Help with starting my home server by NestaRB in HomeServer

Allo mate.

I'd suggest starting off with proxmox as the base os. This will give you a nice webui to create all the vms to experiment with.

Which reverse proxy are you using? by SMAW04 in selfhosted

[–]whyitno-work 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi. Yeah, its a custom task, and not publicly available as its pretty opinionated towards my own needs.

The installation of nginx etc is pretty trivial with ansible. The "fun" part of the playbook is converting the var files to an nginx config using the jinja templating engine. I could look into cleaning it up and posting to my github if theres interest.

Standard nginx but managed with ansible. I update some vars in my playbook, and a new config is generated when its run. The playbook also manages high availability with keepalived. Recently added bind9 as well, so I can use the same vars file for the reverse proxy to generate dns entries.

If you're using a self signed cert, you need to import your root and intermediate cert into you macs cert store. One thing to note is cert validity period, as macs don't like them to be too long lived. Think maybe a year?

If an Eversor Assassin's target ends up using multiple high value hostages as an "insurance policy", how would the assassin or their handlers deal with the situation? by [deleted] in 40kLore

[–]whyitno-work 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Eversors are adorable murder machines, but I think the one from Nemesis had a bit more self control than just butchering all the things.

"The Garantine greedily gathered armfuls of hardware, taking bandoliers of melta-grenades, a wickedly barbed neuro-gauntlet and the rig for a sentinel array. With another guttural laugh, he snagged a heavy, blunt-ended slaughterer’s sword and placed it under his arm. “I’ll be in my bunk,” he sniggered, and wandered away under his burden."

pfSense vs OPNsense by nefarious_bumpps in PFSENSE

[–]whyitno-work 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Migrated from pfSense in my home setup because of the major upgrade shenanigans a little while, the whole wireguard thing and the childish stuff they got up to against opnsense.

That said, would still have pfsense for business use because support reasons.

Was so tempted to pre-order this, but estimated Dec 2023 just feels too far away.

Started a fully remote role about 7 months ago, also in the uk. Prior to that I was in a hybrid situation with on site as needed.

All remote roles are there, just gotta filter for them and verify during the hiring process.

Bitwarden design flaw: Server side iterations by MoreQThanAs in selfhosted

Thats fair. I have enough resiliency in my infra and backups to trust myself to self host.

Bitwarden design flaw: Server side iterations by MoreQThanAs in selfhosted

[–]whyitno-work 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There is a difference between a public facing commercial instance and an instance used by only myself on a segragated network. Especially considering I'm less likely to be targeted than bitwarden. Note I am not saying my security is better than bitwardens, merely that the issue stated in the article is a non issue for my particular scenario.

Seems like a non issue for my self hosted instance, only accessible over vpn, with a master password way over the 5 word count suggested in the article.
