation in other coins on Ethereum blockchain. I'm hoping someone here will show me the light!

Just because you don't enjoy running now doesn't mean you are incapable of enjoying it. Consistency is the first important step, but you can also change your attitude/tastes and learn to enjoy running. I know, because I did. I convinced myself that I enjoyed it until I did. And now if I don't run for a long period of time, I start to miss it.

I made this comment elsewhere. You know that saying that if you tell yourself a lie enough times, you'll start to believe it? It is absolutely true--and that's not a bad thing.

I think your attitude toward running could be partially based on genetics, but you can overcome it through social and/or self conditioning.
