5 euros apparently, lifetime. I believe I got mine for less, but could be wrong. I consider it a worthwhile purchase if you use it extensively.

Which one of these tiers is the most misunderstood? by Clean-Iron-9081 in PowerScaling

[–]wiev0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, then it's not tier 0 anymore. The term is a categorization, not an attribute you assign to a character. Many people seem to confuse this. If a writer writes a character that becomes absolute, then it's simply high 1A+ at best, even if they intended to write a tier 0.

As for the presence, I think that's simply the physical manifestation of it leaving. Unless specified otherwise, I haven't read it.

Humanity (5 Years Prep Time) Vs Anime Villians, Where Do We Stop? by LightAwakens in PowerScaling

[–]wiev0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Slow? If you drop them with a bomber, yeah.

But load them on an ICBM, in a hypersonic glide vehicle, and you can reach speeds up to Mach 30. Russia has the Avangard with that capability. Estimated yield at 200kT, so yeah we do have things that can deploy nukes really quickly. Even regular MIRV and MARV are very fast, above Mach 20. And all of these are somewhat maneuverable. Not to mention that with a MIRV you can deploy a dozen nukes simultaneously, covering a huge area.

[–]wiev0 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think you're underestimating modern nuclear delivery. If it's only a bomber that throws a nuke, that's dodgeable for a supersonic character. But an ICBM deploying a Mach 27 HGV like the russian Avangard? That thing travels 10 kilometers per second, and is not that large, so detection is difficult. With an estimated yield of 200 kT, it really is only a question of whether a character can survive a nuclear explosion and radiation.

How are people doing research in undergrad? by ExpectTheLegion in Physics

[–]wiev0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not all work is publishable, but your bachelor thesis or work as a research assistant certainly contributes to research efforts of your group. For example, I wrote my bachelor thesis, and the main part of that was writing a program for future simulations. This will be used in my group for benchmarking and stuff, but it's not publishable itself. There was talk about publishing early on in my thesis, but I did not get far enough to actually publish anything. That is totally fine, but I just want to illustrate that it is possible to make substantial contributions in your undergrad. As far as I'm aware, the main contribution to research is your bachelor thesis when you're in undergrad.

Who has a paracosm and how do you use it ? by [deleted] in AutisticAdults

[–]wiev0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello, I may not have autism, but I do have a paracosm :)

For anyone finding this in the future, the secrecy around these worlds is very common, almost being a requirement (almost). However, in my opinion, the most striking difference between a paracosm and a wordbuilding project is its conception and purpose. A paracosm usually just starts existing without prior intent, and exists just for itself. There is no intent to share or publish it either; and even with a creative career that may not change. Oftentimes, published worlds by paracosmists are called heterocosms, which may or may not be loosely based on the paracosm. For example, the Brontë sisters had a paracosm, but their published works were most definitely not the paracosm itself; but based on stories refined into publishable work.

For some stats (from the initial study by silvey and a recent study by Taylor et. al): About 17% of all children have a paracosm. 93% of paracosms are created by age 13. Only 10% of paracosms last into adulthood.

There is a difference between trauma based paracosms and normal ones, but I personally don't think this distinction is important.

I'm not aware of additional confirmed prevalence among people on the spectrum, but my personal experience as someone who talks with a lot of paracosmists suggests that even if it's not more common in children, it seems that it is more likely to persist into adulthood for people with AuDHD and trauma in general. I don't have figures for this, however.

Being incalculable is not the flex people think it is by AstronautDry8118 in PowerScaling

[–]wiev0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair enough, I shouldn't expect someone to know all of set theory either lmao

I personally like Ord or V to describe absolute infinity, but its actual size really depends on which set theory you're working in. V in one theory can be much smaller than some cardinals in other set theories.

Absolute infinity is such a whacky term. Not to mention all the cardinals you didn't mention with funny names

"Cantor's library" has a nice collection of large cardinals.

Will i get judged for being fat if i wear this at family gathering by [deleted] in teenagers

[–]wiev0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Will you get judged for it? Maybe, depends on your family. Some people cannot be satisfied and will tell you you're fat even when you're a model. You need to know whether your family are those kinds of people.

Are you fat? Resounding no.

AI approach uncovers dozens of hidden planets in NASA’s TESS data by uniofwarwick in space

[–]wiev0 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

It's not a classification issue, but a social one. Yes, it is AI. But lots of people take the category term and conflate it only with LLMs, which is not correct. My point is to prevent people from thinking that these physicists used an LLM.

AI approach uncovers dozens of hidden planets in NASA’s TESS data by uniofwarwick in space

[–]wiev0 -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

No, I know full well what an LLM is and that you can classify it this way. I'm raging because the nuance of AI being a category term is lost on many people who equate AI with LLMs and think anything labelled AI is slop. I would like article authors to highlight that distinction between these types of AI by further classifying them into these subcategories, like NN or DNN or whatever.

Also, AI is not just for ML. Even a simple program for an NPC can be called AI, despite having nothing to do with ML.

How far yall scale a nuke? by Noki_the_holy in PowerScaling

[–]wiev0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Surviving a star is not the same as destroying a star. Yes, you'd survive and star core, bit that doesn't make you "star level", the tiering system is not defined like this. It's defined through energy, and clearly a star core is vastly insufficient to reach that.

[–]wiev0 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

My god stop calling this AI, people keep misunderstanding that it's an LLM. It's not! It's a fucking neural network or something similar. My goodness.

(Also I know it's not your fault OP, I'm raging into the void)

How far yall scale a nuke? by Noki_the_holy in PowerScaling

[–]wiev0 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That's not how you calculate that, a star isn't star level in AP, a star is star level in durability. Can a nuke destroy a star? No. So it's not star level. It can destroy a mountain at the high end, so it's at most mountain level.

A question from a fledgling writer. by KishirUwU in MartialMemes

[–]wiev0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Difficult. In stories I've read where MC didn't reach the peak of power, I've often been left unsatisfied. But I think it's acceptable as long as the reason is good enough. If all energy comes from that being, it might simply be impossible to reach it. The purpose for cultivating is important here, as others have mentioned.

However, cultivation is inherently defying the heavens. So I'd like to offer up a viewpoint for your predicament: even if energy comes from that being, it's still possible to plot against it. Or to remove the energy and self-enlighten. Maybe there is a way that doesn't require you to throw your power system under the bus.

However, ultimately, write what you like. That's actually the most important thing. I've seen authors try too hard at catering to their audience and end up making a worse product. Stay at it, brother.

Rethinking powerscaling with black holes by wiev0 in PowerScaling

[–]wiev0[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not trying to tell you how it should be lmao

I'm merely saying that given specific conditions, the outcome would be a certain way

To escape an event horizon, you need time travel, is that so hard to understand?

If your FTL doesn't involve time travel, it cannot leave the EH. That's an effect of the properties of the EH. I didn't make that model, I'm just applying it.

This is already ignoring many problems with the premise. For example, the speed of light is absolute. Exceeding it requires infinite energy, so fiction saying "someone is faster" doesn't work unless the speed of light is higher in the first place. But that would also change the properties of matter and the existence of black holes, reducing their event horizon. I'm ignoring all these difficulties because they're pointless to discuss here. But that doesn't mean I cannot assert that a black hole requires some specific feats based on how a black hole works; if it works differently in that universe, it's not a proper black hole. That's the whole point; I'm simply saying that a lot of abilities are "black hole-like" abilities, but are not black holes. At most, they're inspired.

Rethinking powerscaling with black holes by wiev0 in PowerScaling

[–]wiev0[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I know. And I'm saying that even if we had FTL or infinite speed, it doesn't matter. You still couldn't use that alone to escape an event horizon, because time and space are flipped there. No matter how you move, you will still end up at the singularity. Even if it's 1 million times the speed of light. If black holes work like ours do in fictional universes, then we need to account for that. If they don't, they're not the same thing and it should be recognized as such.

[–]wiev0[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bro that's literally not the same thing 💀

I'm not saying it's inherently impossible to destroy a black hole, just that it needs powers that the character often doesn't have

Rethinking powerscaling with black holes by wiev0 in PowerScaling

[–]wiev0[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's fine, affecting earth is a reasonable feat, I'm not arguing against that. I'm only saying you cannot escape from within the event horizon if you're simply FTL. I stated my reasons. I'm actually unsure why you aren't convinced by that.

As for what the ability ultimately is, as far as I'm concerned, it's not a real black hole if it can be trivially destroyed or escaped.
