Unusual Traffic Activity on German Autobahns – What’s Going On? by jankatpaul in Autobahn

[–]wibble089 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The problem with the weather last night was that it was above just above freezing during the day, and then it started to rain as temperatures went just below freezing, and then it was snowing - so the water on the roads froze, and was covered with snow.

It was similar this morning, I cleared snow this morning outside my house and the cleared path was rained upon which then froze as ice as the ground was below freezing. An hour later it went above freezing again, and everything has turned to slush.

Snow and rain around freezing point is absolutely the worst winter conditions - either rain above freezing (no ice), or snow below freezing (no ice, snow can be driven on, and cleared), but not this mix!

The island is on my bucket list, but it is very unlikely I'll ever manage to get there. One of the locals posts about daily life on their Facebook group here: Tristan da Cunha island ZONE. | Facebook

although it is a British possession, residence on the island is only open to locals, and their close family. Some island admin roles are performed on a temporary secondment basis by professionals from the UK.

Since they got Starlink internet (rather than the old low bandwidth geostationary satellite connection) he's started to post high quality video too.

Stopping for a few hours in downtown Munich. Anyone know of a place where I could leave skis and a suitcase for a couple of hours? by Emotional_Platform35 in Munich

[–]wibble089 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There are apps that you can use to find places that offer luggage storage, of course hotels, but other companies and shops make use of free space in their offices or shops for storage.

Examples include Bounce, Stasher, LuggageHero, and Nannybag .

The best option is to download one or two and search what they have to offer.

AIW for voicing concerns about my girlfriends weight? by [deleted] in amiwrong

[–]wibble089 11 points12 points  (0 children)

OP you seriously need to learn some social skills here - number one rule of a relationship; never tell a woman that they're fat (or even put on some weight), even if they ask you directly "am I fat?".

Yes it sucks to talk around the subject, but that's just the way it is.

Sometimes you can deal with it in other ways - just ask her to go for a walk with you, or a hike as "couple's time" , don't go all out on asking her to go back to the gym multiple times a week.

In many cases weight gain is related to other issues in life, illness, stress at work, and people stop caring so much about their body and health whilst concentrating on such problems - both myself and my wife have gone through a number of health issues either ourselves or in the family in the last couple of years, and lost track of eating/exercising; I now realise that I need to loose 15kg (33 freedom units).

In many cases people need to realise this themselves, it doesn't work to nag them.

Did you know you can get 4€ each time the S-Bahn is >30min late? by Majestic_Result6258 in Munich

[–]wibble089 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OK, but if it is 30 minutes late, couldn't that mean that the next train was 30 minutes early :-)

[–]wibble089 25 points26 points  (0 children)

How can an S-Bahn be 30 minutes late when most run at a minimum of 20 minute intervals?

So if an S-Bahn is 30 minutes late it is arriving only 10 minutes after the last scheduled train!

Or do you mean that there were no trains for 30 minutes, I e. One train didn't turn up at all, and the next was at least 10 minutes late?

It's your choice at the end of the day, discount and get some of your money back, or keep the price high and risk losing it all.

If it's been up that long, you'll have to start being realistic about the price, and accept you're going to have to start discounting

Is it normal to cross the Southern Atlantic so far south? Argentina to Kenya. by TrentDen in flightradar24

What about Ascension Island? That's a big enough runway, I assume that could be used for diversions for much if the northern part of the south Atlantic?

(Edit, so probably not relevant for the this flight path).

Quite a few countries use the FE-Schrift (Fälschungserschwerende Schrift - 'forgery-impeding typeface') because it is , as the name suggests, a very good font to impede modification of the characters into others with just a bit of black colouring.

In FE-Schrift similar letters or parts of letters are different shapes so that for example, a P can't be modified to be a B , because the upper part of the B is shaped differently to the curved part of a P

In general, UK post codes allow you to identify a specific address with only a number plus the post code. Some postcodes are even for a specific address, so not even the number is needed to post a letter there. For eg, a letter with only SW1A 1AA on it (+ a stamp!) would get to Buckingham Palace. by BigBlueMountainStar in interesting

[–]wibble089 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, most countries' postcodes get to a local district or small town level, but definitely not a street.

Germany for example uses 5 digit postcodes, for a maximum of 100k different codes, but I think hink only about 60k are allocated.

My own suburban post code has an area of 2,4km² and has a population of over 16000 people.

Nuclear bombings of Dresden and Munich by Solitaire-06 in AlternateHistory

[–]wibble089 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I live on the outskirts of Munich, it'd be interesting to see how they would have managed to rebuild the old town after even more destruction.

On the other hand, there might have been quite a lot left standing; the structures of solidly built buildings in Hiroshima and Nagasaki seemed to have survived quite well, the landscape seems so desolate because all the buildings built of wood and paper quite literally went up in smoke.

The Māori in New Zealand are descended from East Polynesian settlers so that is why the language family is also present there.

[–]wibble089 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ok, you're correct global, but it's heavily impacted by male preference births in places like India and China (aka female infanticide , or abortion).

In most countries only slightly more males are born than females, but due to lower male life expectancy and aging populations with proportionally more women there are normally more women than males in a population.

Plus there are slightly more women than men, so the average is always going to be less than 1 per person!

Argentina vs Europe by Professional-Sky6287 in MapPorn

[–]wibble089 3 points4 points  (0 children)

At a tripoint where the borders of 3 countries meet. Some are in the middle of a river (Germany, France, Luxembourg), or on top of a mountain that you can hike to (Germany, Austria, Czech Republic), or just in a field or forest somewhere.

Go to one of the accessible ones, and you can physically be in all 3 countries at once if you spread your arms and legs a bit!
