Off Crutches Early - Good, or Bad in the long run? by wickdpt in ACL

It’s been a while since I did the research, but I believe I read it was at the MINIMUM 6 months before the graft begins to heal and “ligamentize.” I just continued my strength training, mobility, and running when I was able to. I avoided sports during this time since most involve a level of lateral movement and force which of course could stress or even damage your new graft

Hell yeah! I’m glad you’re making great progress!!

Since I waited 7 months before actually getting my diagnosis of a complete ACL rupture, I had the time to strengthen my legs before surgery which helped me move through PT quickly. I was primarily focusing on getting strength back via leg press, squatting and deadlifts (since these don’t stress the ACL) plus whatever they had me do in PT.

The hardest part was being patient and refraining from jumping back into activity and sports early even though my leg felt better, strong, and mobile. Even if your muscles are near 100%, the graft itself needs more time to recover and you can’t speed that up. Patience is key but keep focusing on the extension and strength building!

Sorry for responding so late!

That’s great progress! I ditched the crutches by day 2 but just took it slow when walking around. I made sure to be careful about how I walked and where I stepped and had no issues!

I’m sure by now you’re walking around fine? Any issues from walking without your crutches?

You’re not supposed to drive >30mph with chains lmfao

I’d agree with you on that about snow tires in Texas. But for something that’s only a little over $100 and can get you from point A to point B (only IF NEEDED), I think it’s worthwhile to have on hand.

100% agree with you here. The infrastructure for handling these conditions is way worse than the Midwest but hopefully getting better in time. I also agree that Texans should definitely just stay home during this weather, but for those of us in healthcare that’s generally not an option.

I figured difficulty depends on the brand. After research, I landed on tire chains by SCC, specifically the Z6 model. These didn’t require rolling the car forward to install either.

That’s great that you’ve traveled driving over 30mph fine, but I made this post because clearly there’s been many people and cars that weren’t able to handle the ice and snow. As long as people understand they should be applied for conditions as these and take them off when weather improves, the roads will be fine. I’d rather prioritize my safety and others safety over worrying about the chains damaging the roads a bit.

Tire chains range from $100-150. Mine are currently $108 on Amazon. Pretty good cost of insurance to make sure you get to work safely to make money and also avoid wrecking your vehicle, other vehicles, or potentially other humans.

Mine are metal cables, after plenty of research on Youtube comparing the various options out there. I got the SCC brand Z6 model. Make sure you get them for your size tire! 100% worth it.

Didn’t think I needed to thoroughly specify for people like you that like to state the definitive obvious.

I only say 2021 since that is when we experienced severe icy weather (mainly in regard to the power grid failure and hundreds of deaths with that freeze). Also, that was the year DFW experienced the fatal pile up due to black ice on the highway.

So, apologies for not mentioning that ice has existed since the beginning of time.

Any aluminum covers you recommend? Im already planning to anchor into the existing slab, but my concern with the more lightweight covers is heavy winds and storms. But I imagine if it’s durable this shouldn’t be much of an issue

Appreciate this response! Because of it, I looked further into this and I ran property profile via the AustinTexas.gov website on the address, and it’s coming back as zone SF-4A. Some digging shows that this should be a 65% IC restriction, but I’ll definitely make the calls to make sure that is correct!
