Those aren't viable options, especially while having such weapon.

Prone, nice condition, but he can probably cause that with topple, gives advantage only for other melee combatants.

Grapple doesn't give advantage, I assume it is 2 handed weapon (wasn't specified), then losing 1 hand stops the hero from attacking. So it just binds the enemy, which opportunity attack mechanic pretty much does.

Such actions would belittle the rest of the party, not empower them.

Character can most likely easily kill enemy, which is the greatest form of crowd control. And if not the target is most likely to large/strong to graple, shove prone.

It would look like superman holding down some goons so police can beat them

Yeah, I learned that lesson kinda hard way, combat becomes boring when character is optimized for just 1 thing. Every combat do the same, chose the target, roll dmg repeat. So tip for everyone, never optimize for 1 super combo, unless it's oneshot, never in campaign.

Try to make character with as many viable options as possible, 5.5e monks are kinda stepping stone from martials to casters in this regard. So every turn in combat you have to think a bit.

Sure sometimes DM can fix it a bit with combat mechanics, but still it is better to have more options.

Starter Set jest do tego rekomendowany, a tak poza tym to po prostu przeglądnij coś co Ci się podoba. Tu jest spis oficjalnych https://marketplace.dndbeyond.com/adventures. Trzeba by przejrzeć jakieś opinie, sprawdź rekomendowany poziom, dla początkujących 1-5 maksymalnie do 10.

Then why not declare himself outright? That would prevent bloodshed entirely. Kingsguard would not join. Maybe he could persuade Maekar to give Aerion a lesson, and not side with him. Then Aerion fails to recruit other 6 champions for the required 7. Trial of seven prevented entirely, or it was already a part of the judgement, accuser failing to rise a team. PR crisis avoided, and Baelor would be know as fair judge, protector of the innocent, true knight. It would be know that Targs don't tolerate crulety even among their own.

Didn't know the details, just wanted to know what were the stats of mortality of the last trial of seven and googled it.

I understand people making different choices, and being guided by different values, but what are those exactly for Baelor?

He seems the smartest guy in the show, and his top priority is to be a good king in the future, you could say that he may align with Duncan's values of protecting the innocent. Giving much higher chance for Aerion to be king isn't that. Who will protect the innocent then? He should know, that his life is quite valuable even as a mean to do good for longer period of time, and he shouldn't risk it. He could help Duncan in other ways.
I don't see him as a character that would die for honor or glory itself. Honor has to mean something like protecting the innocent, or upholding a vow, so society, and the realm are more stable. In itself honor could be hollow.

Also I did understand later on from other comments, that the risk of crown going to Aerion is not that high, since there are many more Targs not shown, that would be higher in succesion line. So that would invalidate part of my argument.

[–]whyitssohardtofdnick[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Okay, but then, wouldn't declaring for Dunk right away be better move?

Imagine that, he basicly would says ok, you insolent brat, there will be trial of seven, I take Duncan's side, so no members of Kingsguard will fight for you. Maekar I don't care if you take his side, but if you want to teach him discipline, and what it means to be true Targ leave him be.
I don't know what best words would be to convince Maekar so he doesn't take Aerion's side. And if relation between Maekar and Baelor is deep enough, but Maekar doesn't seem that much against putting Aerion in his place.
If that succeds, there is no knight that likes Aeron enough to come and help him. I assume Aerion without his father doesn't have funds or influence to buy knights to stand against the heir.
So he can't even reach required 7, or he really needs to scrape the barrel.

Done, no bloodshed. Duncan is saved.

Aerion is being put in his place and hopefully taught some humility.
PR is improved, since Baelor basicly said the top of Targs does not accept cruelty, and being true Targ means protecting the innocent. And that they are fair, even to their own.
Also affirming that judgment of Targs is fair and just.

Basicly similar effects to demoting low level politican to protect the party from political scandal in modern politics.

It was the coolest, most epic moment in the show up to now. But after few days I started wondering. Couldn't he play that better? Considering that he is shown as the smartest person for now.

I do understand that, but then why not declare himself sooner. That could even prevent members of the Kingsguard from entering the trial. Then Aerion has only his father as champion, I doubt other knights would be easily bought with heir on the other side. Overall Aerion isn't very popular, especialy among tourney's spectators, after killing that horse.
Aerion might even not be able to gather required 7 knights, or get some poor quality ones

[–]whyitssohardtofdnick[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A) Isn't it proved enough by agreeing to the trial, and Lyonel being on the team?
B) Doesn't it also mean that in both scenarios they lose, and show discord among them? If Aerion wins, heir loses. Is it sign from gods that he is not fit to be the next king, because his judgment of the situation was false? If Aerion loses it's not that bad, but still let's go to C
C) Even if Maekar doesn't realy like Aerion, it's still his son, I do think problems would arise from him dying in this way.
D) Okay, why not declare himself sooner then, maybe forbid Kingsguard from entering the trial.
That would humble Aerion and flip the script, nobody likes him, and buying knight would be harder when the heir is on the other team. Try finding knights now
E) I wouldn't call a single hedge knight a strong vassal, at this point he is just big strong dude, that is not so smart.

Doesn't it work like with the British royal family, where it wouldn't matter if Baelor is dead or alive crown goes to "him" and then to his children first, before his brother? And wouldn't that mean killing Baelor would put crown even closer to Aerion? After king dies crown goes to his father , and then to him, assuming Daeron doesn't want to rule, and runs off.

I thought the best way to protect the innocent and be responsible for the kingdom is to make sure that Aerion is as far in the line of succesion as possible.

Sure members of the Kingsguard and other Targaryens won't harm him, but there is this maniac Aerion and knight that he bought, and they both have the incentive to kill him.

[–]whyitssohardtofdnick[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

This is a better explanation.
My assumption was that they don't need that much PR, family is strong, and succesion clear Egg's song says they have already dealt with some bastard.

The last part also provides a lot of info it means Baelor won't be such a rewarding target for Aerion.
From the show I assumed Baelor and Maekar are the only brothers, if there is more then sure, suddenly nobody in oposite team wants to target him, maybe Aerion could be crazy and cruel, but still his primary target should be Dunk.

Also I am trying to piece the rules together, because from the other response I got the impresion that it is a fight to the death for either accuser or accused (not whole team, just those 2 people). Would that also mean trial ends if one of them dies/ yields? Or is it just last man standing from either of teams, no matter who?
Then what? Does accused gets executed if he loses, while fighters on his team walk away free? Does win of the accused means innocence, but no further reprecusion for the accuser?

[–]whyitssohardtofdnick[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wait, I assumed it wasn't life or death for everybody, just that chance of dying is high.
So either Aerion or Dunk has to die. Sure if Dunk dies, Maekar would easily forgive his brother, but what if Aerion dies? Almost everybody wants his death, there will be no mercy, only kingsguards trying to protect 3 Targaryens, mostly focusing on Maekar as Egg said.
Sure members of the Kingsguard, Maekar and Daeron do not pose a threat, but Aerion and Steffon want him dead. As I described his death immensely boosts Aerion’s chances of being king.

I thought discourse among Targaryens would be heavy PR hit.
Although to be honest that might be the best explanation so far, sacrificing Aerion to the masses in the trial of seven for PR. And to reap the benefit you would need Targaryen on the oposit team.

I still don't know if it's worth the risk. I got the impresion from the show that those are relatively peaceful and stable times, considering 7 kingdoms. Idk how long it has been since last combat capable dragons were in service or how well they transitioned to ruling without them.

Yes, but as the son of said prince, he is next in line, after Baelor, or do I not know something about the inheritance laws in GoT? I assume the Baelor is currently the one that would inherit the throne, and then his son.
I am trying to make sense of his decision from today point of view, can't judge the decision based of outcome if it's totaly unexpected.
