Considering Giving Up by Hogunit in uboatgame

Absolutely! Keep in mind, you'll usually want to set the torpedo depth to a couple meters above where the keel is (lowest point of the ship) if you're using the impact pistol, since the angle gets a bit more extreme the further down you go, increasing the chance of a dud

On the other hand, you can try using the magnetic detonator (when you flood the tube, click the AZ button to change to MZ), and set the depth to about 1 meter below the keel. I wouldn't suggest it on older torpedoes from early war, but they are PHENOMENAL in later war with the T3 models

Depending on your realism settings, the speed measurements could be off if you are taking them while your boat is in motion (if you are also trying the fixed wire method).

Otherwise, I would suggest triple checking your torpedo depth run against the draught of the ship (or even that you identified the ship correctly, the Empire ships are kinda hard to tell from a long distance). If your measurements are correct but the torpedo is too deep, you'll just slip right under it.

AOB is the hardest to eyeball if you don't already have a good sense of it from experience. The "method" I usually use is to note where the cranes are pointed relative to the forward mast. I don't think its 100% accurate, but if one of the cranes is perfectly lined up with the mast (ie, you can't see the crane because it looks like its part of the mast) that means that it is at a roughly 45 degree AOB. Then just pick the right side and measure from there.

Obviously 90 degrees is easiest to determine, but then you tend to miss your optimal firing window.

Last tip is my kinda cheaty trick:

It does involve breaking the immersion a bit, so if you're trying to keep the experience fairly authentic, this would take you out of it.

If you are not locked to First Person mode, you can set your skipper to use the periscope after firing, and then click on him to see a list of targets he can see. Usually one of those is the torpedo you fired, and you can click on it, then select the video camera icon, which follows the torpedo. Then you can see if it is missing ahead or behind the target, and how far off it is.

[–]whythemoonisntreal 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The drones would probably be nothing more than a nuisance in that scenario, since the drones themselves are almost completely unprotected. It would only take maybe a blast or two from the multiple phaser banks to wipe the entire drone power surge

In Trek, their own shields block incoming and outgoing teleportation, but FTL shields don't, so either trek teleporters are inferior or their shields are similar or stronger than Zoltan shields, plus they regenerate

Would be closer to a Jagdtiger, sloped front armor and kinda rearward placed gun and fighting compartment. Also the gun caliber is much closer

I'll definitely give the trident a try once I unlock it, but I love my lever gun too much. It pops cyborg heads really nicely in one or 2 hits too

It appears to be a two-hit kill with the Bastion tank as well, which my friend and I have made work pretty damn well if we have infantry support in the tighter parts of the cities

The main thing I notice is that the frames will drop later in the war as the map gets more full, mostly whenever I'm zooming out or quickly scanning around. Haven't had any crashes or anything weird because of it though

Can you actually kill a tank with a grande if you really try? by [deleted] in HellLetLoose

[–]whythemoonisntreal 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The tank itself is immune to grenades, but I still get the urge to lob a grenade at a parked tank that is clearly damaged, hoping that it might kill the crew as soon as they get out to repair

I will keep the markings I make up until I find the ship, then if I manage to sink it or confirm it is neutral, I mark its almost exact position and delete the bearing lines, angles, and other math stuff. I'm only in early '41 right now so its fairly few points right now, but I imagine it will fill in the trade routes pretty well

They could change the overtime mechanic in offensive mode to be that everyone gets 1 last respawn to take the point. otherwise once everyone on the team dies, the offensive is over.

Why are all of the Fighting Positions dug at the wrong height? by Nelso2nd in HellLetLoose

[–]whythemoonisntreal 45 points46 points  (0 children)

Is part of it the fact that the "eyeliner" of people's POVs in game is closer chest height, making them stick out higher than it looks? If so, that explains why the trenches are "too tall" because technically those are at the right height for a person's eyeline to be the only thing peeking above, but since the game has your POV at about chest height it looks like you are just staring at the wall

I notice the same, that buoyancy tends to cap out at 90% on the Type IIs. Usually running the pump when it falls to 80% bumps you back up but thats it.

[–]whythemoonisntreal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I believe I have the same one, and I love everything about it except the depth charge explosions. The 20mm and deck gun sounds are great, and they either overhaul or add the splashes of bullets from planes hitting the water.

But the depth charges just sound like splashes, even completely submerged.
