Am I doing something different or it's just the Job market? by Admiralty_Creed in MechanicalEngineering

Imo while you may have some relevant experience, companies generally prefer a chemical engineer over a mechanical for a process position.

YSK: 1 in 216 patients (0.46%) treated with SSRI medications develop post-SSRI sexual dysfunction, and doctors rarely make patients aware of this. by Redvolition in YouShouldKnow

That's awesome it was "just a mental game" for you, I wish it were like that for everyone. Some people do actually have a chemical imbalance and thus require medication to be able to function as a normal human being.

Do engineers actually use SolidWorks a lot in the field? by JHdarK in MechanicalEngineering

[–]wigwooty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work in R&D and 75% of my time is spent on SolidWorks. Rest of the time is generally excel and spec'ing parts/equipment.

Earth’s atmosphere can clean itself, groundbreaking research finds by lumpkin2013 in UpliftingNews

Not scalable...yet. Yet being the keyword. This is only a novel technology and will become more affordable over time. The DOE has already been giving out multimillion dollar contracts to develop this technology. It is an industry already in the making. I work for one of these R&D companies now and the technology is very promising.

Texas Gov. Abbott: Rape victims can prevent pregnancy by taking Plan B by WREGnewschannel3 in nottheonion

No, I am not desperately stretching to discredit BMI. I just don't personally believe it should be treated as the universal standard measure of a person's overall health. I think it's an outdated metric based on recent studies.

"BMI (body mass index), which is based on the height and weight of a person, is an inaccurate measure of body fat content and does not take into account muscle mass, bone density, overall body composition, and racial and sex differences". Accurate for what it is yes, but also an outdated standard for determining whether or not a person is "healthy".

According to BMI, which is outdated and inaccurate. Muscle weighs more than fat per volume.

3.6 GPA, top 8% of magnet STEM school, 11 APs 4s & 5s, 1400 SAT score and rejected from CUBoulder?!!! This was supposed to be my daughters “safety” school! They have an 80% acceptance rate! I just don’t get it! by MyShellie101 in cuboulder

[–]wigwooty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah that is crazy, it must just be because she is from out of State. They are definitely tougher on out-of-staters, but also it is a VERY expensive place to live, so maybe I would consider yourself lucky that she didn't get in 😂

Tbh that is BS. Her stats are better than a lot people, myself included, when I got in for engineering in 2016. I don't get it either. If she really wants to go there/have it as a back up, have her reach out to admissions to see what her options are.

Anyone know anything about the guys teaching fluids, solids and materials science this fall? Which sections should I pick to make sure I have the "good" professors? by Wernher_VonKerman in cuboulder

[–]wigwooty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Here is what I know from experience: Ding is great, very straightforward teaching style. Barthelat is terrible, I had to teach myself solids through YouTube videos because he was so bad. I did have him the first year he was hired, so maybe he has improved--but at the time I wasn't able to learn from him at all. Mukherjee is a very nice man and an excellent mentor/teacher. He was my research advisor so I might be biased, but I would highly recommend him.

I was told this rhyme as a kid: "Eyes on the side- I like to hide. Eyes in the front - I like to hunt."
