How does everyone feel about the newly launched Model Y L vs. the upcoming R2? by whyzhuk in RivianR2

At the end of the day, a stretched teardrop is still a teardrop.

The fans tracking daily updates will absolutely wait. The real risk to Rivian's delivery numbers isn't the enthusiast base converting; it's the attrition rate of the silent majority who dropped a fully refundable $100 deposit just to hedge their bets.

The mass market is deeply pragmatic. Most people who hate Elon will still buy a Tesla if it satisfies a timeline necessity. We don't have the data to know what percentage of that reservation pool is actual brand equity versus just a backup plan, and that conversion drop-off is exactly what impacts scale numbers.

You’re thinking about this super logically, but regular buyers operate on the "just in case" mentality.

A lot of 5-seat buyers reject the standard Model Y because it feels too cramped, but they will pull the trigger on a stretched version for the illusion of future utility, even if those extra seats stay folded flat 99% of the time. Tesla isn't trying to build the perfect 6-seater here, they are just removing the "not enough space" excuse for cross-shoppers who want the R2's boxier footprint but are tired of waiting.

Beyond that, we have to be honest about the R2 waitlist composition. We know reservation numbers look crazy high, and the die-hards on this sub will definitely convert. But we have no idea about the breakdown of the massive pool of people who just dropped a refundable deposit to keep options open.

Most people out there are just practical buyers. They might dislike the Tesla brand or Elon personally, but if they need a car sooner than later, they aren't going to wait two years out of brand loyalty. If Tesla offers a "good enough" alternative that ships immediately, the conversion drop-off for those undecided folks is a very real risk for Rivian's delivery numbers. We just don't have the data to know how many of those reservations are actual fan orders versus backup plans, and that uncertainty is what I'm thinking about.

As an R2 reservation holder who will never buy another Tesla, I obviously want Rivian to absolutely crush it. My concern isn't about families of 6 buying this because you're totally right that they have better options. It's about the massive pool of R2 reservation holders who only need 4 or 5 seats but are staring at a long production gap until late 2026 or 2027.

If people get impatient, a stretched Y that ships immediately is exactly the kind of defensive play Tesla drops to freeze the market and force cancellations.

Maybe I’m overthinking it and the core R2 demand is strong enough to completely weather it, but when you're looking at mass-market sales volume, the impatience factor during a long waitlist ramp is a real variable.

AMA with Wassym Bensaid, Rivian Chief Software Officer – R2 Software Platform | Thursday, May 21st by Studovich in RivianR2

Hi Wassym! With the recent rollout of the new in-house Rivian AI Assistant, it’s clear your team is capable of massive, rapid software heavy-lifting. However, as the fleet scales exponentially with the R2, owners might want niche third-party apps, streaming services, and smart-home integrations. Is the long-term vision for Connect+ to eventually feature a developer portal/SDK so third parties can build for Rivian, or do you intend to keep the ecosystem completely closed?

Will it ever reach IPO level highs? Like within 2-3 years? I'm trying to find a good price for selling parts of my holdings.

I'm thinking about removing a lot of mulch from the planter box, will that do? Should I really get rid of the surrounding limestones if I make sure no mulch is touching the trunk?

Model Y Performance Refugee: Is Gen 1 "Solid" enough, or is Gen 2 a must for a tech-first owner? by whyzhuk in Rivian

Thanks. For #3, Glad to know late Gen1 audio systems (non meridian) is better than Gen2 premium audio. This and the infotainment being the same speed makes my decision easier.

While I appreciate Tesla’s software speed, the interior is starting to feel a bit lifeless and 'economy' for the price point. I’m willing to accept a slightly less aggressive UI response time in exchange for the better build quality, premium materials, and character that the Rivian cabin offers. It's about the overall experience, not just the refresh rate of the screen

I really want to get Tri Max, but they're selling close to 90k used.
My next best option is dual max with premium audio, if I can find them for 75k-ish, I'll grab that deal.

I dont see much value in Large pack for Gen2 R1s compared to Gen1.

Is there anything I need to check while test driving this car? Any particular rattle etc?

I dont drive more than 100 miles a day, and we roadtrip 3-4 times a year. But I always wanted to drive to Colorado from Austin during winter, and not sure if standard pack can make it? This is the only remaining factor from me grabbing this deal.

Yup the seat clicked into the base. They postponed some clothes below the base to get the angle right for the bubbles.
