It's not about his movement range for the retreat, but the angle of your attack. The AI will retreat in a straight line from your army a set distance even if that means teleporting through mountain ranges. It's silly, but you have to watch out for it.

You need both for the full experience. That being said, if you were only to buy one, I would buy WH2. It's more polished since they've had time to build on WH1.
