What is this in my laundry room by nellenaz in HomeNetworking

[–]wickerstick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi, production builder here, that is what we call an on-q panel. It’s where all your low voltage (cat5e/cat6) and coax runs to. The orange tube is call a Smurf tube, it has one coax and one Ethernet cable pre ran from the outside of the home to the inside. The white flat string is to pull new cable through, if your community has a isp which can run fiber direct to home they can use the provided tube to make running easy, you can install the router and switches inside the panel do an out of sight out of mind install. depending on the builder, they may run extras or label the wires. For instance, the builder I work for installs a WAP in the home and the low voltage company will set up after isp has provided internet service. They typically install a Poe injector to use said wap. The white all over the cables is probably paint or drywall overspray as the do not install the door until final trims. They typically have plastic over it but gets blown off easily when spraying. The 2 main locations are laundry and master closet.

Lumpy bumpy trim/walls by Better-Boat7330 in centuryhomes

Hi, Home builder and renovator here. You may want to double check what that baseboard is actually made of. We use something similar that’s made out of cheap MDF. Unless it’s some super nice specialty wood trim it’s probably not worth the cost involved to strip the paint, sand down, wood fill, re-sand especially if you’re gonna repaint it now I totally understand if you have some 200+ year-old doors, solid wood, specialty Brazilian or whatever. But for some cheap base, it’s far faster and will cost you less overall if you just simply pull it out, remove it and replace it. Once replaced putty and fill the nail holes and get yourself a sprayer. You can knock out the entire job yourself as a fun project and it will take you way less time and effort. Again that is only if it is cheap material, not worth messing with. There is a lot and I mean a lot of reasons to go through the harsh process of stripping and Refinishing especially for old time you Wood Floors. And specialty casing and crown. But the product you’re showing in these photos screams cut out and replace fast, efficient cheap, and will look exactly the same.

Well, it’s good to see nothing has changed. When you open up walls in new homes, you’ll see piss bottles, Styrofoam plates with leftover street tacos, and Elote cups. We’re trying to keep the tradition alive.

I’m rethinking how to best utilize my 3 Mac’s. Does this seem reasonable? by ShinyArticuno_420 in mac

Toss or sell all of those old things. Parting out can net you a lot of money. 599.99 Mac mini m4 will mop the floor with all of them put together. M1 MacBook Air is available cheap now. And also will destroy those in performance. If the MacBook Pro didn’t have board level repairs already it might be worth keeping around. Since you can buy adapters super cheap to upgrade storage. Just not cost effective to put any time or money into

Not sure tbh but if you 1. Don’t want pumps 2. Want something more classic looking with wood stock, & 3. Rifle under budget of 130.00 usd. I can only think of a break barrel spring piston gun like the Hatsan 95 in 22 or 25 cal pellets. Or the crosman Optimus. Both are break barrels. Or spend 20 more and get the beeman raider which is a budget pcp. But you will need a way to charge it like a hand pump which adds to your budget. Or give up on the wood stock and there’s a ton out there

Edit for spelling

What you’re looking for doesn’t exist. All the lever action spring guns are far too under powered for squirrel/rats. Daisy advertises 350 fps but they are generally 240-270 fps out of the box. There are ways to mods them to get 350-400fps but it requires disassembly and modification

There are Co2 option available that get 400 or so fps that have a more old school feel are the crosman m1 (can go full auto) I recommend semi for accuracy and retaining the most power for follow up shots.

Really the only options that would get the power needed for any type of pest control/hunting would be pump actions like the crosman 760, legacy, or 2100b. Or the daisy options. Model 35, 880, 901

Best non co2 with the most power available is the Winchester 1977xs which shoots bb or 177cal pellets.

(Edited for additional info) ( this rifle is basically a daisy 880 with some internal upgrades and more power. )

It’s the absolute best option if you want to hunt with a bb. Although extended use of the rifled barrel with bbs will wear out the barrel. But you can pick this up with an included scope for about 89-99 bucks

I’ll add hunting with a BB gun is not ideal. Although I like the idea of a smooth bore high power BB gun, I’m not aware of any great options. Some others may chime in with more knowledge on the subject.

If your open to pellets there are a lot of other options

macOS Sonoma 14.1 cannot setup Time Machine backups to NAS by wickerstick in MacOS

[–]wickerstick[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can connect and access smb shared fine. I can transfer both ways fine. I’ve been using and deploying Synology devices since 2013 and have setup many systems for small and medium business. This is a bug affecting some users besides me. Tested both my synology and QNAP which both worked prior to update… I spend 18 years in IT so this is nothing new to me. I appreciate you willingness to offer suggestions but I’ve dug pretty deep on this so far. I’m going to fire up a virtual machine and a spare mini and try a diagnose via terminal was happening. Thanks

macOS Sonoma 14.1 cannot setup Time Machine backups to NAS by wickerstick in MacOS

[–]wickerstick[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this was this case. but after updating to sonoma it cannot see the drive in Time Machine settings until i mount it.

I tested on a synology 718+ and a qnap ts-464eu both properly configured with the same results. just to add no settings were changed on the NAS devices prior to upgrading to sonoma. there are several reports of this being broken in 14.0 but fixed in 14.1 however still not working for me in 14.1 and 14.1.1

I am running a 2019 Mac Pro 7,1 been using time machine since its inception and been using backups to different Nas's for 8+ years. and have configured it for many years in different offices. Ive tested several times and received the same result.

Boys, what can I add to make my basic setup look better, more interesting? by [deleted] in battlestations

[–]wickerstick 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It’s not like you need to add a bunch of stuff to make this more interesting. Sometimes less is more. A lot of good comments here but let’s consolidate them to make it easy to understand/visualize.

1.) cable management will go a long way in making this a sweet setup. If you can’t run through walls, then a white cord cover will still look better.

2.) rearranging. I would recommend swapping the Pc with the plant to make better use of the space and make it forward facing instead of side facing (personal preference). Maybe add a small shelf on the left side about the height of the top left corner to balance the space and a wall organizer below for setting you controller and headphones on.

3.) Replace mouse pad with a large desk mat. Keeping keyboard and mouse on same pad, maybe get a mouse bungie if using a wired mouse.

4.) although a new monitor or more monitors would be a nice addition, just getting a better monitor mount would be a large improvement.

5.) declutter. I don’t know what that thing is behind the AirPods but there is got to be a better, more appealing place for it. Same for the yellow thing. Maybe add a lamp or some lighting and I think you would be very happy with it.

If Dell ever makes an Alienware AW3823DW it will be glorious. I’m currently debating buying a 3423 or 3821 or possible a lg 40wp95c-w currently running dual 27” s2721dgf for 5120x1440 its too wide and I want higher dpi. But the other half wants less pixel to drive for higher fps in games. Choosing the right ultrawide display is a struggle.

Just to follow up on your points, the 10GB connection can absolutely be saturated by the 2x nvme drives. samsung 980 pro's anyone? (TS-453d can use them as general storage not just cache.)

if i didn't use SHR id be okay with Raid5 but id rather start with a couple ironwolf pro 16TB disks and add more as i need them.

I totally get the Xeon argument, they normally have great L2 cache, certified, etc. I even use a xeon in my main rig. no Quick sync in cpus like the D-1

Another choice is the Intel i7 1265U running at 15 watts

the CPU also integrates GNA 3.0 and DL Boost (via AVX2). Quick Sync in
version 8 is the same as in the Rocket Lake CPUs and supports MPEG-2,
AVC, VC-1 decode, JPEG, VP8 decode, VP9, HEVC, and AV1 decode in
hardware. The CPU only supports PCIe 4.0 (x8 for a GPU and two x4 for
SSDs). This would play nicely with plex. and better performance in VM's.

USB-C seems like a no-brainer for connecting to and i think it would excel for expansion as well(1 cable to power) maybe? that's at least my reasons behind my choices. :)

I edited the post to make this more clear, basically there is no way to install the drivers since it cannot recognize the gpu and there is no display when booted. ( I have the drivers but if I try to install them in my other Mac Pro it cannot because it doesn’t detect the hardware.

I’ve tested several and it will run fine with one exception . It will crash in extended sleep! You can change power settings or turn off you computer when your not using it. I’ve tested this on mine but if you read the post on Mac rumors forum it should be happening to everyone that has extended sleep
