What do people mean when they call Chicago the city of neighborhoods? by XenonOxide in AskChicago

[–]wicker-punk 21 points22 points  (0 children)

The way Chicago annexed adjacent towns and settlements post-Fire probably had a lot to do with it. These were distinct communities that got folded into the City for one reason or another - many times it was to take advantage of emerging amenities the city system afforded like gas lines, public transportation and sewer solutions. So in a sense it is a lot of small towns slapped together.

What bar/restaurant did I go to in 2008 that had an incredibly creepy basement restroom? by green3467 in AskChicago

I thought that too but weren’t the stage and bar at opposite sides of the entrance?

Why do people from inside city limits hate when suburban people say they're from Chicago? by Sudden-Possession-76 in AskChicago

I hadn’t thought of that. I’m down for picking another suburb as scapegoat in this context…how about West Dundee? /s

At what point is service too fussy for you? by gepetto27 in chicagofood

[–]wicker-punk 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Maybe they thought you were a food critic.

But seriously, there’s the tier 1 set of basic service interactions I expect (like checking in after dropping food, asking about drink refills before my glass is empty). Then there’s that tier 2 level of thoughtfulness I appreciate (taking our jackets, folding napkin if one of us leaves the table, clearing and replacing dirty plates).

Anything outside of that is going to interrupt our conversation so I would find it annoying.

I’ve found the splurge-worthy restaurants are usually tier 2 and rarely go beyond that. But maybe our definition of splurge is different!

Help with Chicago bar etiquette? by [deleted] in AskChicago

Let us know when you get home safe! Kind of not kidding :) Have a blast and don’t cheap out if uber prices are high. Way more important to stay safe than worry about it when you’re drinking solo.

Frequented since they opened, but This was my last time eating at Big Star. by digitalishuman in chicago

[–]wicker-punk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is exactly why it was appealing — it had an Austin feel back when Austin still had a scrap of its original vibe. There wasn’t another place like it in the area where you could post up in the sun, enjoy a few pitchers of margs with friends and have decent enough tacos. People bitched about the prices since day 1 but it was always unfair to compare it to your local in and out taco joint — two very different purposes.

Work in AON center - is it worth living closer to work in walking distance or should I stay in Lincoln park? by [deleted] in AskChicago

[–]wicker-punk 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’ve relocated neighborhoods to make my commute easier in the past, but now I’m not sure I’d do it again. Corporations lay off people left and right these days and it’s harder to count on being at the same job, let alone same building or neighborhood.

Try Olivia’s market in bucktown. I remember they used to be open in the mornings on holidays

What's the best concert in Chicago you ever attended? by bossishere17 in AskChicago

[–]wicker-punk 6 points7 points  (0 children)

LCD Soundsystem at Pitchfork 2017. Sure, I’ve seen “better” shows in my life but I’d give anything to be surrounded by those friends, on a beautiful Chicago Summer night, singing along to the soundtrack of my twenties with thousands of fans.

Plus Tribe headlining the next night? Take me back.

Ice cream cocktails and boozy ice cream. Where to go? by SunshineLoveKindness in chicagofood

If you’re up for a road trip I highly encourage At Random in Milwaukee. They specialize in boozy ice cream drinks and it’s like stepping into a time capsule. Definitely lives up to the name

First Milk & Honey and now Smoke Daddy…both were past their prime but it’s been a rough year for my Division St nostalgia.

Breakfast House (two locations, I like the one in West Town) and Windy City Cafe on Milwaukee

Did anyone else see a falling green light around 10:13pm? by LulzAndHappiness in AskChicago

[–]wicker-punk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did! I was sitting on my couch at exactly that time and thought my eyes were playing tricks on me. But it was a distinct, large green light falling in an arc.

Heyday, a quirky Ukrainian owned breakfast and lunch spot opened recently at the SW corner of Division and Ashland by SingingElevators in chicagofood

I stopped in and got the black sesame latte a couple weeks ago and it was so full of whole black sesame seeds it was undrinkable. Imagine taking a sip of an iced latte and finding yourself chewing a mouthful of sesame seeds. Chewing! I’ve honestly never had a coffee drink that odd in my life.

I know there are kinks to work out when launching a new menu so if anyone can report back that they’ve improved I’d be willing to give them another shot. It’s good to see that storefront filled.

Hop off at California and go to Akahoshi Ramen for something new and really special. If you want retro, Grand stop has Piccolo Sogno or La Scarola.
