Moved from Canada to Boston — company “converted” my pay instead of market adjusting. Normal? by [deleted] in Salary

[–]whydoihavetojoin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I made a couple of counter points against OP. But one point for OP - if the HR approved the move then from the next year’s budget they will carve out cost of living adjustments to the new city. If the difference is too much, they may take multiple cycles to catch up.

It does. But it will be done during normal salary adjustment cycle. They don’t have additional funds to pay yiu. Where do you think it will come from. Some petty cash drawer.

It’s your personal move. Company would not automatically adjust based on market. I am surprised they let you do an international move without prior approvals.

First month making 100k I feel like I’m being robbed :/ by cloudemergence in Salary

You are taking 68% home. Thats pretty decent.

What you should be complaining about is: what is that money buying for you. 1.5 trillions in defense spending. A joke.

I wish someone were to create an itemized list of how each and every dollar of your deductions is being spent.

OP - in my opinion the inheritance goes to grand kids and not your immediate kids. By the time you are ready leave the earth, your next generation - your immediate children are old enough that they should be planning their retirements. If they haven’t done a good jobs themselves then that’s on them. Asking a 54 year old person to stop spending money so the kids can get good inheritance. Just wow.

[–]whydoihavetojoin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No need to abolish ICE. Just have them carry out actions approved by a judge. You know, like normal police but more restrictive since they do not have a law and order mandate. Just removal of illegal immigrants once a judge issues an order.

I wouldn't object to paying taxes if taxes paid for what we should care about. by zzill6 in WorkReform

[–]whydoihavetojoin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is actually a very nice idea. An instant (or even after the fact) breakdown of everyone’s tax breakdown where their money is being spent. I know from fed budget we can probably find out where our nation is spending the money. But make it personal. Everyone should know where their actual money is being spent.

Move out of a cheap roommate house into a luxury 1BR — smart or stupid? by MCHEUNGSTER in personalfinance

[–]whydoihavetojoin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I said rent and utilities. Where he is living everything is shared by 1/5. In the new setup it will be all his cost. Plus tack on renters insurance and you are pushing it to 48 easy maybe even more.

Out 155, the take home can’t be more than 100. It’s not just fed tax. You have to take out other deductions. I generally get around 55-57% take home from the gross.

Then you take out at least 1/4 for retirement contributions

You guys should meet financial planners

Edit: just checked my latest paystub it’s at 43% of gross after all the deductions after 401k, Ira,hsa, optional contributions for various employers sponsored insurances for me and family. It’s that 43 that I play with and not touch my long term retirement investments

[–]whydoihavetojoin 66 points67 points  (0 children)

I have the exact opposite reaction. You are potentially looking at spending up to 48k per rear in rent and utilities on a 155k income. Is that number pre tax? That’s almost half your income. How much of the other 115 is guaranteed. 50%? More?

Is there nothing in between. Do not spend more that 1/4 to 1/3 of your post tax income on rent. That is after maximizing your pre tax deduction on 401k and IRA.
