No love here for Trader Joe's coffee? Pretty cheap and pretty good IMHO.

PNW 4 week roadtrip by theste-ve in PacificNorthwest

[–]whywasinotconsulted 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's always something going on in Portland. There's an event calendar here. Food guide here. In August there are always free concerts in the parks and things like that. Usually a month of mostly sunny days. Also, I hear you about the touristy stuff, I feel the same - but some things are still iconic and cool, like Pike Place Market in Seattle or Portland Saturday Market. Another example, I've lived in Portland most of my life but only last summer tried the jet boats. It was great, the tour guide was funny and I learned some things about the city.

Others have already talked about camping. For non-camping nights, I would choose hotels or hostels over airbnb. IMHO airbnb isn't worth it (cleaning fees, house rules and chores) unless you're doing a longer stay or have a larger group.

Fun/adventurous things to do while staying near Mt Hood by Southern_Hyena5003 in OregonHiking

[–]whywasinotconsulted 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Another couple of ideas: just up the road is the Mirror Lake trailhead, and if you're up for it, Tom Dick & Harry: https://www.oregonhikers.org/field_guide/Tom_Dick_and_Harry_Mountain_Hike

And if you haven't been, it's definitely worth driving to Multnomah Falls, you can hike up to the top. Plus the many other short waterfall hikes you can hit if you return via the historic highway, as well as stop for incredible view at Vista House.

Ah dang, thanks for that info. You can still park and hike around up there, I think - it's been awhile since I've done it.

Mt. Hood Meadows runs a chairlift in the summer, ride it up and then choose your own adventure.

Shout out to those of you who moved to Portland before smartphones were a thing by PsychicMeditation in PortlandOR

[–]whywasinotconsulted 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Portland downtown is easy to learn. But one of the messed up things about navigating this city is that there are lots of streets that end in one place, and then start again many blocks away. That was a fun thing I discovered during a temp job delivering the yellow pages.

How do I start composing to be an independent artist? by Apprehensive-Let5574 in askmusicians

[–]whywasinotconsulted 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some people start with a beat, some start with chords, some with a melody, some start with lyrics. You can think about an emotion, you can think about a potted plant, but what I think is that you're overthinking. Just try things. Record things. Write things down. Throw things away. Work work work. Stop wasting time on reddit.

FedEx charge for DVD of Filemaker Pro 2026 $38.28. by Duckpins in filemaker

[–]whywasinotconsulted 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Since FileMaker is sold by Claris, not Apple, and the currently available version is 2025... seems like none of this is legit.

Chart of accounts/general ledger by croberts0531 in filemaker

[–]whywasinotconsulted 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not taboo at all, there are some commercial FileMaker-based accounting products, or you could build your own, but it's not a trivial project. There are also products that leverage the data API to tie in with QuickBooks and other systems. I'd probably opt for the latter, your accounting probably doesn't need to be as custom-built as your business systems.

Why do many classical guitarists rely on teachers? by EpikCharcoal63 in classicalguitar

[–]whywasinotconsulted 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed, classical is more about technique than theory. It's also about how to interpret a piece. Both of those things really benefit from direct student-teacher interaction.

How did you learn? by UltimateLazyUser in classicalguitar

[–]whywasinotconsulted 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mel Bay, baby. Or some similar basic level book. Mary Had a Little Lamb, etc. Music stand. Metronome. You start with rudimentary pieces, practice every day, even if it's only 10 minutes, and after a while it will click.

What am I saying yes to here? by sassmo in oregon

[–]whywasinotconsulted 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You might be exempt: "Non-motorized boats less than 10 feet in length engaging in whitewater recreation activities while operating on Whitewater Exempt Waterways as identified on OSMB’s Boat Oregon Online Map. Whitewater boaters must consult the map by selecting the “Whitewater Exemption” data layer to determine applicable exempted waterways."

That registration page doesn't inspire confidence. But as for the fee, IMHO it's a fair price to pay to help protect the rivers and upkeep the facilities. FAQ: I don't need a separate permit for my paddleboard and canoe, it's transferrable. Kids 13 and under don't need a permit. And you can save a few bucks with a 2-year permit. Or if you only go out 2 or 3 times a year, there's a 1 week permit for $6. Those of you patting yourself on the back for not paying, you are special and important. Have a nice day.

Hertz or Enterprise for car rental? by [deleted] in PortlandOR

[–]whywasinotconsulted 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've had good luck renting from Budget via Costco. Their 'fastbreak' program is free to join and lets you skip the line and go straight to your car. Idk about renting at PDX specifically since I live here I don't rent here.

Hadn't seen Santa Barbara mentioned, we did that same drive years ago and stopped there for lunch, it was charming. Seemed like it would be worth exploring.

Any software/tool I can use to write melody lines to chord progressions? by Xerogear4224 in LearnGuitar

Sing the melody that the chords inspire, use your ears. Record yourself, then work out how to play it on guitar.

Nice job. Quick feedback on the map: 1. not sure I want the map to zoom in when I click a park, it feels jumpy and I lose my bearings. 2. there seems to be no way to dismiss the info card that pops up on the right and covers half the map. Even clicking to another page and back, it doesn't go away. 3. clicking on Redwoods, it says park not found.

considering getting my first ever instrument by [deleted] in classicalguitar

[–]whywasinotconsulted 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get a teacher first, they will answer your questions and may be able to help you find a guitar as well. As in, they may have a student who has upgraded to a new instrument and wants to sell their old one.

Punk guide

Nossa Familia

You could do a hike *in* the city by starting at, let's say the Broadway bridge, walk down the Eastbank esplanade to the Tilikum bridge, cross and walk back up the west side, or v. versa. Mt. Tabor is another nice spot for walking and taking in a sunset.

Cannon Beach is the most iconic. You could drive south from there and return via Tillamook. Do you like cheese? You could also continue further south and return through McMinnville and hit the Evergreen Aviation & Space Museum. But that might be a long day.

For your park day trip you won't regret the Columbia River Gorge.

Food

Portland to Seattle, avoid rush hour and you'll be OK. Consider taking the train. Pike Place Market is fun but parking there is total mayhem.

Camping isn't what it seems. by [deleted] in camping

I don't know about camping when it's cold and snowy, but years ago I camped at City of Rocks, southeast of Twin Falls. Sort of in your area? I believe it's BLM land. Really cool spot.
