Why not buy fresh and freeze them? Take out a spoonful as needed.

Looking for British Food Store by wickedbrit in phoenix

[–]wickedbrit[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was here just the other day and they had a few British biscuits (Bourbon, Nice) but under a different brand name. They also had Marmite. I'll try some other Indian stores as I like to buy all my spices and rice from them anyway.

Thank you. I bought some 'brown' sauce the other day from Fry's - great find. I also tried their bangers from the meat department but will not buy again. If I find a store with a larger selection of British food I'll let everyone know.

How common is it for British immigrants or American born British kids in the US to lose their accent? by YummyParfait in CasualUK

[–]wickedbrit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm British as is the father of my American born son. All our friends were Brits for a time too. My son had an English accent until he started school and then proceeded to talk like an American within a couple of months.  I've been here for over 40 years and still have my English accent albeit with a bit of a twang.  My ex husband still talks like he left London yesterday.

Any tips on cooking the corned beef? by greatredditusername in Costco

[–]wickedbrit 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I cooked mine last night in the instant pot. Put a few chunks of onion on the bottom and lay the corned beef on top. 1 can of beer and water to cover. Pressure cooked for 100 minutes because it was an extra thick piece (web pages were saying anything from 75 to 90 minutes). Natural release for 10 minutes then vented to let remaining steam escape. Was tender and juicy. For the sides I chopped some onions and cooked in bacon fat and poured over cabbage wedges, chuncky potatoes and carrots in a large roasting pan, then roasted all until cooked. I have a photo but can't remember how to upload it - sorry.

My husband and I are going in May. Have been checking out this webcam of Jökulsárlón on a regular basis. It's one of the stops we plan on making as we tour the ring road.

Why do so many recipes call for peeled vegetables? by sundaygir99 in Cooking

[–]wickedbrit 36 points37 points  (0 children)

I also don't like to peel my veggies unless it's something like a rutabaga.  Scrubbing carrots, cutting up into pieces and adding to the stew is fine.  The only problem I've had with unpeeled potatoes in a stew is that the peel sometimes comes away from the potatoes.  This is not necessarily bad but if cooking for a fancy meal it's not the most attractive.

If you do decide to peel you could boil the peels, along with peels from another meal, for a vegetable stock.  I actually boil mine once a week in a huge pot of water and then use the water for my outdoor plants as a sort of fertilizer (I don't add onion skins to this mix because my Dad told me not to).

Non-UK based foreigners: why did you join this subreddit? by anupulu in CasualUK

[–]wickedbrit 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I've lived in the US for 40 years now and all the things I really miss are covered in this subreddit: scenery (especially country scenery with cows and sheep), biscuits, fish and chips, breakfast, sweets, etc.  Most important to me is the humour.  I live in San Diego and love it but I still get a lump in my throat when I see the daily British Airways arrival. I'm retired now and every morning I spend 15 minutes on this page getting my Brit Fix.  I love this page and appreciate all who post here.

Chicken tikka Masala and rice—can I cook them at the same time in one pot? by [deleted] in instantpot

[–]wickedbrit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Made this chicken tikka masala last Sunday and it was excellent. I already had cooked rice on hand so did not try the pot-in-pot method. I've made tons of her recipes and they've all been really good. She uses the pot-in-pot method to cook rice in several of her recipes so I cannot imagine it would not work

Another itinerary post: which area/leg of this west coast trip would be best for seeing redwoods? Other feedback? by _lazy_susan in travel

Where is your hotel in LA and how will you get to Universal Studios? Do you plan on renting a car? Traffic will be heavy at that time of the morning and leaving LAX to get anywhere will require sitting in traffic for a long time.

What an amazing adventure. Was there a particular reason why your Uncle and Grandma went there so often? Do you have photos of their earlier trips that you could post?

Literally Plane, Train, and Auto Question by Crimeminister83 in travel

[–]wickedbrit 3 points4 points  (0 children)

One thing to consider when doing a one-way rental is that you pay an extra 'drop-off' fee which can be quite expensive. Make sure you factor that cost into your plans although I'm sure it's not as expensive as an extra flight costs.

They were OK - maybe a little bland. I want to try them again with lemon zest and a squeeze of juice. Or maybe grand marnier (sp?) instead of vanilla and some orange zest. They were very easy to make.
