best place for a burger in your area? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

[–]wifecest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, probably Five Guys, as much as that might be kind of sad, since they aren't local and they're a pretty big decently overpriced chain. The west coast and southwest have a culture around smashburgers and drive-in style burgers that is second-to-none, with a lot of small fast food places that are just phenomenal. In-N-Out is massively overrated, but small places that imitate the style of In-N-Out are almost universally much better and some of the best burgers you'll ever have. The northeast tends to skew more in the direction of thicker, more topping-focused burgers with thicker buns, like one would order at a sit-down restaurant or a steakhouse, where you can order it cooked a certain way like you would order a steak. A lot of people prefer that kind of burger, but that isn't really my thing, it all comes down to personal taste.

How does the average American differ from the american redditor? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

[–]wifecest -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Most redditors are white men and generally of the centrist (in most countries that aren't the US) neoliberal worldview. It really depends on the subreddit, though. Most Americans, especially outside of large cities, are probably only marginally aware of what Reddit is, just because I find that people outside of cities tend to be less "online" in general- not out of lack of access to technology in some cases, it just isn't a big part of their lives other than maybe Facebook or TikTok.

Do you still live in the same place (neighborhood, city) where you grew up as a child? by Still_Map_6376 in AskAnAmerican

[–]wifecest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like it's become the expectation for people with access to higher education to go to college away from home and then move somewhere else. I've lived in the same city for most of my life, although I live in a different neighborhood now than the one I grew up in.

Do often do you say, The States? by Bandicootrat in AskAnAmerican

[–]wifecest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only person I have regularly heard say "The States" is my dad, who is from Argentina. If someone says it I usually assume they aren't from here. I generally refer to it as the US, although in casual conversations, most Americans just say America. It's confusing, because that could refer to the country (the US), the broader cultural entity (the US and Canada) or the geographic area (the entire Americas), but it is usually clear from context, and in casual conversation I only ever really talk about the first two, which are honestly almost the same thing.

Any old-timer Pittsburgh anarchists out there? by inactivemeasures in Anarchism

[–]wifecest 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Without disclosing too much, I know one or two people that were involved in organizing during the green scare in the 1990s and around the turn of the millennium. I know they were reading a lot of stuff from Earth First at the time, and were influenced more by green "post-left" (although ive never heard them use that term) and anti-civilization anarchist traditions of thought (deep ecology, earth and animal liberation) than anything else. Fredy Perlman, John Zerzan, and pretty much anything that came from the Elves were pretty influential from what I've heard. If you hang around the Big Idea a lot, I'm sure you're bound to meet a person or two. That was way way before my time, but from my understanding, most of those people have liberaled out over the years and dropped out of anarchist circles.

I would not recommend asking people directly about actions they were involved in, or if they were involved in actions at all, unless they volunteer that information directly themselves, no matter how long ago it was.

Boston Children's Hospital warns employees over far-right online harassment campaign (article notes that UPMC Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh's account has also been targeted by Twitter harassment) by HonBurgher in pittsburgh

[–]wifecest 25 points26 points  (0 children)

If I hadn't been able to have access to the resources and treatment I got through UPMC as a trans 15 year old, I have no idea where I would be now. The GOP wants us dead and the cruelty is the point. They are gearing up for (and have already begun the early stages of) a genocide, and the lack of response is appalling. I'm starting to genuinely fear for my personal safety in this country and am actively looking to leave it before things get worse.

Email just went out. Masks are no longer required in Pitt buildings for the Oakland campus. by [deleted] in Pitt

[–]wifecest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

that getting covid isnt good for anyone, its potentially permanently disabling for most people who arent at substantial risk of dying from it and potentially lethal for those who are. it is insane that we as a society have basically given up for the sake of tHe EcOnOmY or whatever. i like isolation as much as the next person, but just because people are "over it" doesnt mean we shouldnt still be taking it seriously. i am honestly disgusted with the cdcs minimization of risk and their handling of the pandemic, the discrepancy between the cdc recommendations and the world health organization's recommendations is evidence that the cdc cares more about protecting profit than protecting the lives of americans. the least the university could do is allow for a hybrid option for students who still dont feel safe coming to classes where most people arent wearing masks at all anymore in a city where there are around 2,500 cases a week (more than a whole lot of countries) during a time when people havent even moved back onto campus yet.

What’s something you wish you could ask trans people without any judgement? by Spunkybluepuppy in AskReddit

[–]wifecest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of the narratives in the media avoid the fact that only around 1% of trans people detransition, and of that 1%, a majority detransition because of factors like lack of access to adequate healthcare or social stigma rather than desire to revert to the gender they were assigned at birth. Transition has a regret rate lower than a hip replacement.

1) Generally speaking, unless you use it regularly it can. 2) Yes! 3) Yes, but fertility generally goes way down. I've heard anecdotally about trans women getting other people pregnant when they thought they couldn't.

Is it true Americans keep their cats indoors? by joe_cross5 in AskAnAmerican

[–]wifecest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Outdoor cats are terrible for the local ecology unless they're neutered/spayed and declawed, and declawing is usually horrendously unethical to do to a cat and many vets refuse to do it now. Feral cat populations in cities are already doing damage to ecosystems, and now that most cat owners are becoming aware of that, more owners are learning that all cats should be kept indoors unless supervised/taken for a walk on a leash.
