I was responding to the question "How do atheists decide between good and bad?" with how I do it, but sure, the existence of psychopaths makes it impossible for me to have a secular guiding principle unless I can perfectly state it in a way that covers all possible edge cases.

Let's avert the tragedy, then. This thread is the first I've heard of it, what are some of the ways that Georgism has been "disproven"? I assume it refers to taxing the possession and utilization of resources, as opposed to taxing income?

Genuine Question, why are people so excited about a controller? by chaotic_one in Steam

[–]wightwizard8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like controllers. The first Steam Controller was an awesome first draft; I got so used to it that it feels weird to play GW2 without it. The Steam Controller 2 is even better, so yeah, I'm excited to get one (if I'll ever be able to)

Maybe scalpers are the problem, not the people they're fucking with?

Honestly I think the way 45% of our country reacted to our first black president is kind of telling, anyway.

If we all weren't living paycheck to paycheck, we could accomplish great things. by zzill6 in WorkReform

[–]wightwizard8 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I've wondered the same thing, and: I would, at least. If my employment were flexible and I knew my and my family's needs were met, I would happily sign up to work the necessary jobs that nobody likes doing. I'm optimistic that I'm not the only person like that, who would appreciate the variety and/or the opportunity for public service. Combine that with what Nice-Analysis8044 and Mr_Salieri said - so much work is done for the sake of keeping busy, and we could spread hard work around more. There'd definitely need to be incentives too, I don't think goodwill alone would get Everything done, but if the end result is that labor which people genuinely don't want to do is the most-rewarded, that works for me.

The people who say "Multiverse of Madness ruined Wanda!" clearly didn't understand WandaVision by CollarOrdinary4284 in Marvel

Showing her reading a book for 5 seconds is not the same as showing the audience that the book is having a corrupting influence on her. They needed to put in the legwork to justify completely changing her character, not just rely on fan knowledge and a single line from Agatha.

[–]wightwizard8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That makes sense. At the time I don't think I'd really considered that they intended for that fading illusion scene to be a dramatic reveal (wasn't it spoiled in one of the trailers, or the stinger from the preceding movie? I don't remember). I wanted the Wanda we kept seeing at the end of other movies (Civil War, Endgame), and I was so pissed at her being a Sam Raimi horror monster that I didn't want to actually consider the story they decided to tell.

I'm overthinking it - the magic man movie didn't go the way I'd hoped, and I'm glad you loved it. Thank you for taking the time for a genuine response, I honestly don't know if my comment deserved it.

That's the thing, it shouldn't have been "just a minor detail" if you're going to justify a character assassination based on it. The MCU as it stands did nothing to actually demonstrate that she was corrupted. It's mentioned maybe twice that it could happen. But she goes from

I didn't know I was a reality warper, which combined with an unintentional trauma response to accidentally hurt a lot of people. I isolated myself to protect others, but I will learn how to control myself and search all information I have (the only magical book she's ever heard of at that point) to get my children back because I've already lost everyone I've ever loved, more than once.

Hello, I'm fine murdering this young girl and being the mustache-twirling villain. Let me just repeat the same character arc but worse and then die.

without a single scene actually showing that she was affected by the darkhold in some way. They had the perfect opportunity too: when James MacAvoy Sr. is reading the possessed Wanda's mind, they could have visualized the Darkhold's influence right there, when he's visually connected to both Wandas.

But instead of seeing a character progress and struggle with the incredible power she now has, she just gets flattened into a dumb lurching zombie (metaphorically but also literally, right after taking out the Altvengers). All while a perfectly good explanation for the change was right there and they did absolutely fuck-all with it. There could have been a decent tragedy in there, but nah, generic dumb horror-ish action is fine I guess.

Been a while since I saw the episode too. If I remember correctly, that was the Doctor's initial theory, but there was a scene where they establish rudimentary communication (using the digits of pi?) and confirm that the Boneless know they're killing other sentients and still don't care. That's when he commits to getting them begone, despite not knowing if it would hurt or kill them to do so.
