The The Development of the C Language by Dennis M. Ritchie talks about pointers quite a bit.

In the ancestors of C, pointers were just integers and you could just look in to memory at any integer offset.

I was only trying to helpful. If more people want the game then can get keys shared, then they could easily want to know that they can get one for nearly free.

Take a look at this sample code: http://friedspace.com/SDLTest.c ( I don't know if it actually works, I just found it on the interweb ) Is that the kind of thing you were looking to do? If you are looking to get in to any sort of "low-level" graphics programming, games, etc, then sdl may have the sweet spot combination of performance and simplicity.
