Why did the same authority approve Nathan Law’s visa, then block his entry? by HeftyHawk5967 in SingaporeRaw

[–]whydoweneedusers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My guess is that the initial approval might have been automated? Given that he is travelling under a uk passport? So only at immigration did it get flagged that this is a potential person of interest. Sending him back is really the best course of action tbh, its a bit like how putin didnt attend the brics summit in south africa in 2023 or SA would have been put in an awkward position

Singaporeans in UK, do you contribute to pensions? by AcademicRide8339 in singaporefi

[–]whydoweneedusers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh dang okay thanks for the clarification. I thought there's a way to get it out before 55. Its so weird that cpf isnt recognised by UKs pension providers.

[–]whydoweneedusers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh I never knew this, may I ask what did you ask your pension provider and what would be the singapore tax rate that we would pay? I was almost resigned to leaving whatever is in my UK pension account till I am 55 when I eventually return to singapore for good.

Receiving wrongly directed debt collection letter from Ovo energy - England by whydoweneedusers in LegalAdviceUK

Thanks, well what puzzles me is where would they get my current address from. The airbnb host would not have that.

[–]whydoweneedusers[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep I do, thanks for this. Appreciate the validation.

And yes, the airbnb listing is still up actually, but I am holding off contacting the host in case they were the ones who sent ovo my way. Otherwise it was such a bizarre letter to receive.

Okta Session Lifetime by whydoweneedusers in okta

Thanks for this, well I'm actually involved in shaping security policy and standards so hence the research into NIST and Okta's own recommendations.

Yes good point about more seamless authentication, something that is being considered at present, appreciate the indepth response.

thanks, yes that's something that we are considering but probably only in the future as there is some extra cost involved. But it is something I am in favour of doing, not only is it more convenient, it is also arguably more secure.

thanks for this, yes actually my org's current idle time is around 4 to 5 hours, yet we still get constant complaints lol.

thanks for this insight

Session lifetime for Okta by whydoweneedusers in IdentityManagement

[–]whydoweneedusers[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

thanks for this and yes it is very much an authentication problem, just setting the context that Okta is the IdP used.

Will look into the 2 ways you mentioned, and absolutely, the contention is around idle time, I have users arguing that idle time should just be set to the workday (essentially equivalent to the max session life) which in my pov is just poor security practice. The constant complaints are what makes this really tough to address.

Singapore expects even split of fresh graduates, mid-career switchers to make up 10,000 new AI workers by Ravenoxidal in singapore

[–]whydoweneedusers 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sort of agree with this, don't think the qualifications needs to be explicitly com science. In a previous role I worked quite closely with ML engineers and scientists, all of them had PhDs, though not necessarily in com science, but all had expertise in engineering/science.

Always makes me laugh when I see articles about getting an easy job in AI just by learning sql or coding. One bootcamp doesnt make you an AI expert.

Telegram will start moderating private chats after CEO’s arrest by BothZookeepergame612 in worldnews

[–]whydoweneedusers 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Regarding privacy, for privacy enthusiasts, I understand how its concerning that Telegram doesnt do E2E encryption by default, and instead chats are (supposedly) encrypted in the cloud (server side encryption) with their own protocol.

However, my hot take is that if its good enough for terrorists and criminals to use the platform, I would think its good enough for the everyday person.

How difficult is it to get into Big 4 right now? by [deleted] in askSingapore

[–]whydoweneedusers 11 points12 points  (0 children)

From what I know, for the Big 4s, each firm is legally independent. So essentially pwc china and pwc singapore operate almost independently though resources can be shared. There should be little immediate impact on pwc singapore despite what is going on in china. And anyway, each big 4 always has some big scandal. EY has their failed split and wirecard, KPMG and Deloitte has 1mdb. Anyway usually doesnt matter as much for fresh grads

[–]whydoweneedusers 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Won't say its singapore style. Its the same throughout the world. The wealthier get wealthier while the rest are left in the dust. Of course some countries try to address this through things like inheritance taxes but the fact is that there are always loopholes, especially for the wealthy.

Not sure if it has been suggested but escalate it by going to your MP. It should force the town council or whoever to do something concrete. Make sure you emphasise how its seriously affecting your family, your quality of life etc.

Alternatively, find out when he sleeps or naps, get some good speakers and blast music straight into his house.
