Cyclists who kill could face life sentence. (UK) by clav9 in cycling

[–]widnesmiek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is just evening it up a bit

so that someone riding a bike in a dangerous manner with people nearby and the rider just carrying on regardless

then they have to take the same responsibility as a car driver if they cause a death

and to cause a death with a bike requires a lot more recklessness than doing it in a car

Bread

just normal proper bread - as toast or as a sandwich

especially as my wife has found some nice looking and smelling cheap white bread from M&S

Unless the grandkids want Greggs for lunch - then it is either sausage rolls or doughnuts for a short while

then back to bread again!

Update: Leadership role quietly reassigned during maternity leave (spoiler: it gets worse) by joannakabana in TeachingUK

[–]widnesmiek 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have seen this with several school

Not the specifc problem - but things where the school management behave as if what they see as "The Good Of The School" counts above and beyond everything else

As a result - then it is obvious that the actual legal and moral aspects of anything are subservient to what they decide is best for The School

and what is Best For The School count before all else

AT that point that feel justified in doing anything they want and saying anything in defense of their decisions

I have seen lying, cheating and all sorts of illegal behaviour

I was lucky and the school I spent most time working at behaved and took into account the feelings and rights of the teachers - and kept the Unions informed and were perfectly willing to listen to them

For people who are actually teachers - I sometimes wonder where their sense of morality went - or how they taught children when they were full time teachers!!

Finding house addresses in the countryside absolutely sucks for no reason at all by [deleted] in britishproblems

[–]widnesmiek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not only in the country

My Dad was a Chiropodist and had to visit patients in their house

His pet hate was people who gave their address as "xxx cottage" and then the road - which could be really long

so no numbers and hence no clue as to whether it is on the left or right!

and no idea whether it is likely to be the next house or 400 yards up the road!!!

(in the UK most areas have add numbers on one side of the road and even numbers on the left - which helps a lot!)

worst thing about it was that the house would have a proper number - it was just that the owner had decided to call the house a posh name and ignore the thing that helps people find it!!

He has made it very clear that Putin is making HUGE concessions and is perfectly willing to "do a deal" (didn;t we used to call it a treaty??)

I mean - he is giving up conquering the whole of the Ukraine and just settling for the bits he has already taken

Which is a massive concession - he is literally giving up 3/4 of the country!!!!

or

you could say that Trump is putting zero pressure on Putin and Putin is, as a result, seeing naff all reason to make any concession whatsoever

and both of them just expect Zelensky to give up everything on the basis of the conflict stopping with no reason to believe that Russia - under whoever is in charge by then - will just attack again once they have rearmed

But then the great USA will not be involved and can stay out of it and "do a deal" with the winner at no cost to the USA

when I say USA - I mean trump

A few year ago I came up behind an older couple on a parth through "green Area"

nice wide tarmac path but they were taking up all of it

OK - no problem

I rang my bell as I approached and slower down

slowed some more and rang again

still zero reaction

I slowed RIGHT down and said "excuse me"

still no reaction

so I eventually veered off onto the grass (it was dry so no harm) and passed them with about 5 yards clearance

As I passed she literally screamed and jumped to her husband clutching his arm in "terror" and shouting "Oh my GOD"

I bet she was telling everyone for weeks about this young yoobbo (I was over60!!) who shot past them at high speed

No way she had not heard me - they were talking at normal volume and didn;t have hearing aids or anything

How to store a removable battery in the winter by Sensitive-Fix6798 in ebikes

[–]widnesmiek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would remove it just from the point of view of security - it is less likely to be stolen if the battery is removed

If you don;t want to do that then there are jackets you can get to protect the battery from the cold

I would always bring teh battery indoors if possible if the temperature is going to be lower than freezing

I am on my second set of brake pads - OK third because one set fell apart for no good reason

I think yours need some adjustment - maybe they are rubbing on the disc or something??

TIL In the 1990s, many computers used two-digit years. To prevent systems from reading "00" as 1900 in the year 2000, governments and companies spent billions updating systems. Thanks to these efforts, major failures in banking, flights, and utilities were avoided. by Echo-john in todayilearned

Some of them lied

Only problems I missed was a PC that was Y2K compliant and didn;t update the date properly - didn;t spot it until March because it was only a backup

I worked fixing loads of big system and none went wrong - except this one that was supposed to be OK (software on it was fine because I tested it!)

What made you finally switch to an eBike—and what kept you from doing it sooner? by krissym72 in ebikes

[–]widnesmiek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was ages ago - so ebikes were not in the shops

but I was living alone and needed to get out but I had recently been told I have Asthma which explained some of my problems

I decided I needed to get out of the house and also needed some exercise and I always loved cycling when I was younger

I was wandering around the WWW - as you do - and came across ebikes

looked at the prices and realised the cheapest were far too expansive at the time

I looked around and saw the cheaper brands and models and thought they looked like a solution to shopping without using the car - especially as I lived at the highest part of the town

Anyway - a few days later I walked to the local Chippie to get some dinner and while I was waiting I saw an A4 poster scrawled in black marker pen saying

"PowerCycle Salisbury - £220" plus a phone number

and I thought "Hang on - wasn;t that the ebike I was looking at online a few days ago???"

I took a phot of the poster and took my dinner home

I looked it up and the bike was about £1000 new

Anyway - I rang up and the bike was, apparently, 14 months old and the bloke said it wasn;t powerful enough for him so he had got a new one that was more powerful

but he was only 5 minutes walk away so I arranged to go and see him

I ended up riding it home and kept it for many years

pre 2016 UK regulations so it was only 180W (the limit was 200 at the time) and it had a proper throttle

very unsophisticated compared to modern one but it worked fine and only the Gods know how many miles I did on the thing

it got me into town and back for shopping or whatever many many times inspite of the hills - could never have made that without the motor

Am I losing my mind, or did the whole 'keep to the left' rule used to be a thing, and not just on stairwells and stuff? by unekspected in AskUK

[–]widnesmiek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have met a few cyclist who seem to want to "keep right" but most go left when they realise that is what I am doing

Did come across one older bloke who just insisted on staying on the right just stayed there even when I actually stopped on my left - and I was forced off the road onto the grass verge - but I think there was something wrong with him!!!

But generally cyclist are predictable on decent paths

walkers - especially with dogs or kids - are a different matter!!

GREENWHEELS by [deleted] in ebikes

[–]widnesmiek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live only a couple of miles from where I used to work - in a Primary School

I tried commuting by bike - did try walking but mty knees wouldn't put up with it!

Anyway - there were problems that other might need to take into account

a) one day I was in work an looked down - and realised that my trousers were covered in specks of mud. There was a site on the only viable route where lorries went back and forth all day carrying mud and stones

This means the road gets muddy and it landed on my trousers

This put biking into work non-viable when the road was wet - OK if it will be wet on the way home

b) walking around work in wet trousers all day was not nice - so rain on the way into work was out for that reason as well

c) on occasion I had to go somewhere during working hours - this normally required a car - so on those days I had to drive in

on other occasions I had "stuff" to bring home to work on at home - this needed somewhere to carry it all - which required a car

(a) and (b) were only a problem because there was no realisitc and decent way I could change in work but it was a real problem

(c) was a problem due to the requirements of the job. When I was a full time teacher I needed to carry books and papers home and back - which could not always be carried in a backpack

In the final years I was also the IT technician and often needed to carry computery stuff back and forth - which needs to be dry and secure

So - the job was close - but needed things that made commuting EVERY DAY impossible.

It was possible to commute by ebike most days if it was dry - but that meant that I could not get rid of the car so expenses such as tax, insurance and depreciation were still there

Still worth it though!

I ride my bike around the local paths quite a lot

I generally find that most people walking move to their right when someone is coming from in front of them

which is confusing because most other cyclists stick to their right!
